You enter Seagrow caves, finding the sandy bar to the side of the water leading back further into the moldy smelling rock. You follow it for a brief time before the water starts to shallow out ever so slightly. Here, the ground is more densely covered in mushrooms of all variety, but there's still a stretch of ocean water in the middle of the cave entrance.

89374927.png

You edge along the cave walls, noting that the light begins to fail the further back into the cave entrance you get. It's still bright enough to see without issue, though, and you forge ahead. You move forward and notice a particularly large growth of mushrooms.

8027348964.png

The Spore Servant Octopus does not wait before it rushes to attack you, with it's mushroom caps turning a myriad vibrant bright shades as a threat. It writhes across the rocks with a soft sound belying it's size.

COMBAT BEGINS. AGAIN.

(( @Smacktard You're coincidentally up first.

Aims'Orreh is about 30 feet from the monster.))

Oi, Moonsprout, still think this thing is a harmless creature?!
Go easy on him! The poor creature feels threatened and cornered. You'd act just the same if we invaded your home and started raiding your fridge!

Moonsprout uses Animal Friendship, using a morsel of bread he's kept in his pocket since Dragon's Rest. He moves past his comrades and slowly approaches the animal as close as he can get.

There there, gentle beast. We mean you no harm. The big green one might look mean, but that axe is all for show. He can barely carve up a turkey.

@Smacktard
| From where you dawdle in the back of the group, collecting shells that sound like songs and memories of a lifetime, you walk as far as your short little halfling legs can take you, which equates to just in front of Aims.

1706772381799.png

You raise your hand and channel your most animal of mojo. You reach out with your offering of food and project good will and love at this creature.

mojo.png

It bristles at you.

doot.png

Now that you're not at the back of the group, you can tell that this should no longer count as an animal. You can tell that the mushrooms that network through the body of the octopus pulse and contract as it lumbers towards you. It's flesh is tattered and and without color. This is a reanimated giant octopus, and now is more plant than animal.

Your Animal Friendship did nothing.

Dang, I knew I should've learned "Fungus Friendship" instead.

Moonsprout weighs the ethical considerations.

I didn't feel bad about all those other mushrooms I stuffed in my mouth, so why do I feel... different... about this octomush?

Maybe just a little bite won't hurt...

Hah! Maybe it hates you since you ate his children halfling! Though.... in this case i second your idea of eating that too. I want to see how lost you get tripped out on sentient octomushroom.

And the tiefling too wanted sashimi... it'll be a wild night tonight. Bwahahahaa!

Aims is curiously looking at the monster to try to find an obvious weakness. Maybe if he had a bag of salt on them to throw at it... Perhaps the answer is still ax time.

Alright, let's see what we can glean in the area!

Zesty moves to the opposite bank to clear space and give himself clear line of sight on the beast and begins muttering an incantation in Elvish.

Zesty moves to the opposite sand bank from which the adventurers entered and casts Faerie Fire directly on the Octopus to light up a 20ft box around the creature in a purple light.

((My thought here is it should get us all one round through combat where our heavy melee hitters can HOPEFULLY gain advantage against it. We don't want Aims'Orreh missing with his axe again. :link

@Ben - Hopefully I made sense with where I'm attempting to put the box. I'm aiming to put the octopus directly in the middle to light up as much of the surrounding area as I can, so if anything is useful to us around, it's glowing for us. But, mainly I'm hoping this thing fails a dex throw and gives us advantage for a turn. I also hope to move to this area so I have clear line of sight when I start using my bow and keeps me away from Alu for his line of sight.

@Jon
| You wade through the waters at the mouth of the cave, reaching the sandy bank on the other side as the words of your incantation echo out of your throat.

It easily hits the spore monster, lighting it up an enchanting purple.

1706816828658.png

Any attack rolls against the spore guardian octopus have advantage for the duration of the spell, which is 1 minute or until Jon gets smacked. |

This time.... this time, i will NOT leave without blood on my hands! My own or others! LETS GET IT OOONNNNN! RRRAAAAGGGHHH!!!

