30 Days of Movies

Even Scary Movie 3 I feel is the most overlooked of the 90s/2000s spoofs, because of Leslie Nielson's presence in it. It gives it some legitimacy. George Carlin makes an appearance, too... all for Pooty Tang...

I was bouncing back and forth between Billy Madison, Anchorman and Scary Movie 3. I agree Anchorman is that same loud, obnoxious, over the top style of Happy Madison movies, but the dialogue in it is at another level of stupid/confident.

The simple line of "I don't know." is my favorite bit of the movie.

Day 3: Movie that makes me laugh out loud

There are so many movies I could choose here, and comedy is my favorite genre. Everyone has mentioned some absolute gems so far. I'll go with one that hasn't been named yet: Dumb and Dumber

This might be my favorite comedy, or at least on my Mt. Rushmore. Almost every scene is iconic. Jim Carrey is of course Jim Carrey, but considering Jeff Daniels isn't a traditional comedic actor, he may just steal the show. They have great chemistry together and their timing and deliveries are impeccable. There are so many lines that I still find myself quoting to this day.

A Film That Starts With 'The'

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

An ode to, and starring, one of the greatest actors of all time (NOT a meme, I will fight you) Nicolas Cage, which turns out to be a really fun buddy action movie with the wonderful Pedro Pascal.

Day 4: A film that starts with the

The Prestige - I saw this for the first time this past year and really enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that makes you want to immediately watch it again once it's finished. It was cool how the movie itself follows the formula of a magic trick discussed in the film: the Pledge, the Turn, and the Prestige. When you see the twist, you realize it was right there in front of you the whole time, but you miss it because "you want to be fooled."
"But what happened to his brother?"

This will most likely end up as one of my answers later in the thread, it's my #2 favorite movie of all time.

For underrated, I don't know, all my experience is comedies.

Here's a good one for me. Godzilla 98 (the American panned one). I might have watched that 20 times in my life and it might qualify as so bad it's good, and it's an insult to Japan and Godzilla, but I always liked the cast and the silly nature of it.

I just consider it a Godzilla spoof with some fun campiness. It's fun to watch, like if I had no brain.

Most Underrated: I'm with Eye on the Godzilla 98 mention. Offensive language from the stereotypical Italian American NYC character, poor acting, shitty love interest aside, the movie was a bunch of fun.

Other mentions: 16 Blocks is a personal favorite. Richard Donnor's last film met mixed critical and audience reception, but for whatever reason, I loved it. Now that I think about it, it's kinda like a Max Payne movie without the snow and slow-motion but is a total escort mission. Bruce Willis is running from the police (who are the bad guys this time) through NYC, and there's some big conspiracy.

Austin Powers in Goldmember,
both critics and audiences complained about recycled gags and at how cheesy the movie is at times. I loved the movie. One of the funniest movies I've ever watched. I'm honestly a fan of running gags, and the Austin Powers series does a great job of it.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Underworld, and The Hitcher remake all have their host of issues (especially The Hitcher), but I actually think they're better than maybe how they were received. The Hitcher specifically is a total fucking mess. But Sean Bean is so fucking good as a deranged murderer, he totally saves the movie.

Finally, DoA: Dead or Alive. This is my go-to "Guilty Pleasure" movie. The first two acts are just stupid fun. The third act breaks suspension of disbelief and it becomes too stupid to be enjoyable, but until the third act hits, it's a really fun movie. Very much like the first Charlie's Angels movie. It's not a good movie, but it is fun.

Gosh I haven't watched 16 Blocks since seeing it in the theater. Need to revisit that one.

Let's catch up.

1) First movie at theatre: Catch Me if you Can. I never went to the theatre as a kid, heck I'm not even sure I did until after I got my first job.

2) Film you watched over and over as a child: Lion King, I owned it on VHS and would watch it regularly. Oh to be a child again.

3) Film that made you laugh out loud:  Waterboy. There's many that fit this criteria, but it was the first one that entered my head.

4) Film that starts with The: The Happening. I don't know why this is the first movie that popped into my head for this category. Probably because I live near a bunch of trees. Oh, this movie is bad btw.

5) Film that you think is underrated: True Romance. For me this is Tarantino's best film and this is a hill that I will absolutely die on.

I really loved how they took a character who felt listless, useless, depressed, and give him purpose and then it's like a switch was suddenly flipped.

Even better when you understand WHY he was depressed in the first place. Guilt can wreck havoc on a person's psyche. I love redemption stories like that.

You know I love that movie but I refuse to call a movie he didn't direct a "Tarantino movie". That's a Tony Scott movie.

Fuckin LOVE that movie though.

This is absolutely a fair way to look at it. I think in my head I still view it as a Tarantino movie because it's definitely got that writing style - and I think it's Scott's best directed movie.

Day 6 - Film when you feel sad: Mortal Kombat (1995). The first time I saw this was on PPV when I was home sick as a kid. Ever since then, I probably watch it at least once a year.

Day 7 - movie I’d like to see on the big screen

Jaws
or Jurassic Park. I’ve only seen them on tv screens and I feel like they would be so much better on the big screen
I saw JP in theaters when they re-released it in 3D back at the start of the 3D craze post Avatar. Don't remember much about the conversion, though.

Day 6 - Comfort movies are always comedies. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a very good one to watch. I don't know if there's anything in that movie that could worsen your sadness.

Also, Life of Brian has this scene:

How can you not feel better after watching that?

Just maybe don't watch Meaning of Life...

