Right???

I'm hoping I eventually have a breakthrough on this one though because I love the story, the characters, the setting, fuckin D&D, everything else.

I just feel like I suck at the combat and that takes me out of the game. Pretty much my problem with Dark Souls and such but I feel like I SHOULDN'T suck at this.

Fair, I do kind of suck at the combat and only got good when I used the mod that allowed me to use all party members. I don't want to have to be bothered with buffs and debuffs. Sure for a boss, but I dont want to have to worry about it for every encounter. Sometimes I want to just wipe the floor. Even then I still had to be smart-ish since I want using all the systems and was mostly brute forcing it

That's exactly why I put the game down. I have always wanted to like CRPGs because they should be exactly the type of game I want, but they're too slow and complicated, whether it is turn based or strictly pause-based D&D combat.

Then I realized that they are too open ended and I don't get the satisfaction of watching a story unfold as the writers intended. I am glad it caters to people that want to make their own story and sequence of events but it's not for me.

On other hand, I have never been able to get into a Survival Game really. Figured that was another genre that would just be closed off for me. But I am absolutely LOVING Dune: Awakening. The setting is doing a lot of heavy lifting for me, I'm sure, but I am utterly enthralled. I'm normally the member of the friend group that lags behind everyone else as I'm way too ADD to focus on one game enough to keep up with my more power-gaming inclined friends, but so far in this one, I'm the one leading the way in everything. Wild.
Oh shit, I had no idea this was an open world survival game. Do you need friends to play or is it fun alone?

I've been playing completely solo so far because I'm an old man who wakes up before dawn and my friends are night owls in their 30s and I've been having a great time.

Is there a good game that's not BG3 but is a good representation of if I would enjoy a CRPG without buying BG3?

I don't have a hefty gaming budget and the concept of BG3 has always interested me but I'm really not sure. I'll likely be dropping Plus on renewal so looking at those long-stretch games.

I just played a mission where I got drunk and learned another language, how to swim and have a dog talk to me!

Some really cool systems, if they they notice you snooping around and something goes missing they'll accuse you, if you steal a key off someone they'll change the locks in a couple days , and perhaps my favorite , if you walk around over encumbered, your strength will increase slowly

Going back to playing Final Fantasy XV. I started that one 2 years ago and never progressed much through the story due being way more interested with Ghost of Tsushima at the time. Doing that for now while I'm waiting to save up enough money to buy FFXVI, but now it appears I have another obstacle in my way....

It occurred to me FFVI is on XBox now and has been since late 2024. There's another game I'm going to have to add to my wishlist. That one was my introduction into the series, and it's also my favorite.

Probably going to put Final Fantasy XV on the back burner again. I'm finding myself getting bored with the game. The story feels bland, there's a whole lot of nothing despite it being an open world game, and the way the story is told over multiple forms of media is a mess. Not that it's terrible for my standards, but you can tell the game is an unfinished product. It's a game that leaves so much to be desired, and once you do finish it, one that you could put away and not play again.

The game I'm putting it on the back burner in favor for? Clair Obscur. I was reminded by a friend the game was on Game Pass. Thanks to him, I'm installing it right now. That one is of interest.

I decided to start Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2. Despite my frustration that #4 is not retaining its original form in the upcoming 3 + 4 remake, I figured that I never played the remake of 1 + 2, despite getting it from PS+ for free.

I played a lot more of 1 than 2 back in the day, but definitely enjoyed both. I've put close to an hour in so far and this is just how I remember it. The only difference is that you get two joysticks now, so you can control the camera better (though it's still a little wonky).

I've heard that getting the platinum takes forever, but that has never stopped me before :chuckle

I am not understanding Yakuza 0's combat at all. The tutorials in this game are really shit for the combat system. I can't figure it out -- is it simple? Is it deep? It seems so random. Enemies can counter-attack you seemingly randomly, sometimes your blocks work, sometimes they don't. The lock-in feature is annoying (you have to hold R1 the entire time to activate it????) and only works if you're already pointing in the direction of your enemy. The dodge feature seems to work only every now and then. I'm completely stuck on the first boss.

So far, I've found the experience in Clair Obscur to be breathtaking. Right off the bat, I fell in love with the setting, characters, and especially the turn-based combat system. This one's a real gem and for those who are subscribed to Game Pass, I'd highly recommend downloading this one. You will not regret playing it!

Playing Breath of the Wild on the Wii U.

Progressing seems... slow compared to past Zelda games. I only JUST got my first heart and I feel like I've been wandering around for hours. Link feels weak, he can die in one hit to low level enemies. There's no dodge function like there has been in past 3D Zelda games. Items are not as plentiful as they usually are in Zelda games. There's no real good way to judge how durable weapons are or know how long they'll last before breaking. There's no repair function from what I can tell. There's supposed to be a way to get an item called flint that allows you to start campfires without wasting a fire arrow, but there's no indication as to where I can get that (the internet just says "where there are rocks").

Performance in the Wii U has been pretty solid so far. Framerate drops towards the beginning but not when engaged in combat.

Oh, and the Pro Controller sucks balls. The thumbstick is inaccurate as he'll. I had an easier time aiming with the Gamepad (motion turned off, of course). There doesn't seem to be any good options other than official controllers. 8bit hasn't made an adapter for the Wii U and you have to use Homebrew to hack the system so it works. The box says its compatible with the original Wii Pro controller but apparently that was a printing error.

