Character Creation discussion

I feel like most conversations in the tavern will be yelling "hey shortkut you should step on that trap door it won't shoot arrows in your face"
Actually, I was trying to setup my character to convince others to do that for us

“Hey Mr. Orc, I’m here from the Guinness book of world Records because I heard you are the best at “Simon Says.” Simon says stand on that suspicious floor tile

If he survives: “congratulations, I will etch your name into a tablet upon my return to headquarters

If he doesn’t: less paperwork for me

There should be some thought put in to how it's entirely possible for player characters to fight amongst each other, and even kill one another. This was supposed to be our bastion from stabbing each other in the back, but this is really just putting DC checks on whether you can stab someone in the back.

@VashTheStampede for my weapons I chose a shortsword and short bow… what would happen if someone enchanted my arrows with a love spell or dipped the tips in a love potion?

Didn't check to see what the other characters in here were, mainly because I want a surprise and think it'd be funny if we had a terrible party composition, but I'm currently working on a bard. Might multiclass into something else early on though.

But question: How have you guys been rolling up your stats on D&DB? Point Buy, Random Rolls, or Standard Array? I've always rolled dice when I made characters in the past, but I'm cool with whatever.

I did standard array because I didn't want to feel tempted to reroll if my roll sucked lol

I know it's not in our listing, I assume because it is not in the 9 base races but is Bugbear what my character would fall into? From the base races, I'm seeing Teifling as having a lot of the characteristics I'm looking for.

I basically want a human-sized wombat without being human.

Is Teifling Ranger possible?

These are probably dumb questions.

No question is a dumb question when you're new.

My first thought was firbolg because bugbears are typically inherently evil in my experience.

Unfortunately I don't currently have access to either race but...I might soon. Just trying to decide which sourcebook to go with because apparently both Volo's Guide to Monsters and the Mordenkainen book I DON'T have, have both of those as options

I just updated the available options for Races under the profile fields. I hooked Vash and I both up with Mordenkainen's, so that should mean we both have access to all of the following additional races;

Aarakocra
Aasimar
Air Genasi
Bugbear
Centaur
Changeling
Deep Gnome
Dragonborn
Duergar
Dwarf (Hill and Mountain)
Earth Genasi
Eladrin
Elf (Dark, Eladrin, High and Wood)
Fairy
Firbolg
Fire Genasi
Githyanki
Githzerai
Gnome (Forest and Rock)
Goblin
Goliath
Half-Elf
Half-Orc
Halfling (Lightfoot and Stout)
Harengon
Hobgoblin
Human
Kenku
Kobold
Lizardfolk
Minotaur
Orc
Satyr
Sea Elf
Shadar-kai
Shifter
Tabaxi
Tiefling
Tortle
Triton
Water Genasi
Yuan-ti

We both now also have Tasha's, so will both be able to allow Artificers as well as the other base classes.

(Edit: Yes, this means I caved to the allure of shiny books.)

May as well give give all the descriptions/racial traits, too:

I'm considering it but I'm seeing a lot of chaotic good.

Sell me on it a touch more

Is there one campaign or are there two campaigns where some of us baddies can go about ruining their days?

Also wouldn't it be good to have non-chaotic goods on the team too? My character will be chaotic neutral but surely a lot of fun would come from how different character types want to approach different situations, right?
Honestly you can have a party composed of any alignments. The only time you might run into problems is with people who are strictly baddies paired up with like a Paladin or something like that where they're kind of contractually obligated by forces higher than them to fight evil and shit.

But as long as there's nothing forcefully binding your character to not be able to work with other alignments, you can craft up your own justifications for making it work. Bad guy might join good guy because the ends justify the means and they want things more important than just stabbing or robbing every sap that comes by. Same might go for a good character who is willing to work with a "bad" character to accomplish something more important for the moment.
