UT 2004 was more my jam. Bridge of Fate for days.
I don't remember playing much of 2004 tbh - googled this level and doesn't look familiar. Facing Worlds was where I spent most of my time. Also ran a lot of Instagib Coret with my clan at the time.
I sat for a good minute trying to decide between KOTOR and Jade Empire.
KOTOR was the other title I considered here myself - imo, those are the top two RPGs on Xbox.

Listing two SRW games on day 30 made me realize I kinda sorta did them a little bit dirty in not mentioning the series for Best OST. The series has produced just constant bangers for slamming robots against each other over the course of its rather sizeable life, both in their own original music as well as their instrumental renditions of themes from the robot shows they've included over the years. While I don't think there's a singular SRW game I could put up for Best OST (especially since they do get a good bit of mileage out of each theme any time a robot/series is used in multiple games), I do feel the series deserved a mention.

Anyway have a selection of some my favorite tracks for the new year from a niche series because i got nothing better to do besides this and watching football:

I saw Mercury Meltdown Revolution for sale the other day, and remembered that it's such an underrated Wii title. Best use of motion controls, and a really fun, well-designed game. It can be annoying sometimes for colorblind people, but that's about the only flaw. Love that game.

Also, thanks to @VashTheStampede for posting this thread. Loved thinking each day every new topic, and I loved reading everyone's answers. I even wish more people participated because I loved hearing so much from everyone.

Maybe @Raine can come back at some point and answer all of these at once 😄

oh yeah let me get back around to this

i left off on favorite soundtrack and this is something i have put a ton of thought into over the years. my top five is, in no order, sonic r, sonic adventure 2: battle, fire emblem: genealogy of the holy war, celeste, and sayonara wild hearts. sonic r stands out to me as the game with perhaps the greatest gap between how fun it is to play and how good the soundtack is. sayonara wild hearts is something i can only describe as an album that you play like a video game.

what's next? supporting/side character? i mean i think my favorite fictional character of all time nino fire emblem counts for this. other honorable mentions include melia antiqua from xenoblade and kinzie from saints row.

ok cool favorite series. i mean it's fire emblem but i think i can also fairly answer rgg/yakuza/like a dragon as well.

favorite series exclusive species? love a weirdly specific question. i would say the laguz from fire emblem but that puts me in danger of too many fire emblem answers in a row. instead i will go with chao from sonic.

favorite genre is games with checklists or turn based combat. if a game gives me both you might as well just kill me.

most anticipated game is, ahem, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

and then favorite games by console. in the interest of time and space i'm gonna limit it to consoles i've actually owned physical copies of

N64: i love you mischief makers but Star Fox 64
GCN: Kirby Air Ride. easy
Wii: there was no other wii game like Xenoblade Chronicles
Wii U: Super Mario 3D World deserved its port
Switch: its a trite answer but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. splat 3 close second

GB/GBC: Mario Tennis
GBA: Fire Emblem (also fav of all time)
DS: Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days
3DS: Kid Icarus: Uprising. free him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

360: College Hoops 2K8. lol
PS4: Yakuza 0
PS5: ROLLERDROME
Vita: lmao
PC: Deus Ex

I'm way late to the party, but I figured I would answer a few of these.

Day 1: Your first video game - Super Mario Bros. on the NES. My earliest memory of playing video games was this. I have a vivid memory of my brother getting me stuck in the wall near the end of one of the water levels and me being very upset.

Day 11: Comfort Game - I'll go with Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES. This is my favorite sports game of all time and one of my favorites of any genre. I know I can pick it up and at any time and have a good time. Just pure, simple fun. An arcade style football game, but with all the teams, players, and full season mode (and stat tracking). And all the players had distinct attributes that truly made it a unique experience no matter what team you played with.

Day 22: Favorite in game quote - "Hey, you! How about lending me your clothes? No dice?! What a drag." - the king in Super Mario Bros. 3 if you defeat one of the Koopa kids with the hammer bros. suit.

