I recently went on ADHD meds, and they (the doctor) wanted me to do a drug test shortly after, and my reaction was "uhh what're you testing for exactly?" followed by "and what happens when I test positive for some of those things?"

Having to do drug tests to get drugs, what the heck.

Weird, I didn't have to do anything of the sort to get mine. Kind of dumb to make you take a drug test after you've started taking amphetamines.

I started Vyvanse again myself BTW.

I'm on Vyvanse (or whatever the generic is) because I don't want to take multiple pills to have it last all day. Adderall makes me less of a crazy person though. I mean, Vyvanse isn't making me crazy, it's just not helping to counter my natural craziness.

Something you may find interesting is the lowest available dose of 10mg is too intense for me, so I dump it into 250ml of water and only drink about 150-175ml of it. It also makes it take effect more quickly, which is a common complaint with Vyvanse. It's not something that doctors will suggest and it's officially not recommended to drink a partial dose (probably because the mixture will not be perfectly homogenous), but it's something a lot of people do to great effect. I'm very sensitive to stimulants, and found this was the only way to get the right dose for me.

Some people instead drink their dose throughout the day to keep the effect where they want it, but I personally find that nuts because it lasts 14+ hours for me. But if you know someone where it's not lasting long enough, that can be a way to stretch out the effect. Or if your kid just doesn't like to swallow pills, it's an easy way to avoid that, and taking the whole dose in water is something you're officially allowed to do with Vyvanse.

I started at 20, I’m now at 30. It wears off for me after about 5-6 hours. I’ve been taking weekends off, but last Saturday I took it to do work around the house and then 6 hours later I took a nap

My doc started me back on 30mg and I can't say I'm noticing it at all after like 2-3 weeks.

I'm pretty broken though.

For me it’s pretty subtle. It allows me to not use all my mental bandwidth at work so I still have some at home. I hadn’t realized how much it was impacting my home life by having nothing left mentally when I got home for years. I didn’t realize I had nothing left and was giving almost nothing for years.

That's a standard starting dose and most people go up from there, so that seems typical to me. Some people also benefit from combining it with anxiety meds, if their ADHD symptoms have caused them to develop anxiety around finishing tasks, which is pretty common.

Primary care doctors seem to be generally clueless about ADHD, so don't be shy about advocating for yourself. Vyvanse doesn't take weeks to work, so if it's not been working for you, then you probably need something to change.

Agreed. When I get the dose right, I notice mostly two differences. One is that I can keep focused on a task I'm unhappy about doing but do want to get done, without it taking every fiber of my being to do so. Once I get started on it, I get into it, instead of constantly fighting my brain wanting to do other things. The other change is that if something goes awry, it doesn't derail my entire day. Without meds, I get upset and spiral over it and physically cannot redirect my attention to something more productive. I still get upset over dumb bullshit, but now I can put it aside and refocus.

The result of those two things is I can get a reasonable amount of work done during the day and still have some mental and emotional energy to do other stuff afterwards, just like you said.

@Ben kat is right. Vyvanse isn’t one of those drugs that you need to build up in your system. It works when it is in your system and once it wears off, it’s out. If it’s not working then it won’t work

It's not the first time I've been on it, and I believe they had me up to the max dose of 70mg, before they switched me to Adderall because Vyvanse was hard to find at the time.

I'd say I noticed more of an effect when I started taking it the first time, when it did make me feel like I had more spoons at work/home. It's probably helping me somewhat, I have had a slightly better time focusing at work and doing stuff around the house, but it's not really noticeable.

I've got an actual psychiatrist appointment coming up at the end of the month, so hopefully they'll have a bit more of an idea what's going on. :shrug
