30 Days of Games

I have never played a Resistance, nor a Killzone for that matter.

Resistance looked cool though
The first Killzone is unplayable. The framerate is abysmal. It's also ugly as sin. All the blurry browns and greys you could ever ask for. I don't know how ANYONE actually thought that would be a Halo killer. I feel like anyone who thought that never played Halo.

My honorable mentions go both Horizon games, but only because of the timing of their releases. Zero Dawn released the same week as Breath of the Wild and Forbidden West the same as Elden Ring. Both got really overshadowed because of that.

I remember this and always tell people, I got BoTW when it launched, played like 15 hours then shelved it and played HZD all the way through, I enjoyed it more.

Then FW clashed with Elden Ring.

They really picked two of the worst games to release with, seeing as they are powerhouses.

Underrated Games:

Arcade:
Bubble Bobble. Threw many quarters into that one, a number beyond reckoning.

SNES: Secret of Evermore. Beautiful game for its time, and I absolutely loved the alchemy system.

Sega Genesis: Castlevania Bloodlines.

N64: I'm with Fire Queen on Mischief Makers. It was one of a kind in its gameplay & presentation. If anyone plays it and they find themselves having trouble, just shout "Help me MARINAAAAAAA!".

PS1: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The game reminds me of Tomb Raider in a way, but with Zelda-style combat and all sorts of neat supernatural powers. This one holds a special place in my heart. Not the first game I've played by Eidos Interactive either (Akuji: The Heartless being another) ^^

*Shoutout to Bloody Roar as well*

PS2: Okami. Playstation's version of Zelda, but the thing was the game wasn't a simple clone. It's a game that's based on Japanese mythology, where you play as the Shinto Goddess of the Sun, Amaterasu, who happened to take on the form of a white wolf. The game allowed you to shape the world in your own image with the help of a tool called the celestial brush. My main gripe with the game however, is the lack of difficulty.

Gamecube: Baten Kaitos.

XBox 360: Referring to Fire Queen again, College Hoops 2K8. What can I say? I'm big into sports titles.

XBox One: Easily Quantum break for me. I feel this one gets overlooked a lot. Now, I haven't been gaming as much on the last couple of generations of consoles as I did in my younger years (a lot of this is due to me having an affinity for artifacts......err, ahem....older games), but I did thoroughly enjoy the experience this game brought.

Underrated:

Lost Kingdoms 1 & 2. I put them as needing to make a remake/reboot as well. I just loved the idea and mechanic of the games. Hell, I'd love even just a spiritual successor that has the same stuff in them.

a thing i'll add here is that last year i set out on a search to try to find the VA responsible for the "shake shake" voice clip that so many people associate with the game. my search was ultimately unsuccessful and that information has probably unfortunately been lost to time, but the person i reached out to (Christian Phillips), who was one of two people listed as "U.S. Coordination and Translation" in the credits, was able to confirm that he was the source of the prof. theo voice clips, including the iconic one referenced above!
I'm not sure that I remember much about the VO sessions, other than they were fun to direct. I wish I could remember the name of the VO Actor who did Marina's voice, other than she was very talented. What I can tell you is that the "Help meee...Maaaarrriiiiinnnnaaaaa..." and other lines for Prof. Theo, as well as the Beastector's grunty-laugh and sounds were done by me - yours truly. We were having a tough time finding someone we really liked for the role, and I had done some temp-audio as placeholder for the game. Then Hiro asked me to step into the booth when we were in Studio and try it for real. And what you hear is the outcome of my one and only "uncredited" VO project.

OMG, thank you so much for that. I've been curious about that for years!

I just watched the trailer for the remaster of this game (and the second one) and it looks really cool. It didn't launch at full price either, so I will probably pick it up eventually.

There's a HD remake on the PS3 that fixes many of those problems.

PS2: Okami.
This would've been my answer because it sold like shit, but it does have a pretty good cult following, and has had around 5 or 6 re-releases so far. One of my favorite games--maybe my favorite ever--and definitely overlooked.

Comfort game: I don't really do comfort games. Harvest Moon series, Stardew, and Animal Crossing all fall into this category though and I enjoy them all.

Depends on how I'm feeling. Right now I'm in the mood for Harvest Moon 64, but SNES and Back to Nature are really nice, too. Stardew is the best game of them all, tho

comfort game is a fun one. here's my very specific answer: the franchise mode in madden nfl games or the equivalent dynasty/career mode in other sports games. madden is my example because it's the sports game series i've been playing the longest, nearly 25 years now. in those 25 years it has barely changed and the core gameplay is almost exactly the same, which is an understandable point of criticism for a lot of people but for me it's nice and comforting to lose myself in years and years of franchise building, build strong attachments to players who do not exist, and do impossible things like win the carolina panthers a super bowl.

Not a huge football fan, but I did love playing NFL 07's Franchise Mode.

