Would you want to play for John Henry's Red Sox? :p
When they first bought the team? Yes. Now, no. But I also would want to play for either NY team less.

That said, this is the issue with baseball. A team can overpay by hundreds of millions and STILL players will only sign with NY or LA. It's actually pathetic.

I mean Mets got spurned by springer, and he didn't go to the Yankees or LA, he went to Toronto

ESPN NY has been saying for a while that they believe it was all about the money for Soto, so once Cohen said he would go above any other offer, it was obvious where he was going… that is a lot of money for a player who is mediocre on defense, but it isn’t my money, and he’s worth it on offense
I think he's fairly mediocre on offense too. At least DEFINITELY not worth that contract, and it's one the Mets will regret in a few years.

Aren't they STILL paying Bobby Bonilla?

I thought the Red Sox were dumb for increasing their initial offer. I am glad they missed him. I don't see what's so impressive about a .260 hitter who can put up 35-40 HRs.... I mean, He's just JD Martinez that can play (poor) defense.

Soto is definitely not mediocre on offense. 288/419/569/989 slash this past season, plus a 7.9 WAR. Only his 2022 year had underwhelming stats. He's also 25, which is why he got 15 years instead of the 10 that Ohtani got.

His defense is below average, but no one pays for defense nor do they value defense. Baseball is all about analytics right now, and getting on base and hitting homeruns is all that matters.

Definitely an overpay, though. He is NOT worth more than Ohtani is, especially if Ohtani is allowed to pitch.

I’ve said for years that Scott Boras is the worse thing to ever happen to baseball
we almost had a win this past season. Dude was ruining players chances of getting paid and getting to Spring Training because he was getting greedy. Unfortunately Soto stuck with Boras even though Boras was the reason he didn't get a contract LAST season. He was supposed to be with the Padres, but Boras, being the greedy asshole he was, kept pushing for a dying man to shell out more money, and contract talks died when the owner did.

they apparently offered $700 mil so they did try Cohen just has fuck you money

I think they did what they have done the last few years, once they know they are out of the bidding, they put in a representative offer to say they did, prove they did, but had no intention of actually winning the bid.

They knew 700M wasn't going to win, but they did it to show the fans they are trying.

We don't believe them.

TBF, Soto isn't worth 700+million.

Sure, he's good, but he's not THAT good.

Yeah, that's essentially what it is. Make it look like they were in the running just to give people lip service. They never had any intentions of bringing in Soto.

Agreed. He is one of the best left handed hitters in the world and he's only 25. But most teams need more than 1 star player, and that would destroy your payroll.

My comment was more the state of Red Sox ownership. Charge the highest ticket prices, high concessions, and lowball every free agent or current player. Refuse to sign Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, don't make any offers to the high priced pitchers on the market when you are in last place 4 of the last 5 years. Instead they pay for project players, or oft injured players that they get on a deal. They are lucky that the farm system is stocked with hitters, otherwise the team would be screwed.

They only paid Raffy Devers because the fan backlash was so bad and their attendance was dropping.

Red Sox specifically need major help in the pitching department, they have no pitching prospects at all. I'd rather them use that 700M to get two bonafide starting pitchers.

Toronto should be in on that like major market teams. The Toronto Metro area has over 6.7 million people in it. That's a larger population than all but 17 states, all in and around the one city.

The Greater Boston area only has 5 million people, for instance.

Yeah yeah, sure they were.

Its a running meme among Giants fans that it's reported we "just missed out" on all the major free agents that go to NY/LA.

Its shit the media does to keep other fans roped in with false hope.

Plus considering their fandom is pretty strong across the whole country. May not lead to ticket sales, but lots of merch.

Plus plus, they are owned by god damn fucking Rogers, so yeah there is money there

Still crazy to think Francisco Cabrera's clutch hit and Bonds failing to throw Sid Bream's slow ass out was a moment that sent the Pirates on a downward spiral for decades to come.
Still sad Mark Cuban didn't end up buying them when he was shopping for a sports team.

Pittsburgh has always been my #2 team