Aims gets into a fit of RAGE, and also makes way right directlymin the face of the octomush.

Lets see how you like THIS!

Aims already oozing his rage filled red glow, ax prepared to cleave through anything in his path. Sizing up the octopus, he sees the the large tentacles as thr first obstacle and charges at them. Ducking and dodging the first swipes directed at him, Aims raises his ax, aiming at the third tentacle coming towards him, and
brings his ax down at the tentacle like a guillotine.

Aims'Orreh Mwuh'Bwadd
@Jawneh
| Your axe strikes true and embeds itself in a tentacle briefly, before it's ripped free.
You deal 8 points of damage to spore servant octopus. |

Nac McWeeble

Nac runs along the sandy bank, towards the octomush but stops after 25 feet and thinks Maybe I should take a look at that beastie to see if I can see sometin' useful..

Nac uses his dwarven eyeballs to peek into the being of the octomush to gleam something spicy about it

((@Ben what would be the check here? Nature or Perception? I'll roll a d20, and maybe you can add the correct modifier? +1 for Nature or +3 for Perception.

@Jawneh I used your wording because it cracked me up :D ))

((We'll go nature. Perception is more about spotting things in the moment, not recalling knowledge. Zesty already "checked" for objects in the area with Faerie Fire and found nothing on the ground.))

You analyze the octopus.

987985345.png

You pick up a small piece of tentacle that Aims'Orreh had cleaved off, and realize you've seen something similar to this before. The gears didn't turn when you first heard the term "Myconid", but you now recall reading about other sentient fungi species, including ones that are capable of reanimating the dead through use of magical spores. It's quite likely that is the case here, and this giant octopus was brought back to life by the Myconids to serve as their guardian.

The nature of this plant-creature's condition likely means it's less dexterous than a regular animal, and likely slower too. The creature is also technically blind, though possesses some kind of echolocation and has blindvision within 30 feet.

287983254.png

Indeed. |

aims-png.8356

Aims'Orreh Mwuh'Bwadd
@Jawneh
| The mushrooms of the creature flare red like the color of your rage, seeming to taunt you. As the red lights momentarily distract you, a tentacle the size of a tree-limb swings down and smashes into your shoulder. You roar with anger as you shrug off the blow.

You take 4 points of damage from Spore Servant Octopus ((was 8, but your Rage reduces bludgeoning damage by 1/2)) |

1706856056962.png

@A Pen Pineapple Apple Pen You're up.

It would be helpful if you tried to dodge this time! Be ready to jump out of the way! Be ready for the MORTAL KOMBAT!

Short Order moves a bit for a slightly better angle and then casts Ice knife

((Is it big enough that I can aim for enough away from Aims that the ice explosion doesn't hit him as well?))

Zesty Zapcrackle

((Faerie Fire grants advantage on any attack, so you SHOULD and with that second roll I am glad that I cast the thing now, because that's some good damage my man!))

| Your small feet patter through the sand as you seek to get a better angle on the monster.

1706885723260.png

Your toe touches the edge of the water and it quickly soaks through their wrappings. You focus and gesture with your hands, which looks like some kind of down-forward-punch. A blade of ice crystallizes from the water at your feet and twists up through the air as it forms and grows thicker.

shortorder3.png

You point your finger at the octopus, and the frozen knife hurtles towards it.

shortorder2.png

The shard impacts on the underside of a tentacle, gouging deep into the graying flesh of the monster and sending a plume of magical spore into the air.

You deal 10 points of damage to Spore Servant Octopus.

The ice knife cracks and splinters into several pieces, but most of the fragments bury themselves into the sand, and the few airborne ones spiral past Aims'Orreh and the octopus both. |

((I rolled the DEX save on Aims' just for time/convenience.

1706890536414.png

He dodged. So did the octopus, though.

((Nope! While that seems like it should be how it works, you can still move/attack while holding concentration on a spell without breaking it.

Primarily it'll break if you cast something else that requires concentration, if you take damage and fail a CON saving throw, or if you're just straight up knocked unconscious/die.))
