[2024] MLB Season Discussion Thread

This one looks to be academic. Mets can't score with RISP again and the team's getting their asses handed to them again. Unless a miracle of sorts happens, the MLB's gonna get their wish of a Dodgers vs Yankees World Series.

I feel more confident with the Yankees going against the dodgers than the Mets if that makes you feel any better
have you seen the Mets bullpen. Yankees would eat them alive also as of me writing this, mets are 1-8 with RISP you still only feel confident against the Dodgers?

The Mets have been the best team since the end of May. Their bullpen sucks, but the Dodgers have no pitching. Their Yankees will feat on the Dodger pitching

the Mets have left 12 men on base this game alone and about 35 this whole series. not that it matters now I don't give a fuck if they were the best team since june both their offense and Bullpen were ass THIS SERIES you should not have been afraid of them

Lots to reflect on for the Mets in the offseason. As nice as it was to see the team comeback from being down in the dumps and overcome adversity to get here, there are still gaping holes that need to be addressed in the offseason and this series with the Dodgers have exploited those faults. Not only is the bullpen ass, but the very familiar story of this team not being able to convert with RISP has tremendously hurt them.

Every game that was lost to the Dodgers, the Mets got slaughtered, which goes to show despite there being flashes of potential with this team, the fact of the matter is the Mets still have a long way to go. The key lesson here is that there's always a limit to how long you can successfully fly by the seat of your pants. Credit where it's due, the Mets did it for longer than most teams are capable of, but once they hit that brick wall, that was it.

This World Series has garnered more viewers than I anticipated. Was expecting numbers to be in the mid 20s range at most, but as far as the US & Japan is concerned, they've damn near hit the 30M mark. The last time we've seen these kind of numbers was nearly 30 years ago in 1995 when the Cleveland Indians took on the Atlanta Braves. Hell, the last time the sport has sniffed the 25M mark was 20 years ago. Given how much times have changed with not as many people subscribing to cable TV & such, plus popularity across other sports out there having increased, it's incredible that this World Series managed to reach those kind of numbers.

But I also hate how it showcases the ugly side of the sport. The Yankees, Dodgers, MLB, and media get to have their cake & eat it. They get to milk the shit out of this at the expense of everyone else.

NY and LA are also two of the largest markets in the country for baseball and viewership with smaller markets has hurt ratings over the years. I'm not all that surprised. I wouldn't be surprised if the clear majority of viewers are exclusively from those fanbases.

You're also going to have people watching the series just because of the names involved. Ohtani/Betts vs Judge/Soto sells itself, and it's the kind of matchup that will draw eyes into the product regardless. But yes, the fact that it's the 2 biggest markets in baseball going head-to-head definitely puts it over the top.

Plus, you got Ohtani & Yamamoto spiking interest in Japan. Another factor to take into account.

The issue is that we really don't have enough nationally broadcast baseball games throughout the season. ESPN and MLBN are the only networks who regularly play games all season. ESPN only has games on Sunday night. MLBN isn't a basic cable channel and there are too many services that don't even have MLBN. YTTV was the biggest name that had MLBN and they couldn't come to an agreement so they dropped the channel and almost all baseball content.

FS1 has games on occasion. TBS might still broadcast games on occasion, but they don't broadcast Braves games all the time like they used to. Same with WGN and Cubs/White Sox games.

Baseball is an overly localized sport and MLB does an AWFUL job at promoting their game and their shit blackout policy does not help.

Yankees have had an advantage of being both from NYC, but also being one of the most consistently dominant teams throughout the span of baseballs history. It's a Worldwide recognized brand, like Coca-Cola. You'll see Yankees hats in almost every country.

Earlier in the playoffs, MLB played an add that featured only Ohtani and Judge, claiming both were generational. It was suggested that MLB accidentally played the ad that was meant to promote the World Series matchup they anticipated, but if that were the case, Betts, Cole, Soto, Stanton, Freeman would have appeared in the ad, too. Ohtani and Judge may be nearly as "generational" as they come, but there were so many big names in the playoffs, and it's completely disrespectful to them to play an ad that only has two of their players.

Don't get me started on the fucking blackouts. NHL has this in place too and it irritates the shit out of me how they talk about coming up with ways to grow the game, but do nothing to address them. How do they expect to bring more eyes into the product when they have these restrictions making it difficult for people to watch the sport?

If there's one good thing to come out of this, it's seeing Yankees fans having a meltdown over the team's performance in the World Series. This being equated to a disaster of a season, plus you have people on the verge of shitting their pants because they're worried making the World Series guarantees Boone & Cashman's job security, lol.

I didn’t expect them to get this far. They are an incomplete team that was carried by Judge and Soto all year. Judge wears himself out carrying the team on his back all season, then presses during the postseason and can’t produce

Cashman has a job for life. He’s as close to a Steinbrenner as one can be. Boone would be unfairly fired just to give the fans something. He just follows the analytics and is in lockstep with the front office. They’ll replace him with a carbon copy and nothing will change, because the Yankees have one of the worst analytics department in the sport. I was so upset they fired Girardi for Boone

Aaron Boone is, was and always will be a piece of shit. And he's never been a good manager.

Girardi was a good person, good manager. But with the teams he had... losing was silly.

Neither did I, and if we're being honest here, a result like this is what's to be expected when the team has the holes in its roster like the Yankees have. Every single year, they have struggled with these same issues. They go cold when it matters most, the pitching outside of Cole isn't enough to get it done, and then it's rinse & repeat the next year.

The Yankees were fortunate to get this far. I see Judge is taking the brunt of the heat and that's a shame, because I thought he did well having to carry the team on his back. There's only so much him & Soto can do.

Ouch, that was a comically awful way for the Yankees to go out. I guess we somewhat got ourselves a tiny bit of satisfaction, though it still pains me greatly knowing that Ohtani won the World Series the season after leaving Anaheim.

And that Mike Trout will never win one.

You can't help but to think what could've been. It's a sad state of affairs with a team that had 2 generational talents, one of them now having left the organization and having to watch him win the World Series with the Dodgers.

Fuck Arte Moreno.
I don't have as much sympathy for Trout though. He CHOSE to stay there knowing the Angels were never going to be a legit contender.

Player Opt-out available after 2024

- If exercised, team can void opt-out decision by adding 10th year (2029) at $36M.

I don't think I've seen that before, but that's a handy clause.
