Lol, he's the one without Darkvision. Probably not a good idea.

@Ben, would you like me to investigate? I just don't want to do it because of this discussion if you're not ok with it.

Also, I feel completely useless most of the time. We're either exploring a cave and everyone rolls checks before I do, or we get into a fight that Aims' demolishes the creature before I get to move...

So I feel as if my entire purpose is to try and get the group to get to the next encounter.
I can chill back myself a little bit so you can nanny us more or go more ham. I did warn I'd be going head first into basically everything. :link But if folks want more time for them to do things, that's not me and Alu demolishing the enemy in 2 turns, I can slow down. If not, I can put blinders on too.

See, this was something I was afraid of. In the beginning, we were all rolling nonstop and most were useless and slowing us down. So, now we've sort of gone a total 180 and we're NOT rolling for anything and we're going to miss possibly important information or fun things you planned out. Knowing this moving forward is helpful because I know to check into things that stand out to me, but I feel bad because I was the one pushing to move on.
There's a balance, right? A weirder balance as we're also doing this on a forum. Look at both of Vash's games. One has been somewhat similar to ours with more movement and action, where as the other one is rp heaven where the group is visiting all the pubs in the city. Other than maybe at the main area we've been moving along fairly well imo. And also this is still our first game. No one knows what the correct answer is yet as we're doing this on a forum for the first time. It's working and we're making progress which is the main thing.

A mid thought disclaimer, none of this is a knock against you Jon. My rambling thoughts and opinions.

And also a side interjection. I read the main thread first before coming to read here about what was going on there and just walked to the back so... er.... oops? Lol.

Anyhow, what I was trying to say is, I can easily work with letting other folks do things too. Just gotta let me know. Or I can keep pushing forward too. Like, I keep feeling bad for Alu not getting to do much, but he's also said he's here more for the action than anything.

The last thing on my mind ties in with...

I don't mind wasting time on rolls and investigating dead ends, as long as it feels like we're making some sort of narrative progress -- not necessarily campaign progress.
... with saying it's also fine if we miss stuff. Even if this place is a bust, we got to witness the revenge of the mushrooms on Kelly. That should be reward enough. :link If we get loot on the side even better.

Hope things made sense. I'm still in bed and haven't had my coffee yet.

Oh, no, do your thing. It's more for myself. I don't feel useful. My guy is supposed to be combat support and an investigation fiend... and my investigative rolls have blown chunks and combat, butter fingers aside, have been pretty good. Trying to roll with things as we learn. I just am struggling with the slower pace of things if I'm not involved. It's not a you thing, or a Ben thing... It's a me thing. That's all. Perhaps I'm more like Alu and just pushing through following for combat more? I dunno. I'm working through it.

Never took it remotely that way. You're good.

I don't do regular attacks enough to actually know this, what does "versatile" mean in regards to my quarterstaff damage? It says I roll a 1d6 for damage, but then it has a smaller 1d8 under that and marks it as "versatile" (assuming because of proficiency). Does that mean I can take +2 modifier to either make it hit more easily or to make it damage more? Or is it something else?

Also I think I've been rolling Ice Knife with a +3 for hit, but D&D Beyond tells me I should actually be using a +5 modifier on that. Probably should pay more attention to that.

Versatile means you can use it 1 or 2 handed. 1 handed it does the lower damage and 2 handed the higher. So melee damage depending on how you are holding it. all depends on preference and / or what you're better at.

So, if things went differently and we managed to not kill Carl, just knock his ass unconscious, I had some ideas. Obviously blackmailing and ripping him off completely. There was going to be me and Nac preparing a stew pot over a fire as Carl wakes, as I sharpen my ax for fish stew. I also thought that Moonsprout could deceive Carl by placing a shiny light on Carl and saying that ita a death spell that would trigger in like an hour unless Carl goes off to find us some treasure he has hidden. Potentially us letting him keep some of his gold if it's good stuff. Lastly, considering the random mushrooms in the cave, maybe one of the folks could've went and found some nasty hallucinogenic or very bad for your stomach ones to feed Carl as well.

If things went well he'd get set free.

... thanks to Carlson popping up we could've also grabbed him as a hostage. That would've went well with everyone, right?

Short Order casts Frostbite on the water so father and son are trapped in ice.