Comfort Game: For me, I go to play a comfort game when I need to shut my brain off, push out all the intrusive and negative thoughts, and just go with the flow. I need a game that puts me in a meditative state where my reflexes completely take over. For a long time in my life that would be something like Tetris or Pac-Man but the last decade or so they've been usurped by The Binding of Isaac. Definitely not what most people would consider a "comfort game" because of the themes and vibe, but when I play it I can just zone out and become a bullet-hell dodging God.

one of the peak years for it was 05 (since that was also the last year the nfl 2k series was able to compete against it), in that year they had some nfl radio guy who would report on the week-in week-out happenings of the league and occasionally have people "call in" for trivia and what have you. the week-to-week scores and headlines were put in a newspaper format which was so much better than the asinine social media format they go with nowadays (dogg it is so cooked in, like, the FIFA games now lol. also i will never call them ea sports fc). it felt way more immersive which is sad given that this game is twenty years old at this point

The Tony Bruno show. I loved that element of the game. Added some depth to it.

I always found with franchise mode that I enjoyed having players rack up great career stats moreso than winning Super Bowls. Madden has one of the weirdest difficulty curves where All-Pro is easy to win on most of the time, but All-Madden is completely impossible, so I felt like I could win the Super Bowl every single season. But it's fun to draft a rookie RB or WR and have them lead the league most years. That said, I'm not sure if I ever made it more than 6-7 seasons because once most of the league is comprised of drafted players, the game feels less fun. It's not so bad on your own team because you drafted them, but every other team is filled with randoms at that point.

Comfort game: Probably crosswords would be the best fit, but not sure that counts. Maybe if I used an app? But I prefer paper.

So I guess then NHL 94.

Honorable mention to just going swinging around new York in the PS Spiderman games.

Underrated Game: Honestly this one is a bit challenging for me because I don't really pay a lot of attention to public perception of games and just kind of play what I like. That said, I'm going to say Stranger of Paradise. It's a "Final Fantasy" game but seeing as it follows the story of FFI it's as basic as you'd expect. The main character basically is a giant meme. The combat and use of classes is what I wish FFXVI was to be perfectly honest. It's basically Nioh with a Final Fantasy skin and honestly nostalgic me is here for it.

Comfort Game: I don't really "go back and play old games" anymore so this one is challenging to think of. That said, the game that has steadily been in my rotation for years are the games in the Worms franchise. There's just something comforting about my wife and I trying to murder eachother's army of worms in the most creative ways possible.

Comfort game: any recent NHL game, right now its NHL 24. I don't play on a hard mode, and mostly just play the superstar mode, just skate around firing shots and making slick passes, whiffing on back checks going for big hits.

When I just want to zone out for 30 minutes, I fire that up. (My guy has 45G-80A in 55 games, I'm like Connor McDavid but on the Bruins)

I used to have a 5 season long player on NHL 14, which I think is the last really good NHL game.

the single player career mode in nhl games is so funny. it's been the exact same for like four years now. when my wife and i booted nhl 25 up on the ea play free trial and the career mode started with that same old dude on the porch in the icy mountains making a call we immediately uninstalled it lol

Wanna know something crazy? It's the same shit that was introduced 10 years ago in NHL 14's Live the Life, but done with cutscenes instead of it being text-based.

Yeah, people give EA crap about Madden (rightfully so) not changing much, but because the NHL series is such a lower revenue game they do even less year over year. They peaked at NHL 14 in the modern era, since then and especially with the PS5, they've not even tried to make a better game.

Comfort Game: This would probably be Fire Pro Wrestling World, not that there's really much gaming involved lol. It's mostly going into Fire Promoter, setting up a card, then watching it go. Honorary mention to College Football '25 as there's something therapeutic about just loading up my dynasty and simming and recruiting. First franchise mode that's really worked for me because salary caps and such aren't involved.

Most annoying character: I feel like most people are going to answer Navi. I actually found Navi kinda charming. But anyone who answers Navi has never had the displeasure of encountering Fi, who has 0 personality and 1 gimmick the entire game. She's also way more intrusive than Navi, interrupting gameplay throughout the entire game to give obvious advice. Worst character ever.

Most annoying character: Paimon from Genshin. Palpable amounts of hate.
Yup this is exactly who I had in mind when I saw this one on the calendar.

Most annoying character: Paimon. Can single handedly ruin what is honestly an extremely high quality F2P game because holy fuck every time Paimon opens her mouth???

Most Annoying Character: Tingle

I had to make sure there wasn't a "least favorite character" day, since there isn't, Tingle is my pick for this one. I despise Tingle. Not only is he all sorts of weird and annoying, but he's a slave driver. Fucking Tingle, and no, I don't mean the way he would definitely enjoy. Tingle needs death.

HMs: Bowser Jr in Super Mario Sunshine, Vinny in Max Payne 2, Slippy and Falco in Star Fox, Vega in Street Fighter 2 (as a boss character), those fucking gophers in Super Mario Kart.

This, so much! Goddamn Tingle! Creepy middle age looking weirdo in a green leotard...