Day 24: Best OST
NES
- There are so many great ones, but I'll list some of my favorites from the games I owned.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tecmo Super Bowl
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project
  • Gremlins 2: The New Batch - Sneaky good soundtrack from an actually good movie-based game.
Gameboy - This handheld is just as nostalgic as the NES for me, as it could accompany me on long road trips and such.
  • Super Mario Land - The songs are so simple and yet so catchy, and they will forever be part of the soundtrack of my childhood.
  • Donkey Kong '94 - I remember when I got this game, I was concerned that it might just be a port of the original arcade game, and I was pleasantly surprised it was so much more. Once you get past the first few levels that are like the original arcade game, it expands into a whole world of tons of levels. It's a really fun platforming puzzle game, and some of the jumps Mario uses in Mario 64 originated in this Gameboy game. I highly recommend checking this game out if you haven't before. "Hey, that's great. You were going to say something about the music?" Oh yeah, it's got some great tunes throughout, but it's still worth mentioning if only for this song that plays during the final showdown with Donkey Kong (complete with a rocking 8-bit guitar solo):

SNES - I didn't own this system growing up, but I have since discovered some great OST's on youtube (first two on the list) and the SNES Classic (next two on the list).
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 - Plenty of bangers in this game. Stickerbush Symphony, Hot Head Bop, Mining Melancholy, Forest Interlude, In a Snowbound Land
  • Chrono Trigger - What's not to love here? Peaceful Days, Corridors of Time, Schala's Theme, Guardia Millennial Fair, Secret of the Forest, Wind Scene, Frog's Theme
  • Megaman X - So many epic tracks for an epic game. These songs perfectly capture the fast-paced action of this game. Even the password theme is super catchy.
  • Yoshi's Island - Athletic Theme, Flower Garden, Underground Theme, the opening Music Box Theme, and of course the Map Theme that progressively adds more parts the further into the game you get.
Sega Genesis - I didn't have a ton of games for this system, as I received it as a gift from my uncle and only had the games he already had for it. Earthworm Jim's OST stood out to me the most out of my limited library.

N64
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Almost seems cliche, but how could I not mention this game? Truly iconic music throughout. Majora's Mask has fantastic music as well.
  • Goldeneye 007 - The music in this game truly fits the James Bond style and aesthetic perfectly. And they get every drop they can out of the classic Bond theme motif. I think what puts it over the top is the care, love, and attention to detail they put into all aspects. Even the pause music is awesome. Plus they composed not one, but two elevator themes that both sound great, all for an area you likely barely spent any time in.
GameCube - the last system I spent a significant amount of time with, and even then I didn't play a wide variety of its games. I have to go with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I could almost give it to this for Dragon Roost Island alone, but it has great music throughout. Outset Island, Windfall Island, The Great Sea, I also really like the music that plays during the intro. I'll never forget the first time watching the intro and getting pumped when the original theme song kicked it.

That was one of the most thought-out posts in this thread. Especially loved reading about all of the soundtracks. I was nodding my head along with them. I recommend checking out Super Mario RPG's soundtrack too if you haven't heard it yet.

Also, never knew:
1. About the hammer suit quote from the king
2. About Gremlins 2, or that it's actually good!

While I haven't played as many games as some, I've always enjoyed and appreciated video game history, especially from '85-'05. And the music is something that has always stuck with me. It's the perfect thing to put on in the background while working on other stuff. I will definitely have to check out Super Mario RPG's soundtrack!

1. He says something different for the frog suit and tanooki suit as well.
2. It was made by Sunsoft, who also made Batman on NES, which is more widely known and considered to be a good movie-based game.

Sunsoft is such an awesome dev from that era. They recently relaunched after a period of relative stagnation, and are producing new takes on old franchises. Ufouria 2 recently released, which is a sequel to a 40-some year old NES game. They even released a "Sunsoft is back!" Collection of retro games