Gamepad implementation is poor. Only gyro usage and a constant "Tap here to play on Gamepad only" prompt on the screen. Would have been nice to have an Inventory or Map screen on the Gamepad. I dislike having to go into a menu to drop an item because I'm overburdened or to use a food item. Would have liked to have the option to fiddle with my Inventory on the Gamepad.

Loving Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

A great follow up to the first. It feels a little more new player friendly which I understand, but still a little jank. My biggest disappointment so far is the world just feels so much more empty. Some of that has to do with bigger maps, but man I miss discovering stuff when I'd travel around. The towns are more numerous but smaller with fewer amenities. Nit picks overall and easily a GOTY contender for me

Now that I've had more time with THPS 1+2, I'll add that they really put a lot of extra content into the game than I remember. Not so much the levels, as those are the same as they always were, but there are a lot of challenges, unlockable items, and multiple ways to do the career mode. It was sort of necessary because both games are pretty easy (especially if you remembered how to do any of the trickier parts).

The thing I'm enjoying most about the game is that it's easy to pick up and play when you only have a few minutes. With most games, if I have less than 30 minutes, there isn't much I can do, but this was almost designed for when you only have 10 minutes/

I just cheesed the Myahm Agana Shrinein BotW. Its the first one I've encountered that forces motion controls on you with a stupid ball maze. You can't control the camera, so sometimes the thing blocks your view. I found that you can rotate the board so that a new ball falls on the hime stretch of the maze and all I had to do was roll it down and flick it so it makes the gap. Was not completing it the intended way....

I've put a few hours here and there into the first Death Stranding game at the recommendation of a friend. I kept talking shit about it being a "walking simulator". Fuck no, it's a "one trip with the groceries" simulator.
How is it? It can't imagine myself enjoying it at all, but I'm not a very picky gamer

Look, I spent probably a year and a half telling that asshole that I'm not playing a walking simulator and giving him shit for being so hyped on it.

Initially, I mocked it because the premise is one RPG cliché that I cannot stand... Fetch quests. Surprisingly enough, it's refreshed enough to make it work. You get the idea from the start, but, your actions feel like they have importance in the game. Certain shipments are timed, you have to be cognizant of the fragility of some, and you have to have a mind for logistics to be efficient and productive enough.

It took me about an hour to get out of the basic tutorial but between the scenes and only sinking 15-20 minutes into a sitting at a time. Within the first 3 hours of gameplay, I realized that it was one of those games I was going to play through to the end. It was described to me as "relaxing", and that's exactly what it is. I have the data to prove it...

Screenshot_20250703-194718.png

The green circle denotes my peak physical activity for the day, yard work in July. The blue is when I was playing the game.

This is me admitting I was wrong:

Screenshot_20250704-000429.png

There's just enough action to keep you engaged, and the lulls of wandering through the world are perfectly juxtaposed by random encounters and boss battles. It's kinda heavy on the scenes, but, that's expected with any kind of game that invests the time in world-building and creating a thorough storyboard.

I don't consider myself a game snob or a super heavy enthusiast, but, I'm picky. I don't get to play too many games, so, it's gotta reel me in to be something I keep coming back to. This is definitely one of those games you can play for 15-20 minutes at a time and feel like you accomplished something in the game in that time, but, I could also absolutely see myself getting stoned and sinking a few hours into it at a time.

Would I have bought it day one? It depends on what else was released at the time. Would I pay full price for it? Absolutely. I could see the replay value early on, and the story is definitely built to be a slow-burn.

Its a weird fuckin game and I'm not sure I mean that in a good way.

I spent a bit of time with it when it was brand new. There were parts that were honestly kind of meditating and others that were almost breathtaking...and then there were parts that were absolutely frustrating.

One of my favorite gaming memories was spending time making a nice bridge and road over some rough terrain, and then logging in a day later to thousands of Likes from other players who used my little highway in their game.

I dunno. The Director's Cut is available with the tier of PS+ I'm on so I'm thinking of giving it another look.

I'll preface this rant with the fact that I've been told that every thing I'm about to whine about has apparently been rectified in the second installment. Why it wasn't patched for the OG, I'll never know.

The sheer amount of screens you have to skip through for each order completion is one of the most infuriating parts of the game for me. There's no reason whatsoever that Kojima needed that many screens to display that much data about how you ranked on the completion of the order. Now, I get that there's an online competitive aspect where people try for best times, most points, etc., but... there's simply no damn reason we need to cycle through half a dozen (or more, I refuse to count them, I just mash the X button til it's over) per order.

Vehicles are another frustrating element. The collision system could absolutely use some work. I've gotten air over massive boulders, yet rendered my trike or truck undrivable with smaller ones. I've gotten stuck in places that momentum led me, which adds to the importance of plotting out your moves, but also frustrates the hell out of you because you know damn well a real vehicle wouldn't have gotten stuck in that manner.

Then, there's the scenes... I don't understand how I have to hit X to skip some, and Start (fuck you, "Options" button, you're still "Start" to me) for others, while others require Circle to skip. I'm looking at you, 3 skips to take a shower.

There are some parts I've noticed so far that are so clunky it's a wonder they made it through QA, and others that are so refined, it's hard to believe they're happening in the same game.