Sadly I have no mind-bendingly insightful opinions to offer, just some slapdash opinions from an idiot :)

A Film You Think is Underrated

I don't really have good answers for this one, I could throw out films like Traitor, Deja Vu or Inside Man, which I think were great films and I never heard much about, but do I know they're underrated? Not really. Do I know others think they're great? Not really. I could also offer The History Boys, I love that film, or My Name is Khan, Namesake, One Life, or The Wind the Shakes the Barley. All films I enjoy that aren't super popular, but I've no idea if they're technically underrated or not. So :shrug

A Film You Put On When You Feel Sad

I tend not to watch movies when I'm down, I go to music, but if I do watch something, it's usually familiar and usually light-hearted like a Robin Hood Men in Tights or an Office Space type of film.

A Film You Would Love to See on a Big Screen

Hmm. Kung Fury? ;)

A Film You Would Love to See on a Big Screen

I already missed out because I was sick last Christmas break when I planned to see it, but Godzilla Minus One. It's such a great movie, and would have been a really fun watch in theaters.

But the real thing would have being in the screenings of the first 2 Star Wars, full of hype, excitement, and seeing the reveals of the story for the first time with a packed crowd. I'm sure its nostalgia for a time past, but being there for those two must be similar to when the Beatles first played on TV. Iconic. All I can think of is the awe of the Death Star air battle in the first one, and the reactions of Vader being Luke's father.

I honestly didn't expect anyone else to say this one.

Now I have to think of a new one :link

Day 7, Film I would love to see on big screen: Boondock Saints. This is one of my all-time favourites. Critical bust but cult classic. Never was able to see it in theatres since it wasn't available, so would love to be able to see it now.
In college we were playing Kings while this was on. Someone had a chance to make a rule, and we had to drink every time they said fuck in the hotel scene. We had to stop that rule

Underrated movie: Dunno if it counts as underrated, but I don't hear it mentioned that often, so I'll say Stardust. Good humor, great cast and all in all a funny movie!

Movie I put on when sad: As been said before, comedies are always a go to here. Mel Brooks, Monty Python and others always work.

Movie I wish I could see on the big screen: Being a huge Star Wars fan, I gotta say any of the films from the OT. I'd love to see a screening of them with a live orchestra!

First movie in cinema: man I'm not sure, but probably Toy Story. If not, then either Aladdin or Hunchback of Notre Dame for sure. I remember seeing those in theatre.

Watched over and over as a child: The Fox and the Hound. Watched that movie a TON as a kid. Also, Land Before Time. I must've watched it like 5 or 6 times, maybe more. Loved that film. Never look up what happened to Ducky's voice actor 😢

Film that made you laugh out loud: different films for different eras of my life. Austin Powers, Superbad, and Nacho Libre come to mind. The scene where Ignacio serves lunch at the monastery cracked me up so much when me and a friend over analyzed it.

A film that starts with "The": The Jungle Book, only because it came up in convo with my parents earlier today

Underrated film: I Care A Lot was a great film. I thought the dialogue was good, the plot was interesting and driven, and the acting was excellent. Nacho Libre is also my favorite underrated dumb comedy movie, even though the second half lags a bit.

I'll do the rest later

ok i just wreaked (wruck?) havoc on the 30 days of games thread so lemme do my dark deeds here now

1. first film i saw at the cinema. ok so i honestly have weird memories of seeing Terminator 2: Judgment Day at way too young an age to the point where i thought the T-1000 was gonna kill my dad. the baffling thing is that movie came out before i was born. my mom apparently saw it while she was pregnant with me? but also maybe i just caught it on TNT as like a 3 year old or something. the first movie i remember seeing in theaters is the timeless Pokémon: The First Movie. shouts out to my dad for taking me to the 10 PM showing the day it came out. years later i asked him what he thought of the movie and he said it was the stupidest thing he had ever seen. love you dad

2. film i watched over and over as a child. i have a rotation for this actually. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. Space Jam. Balto. Air Bud. aaaaaaand Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. that last one doesn't hold as much nostalgia anymore lol

3. film that made me laugh out loud. gonna go with The People's Joker for this one. if you haven't heard of it, it's an unauthorized pastiche of the joker movie made by and starring a trans woman. i'm not gonna give too much away because it's worth a watch no matter who you are but my favorite character is Suicide Cop

4. film that starts with The. gonna go with an underrated animated classic that helped birth studio ghibli: The Last Unicorn

5. LOL i answered #4 that way before realizing the very next question is a movie i think is underrated. fuck everybody who hates on the original Super Mario Bros. movie. it is a perfectly fine movie as is and the fanmade recut fixes so many problems and adds so much more. sure everybody who worked on it had a miserable time and most of the actors were drunk on set but that just makes it all the more magic.

6. a film that i put on when i feel sad. i don't really have an answer for this one because movies aren't my go-to media when i'm feeling down. i guess i'll answer for "movie that always puts me in a good mood no matter what" and that answer would be Hackers

7. film that i would love to see on the big screen. i recently saw Alien for the first time and i know that movie slays on the big screen. show me those retro futurist spaceship interiors in glorious hd.

8. favorite film set in space. lol yet again. i was never really much of a space movie person. i didn't see a star wars until my 20s, haven't seen any of the star treks. i'm gonna go with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy since even if it was kinda mid as a movie that still started my love affair with the h2g2 books

I loved the 2004 Hitchhiker's Guide, even if the fans of the book and TV series decry it. Sure, it's got it's fair share of problems, like Zooey being cast as a character that she can't properly portray (she seemed super bored throughout, no chemistry with Freeman), but the rest of the cast is fine, and there's a lot of fun to be had.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

i think the key problem with it was that douglas adams died halfway through finishing the screenplay so they had to kind of piecemeal the rest of it. zooey was fine as trillian but i do think there were more fitting actresses for that role. yasiin bey (née mos def) was inspired as ford prefect. and sam rockwell ate zaphod beeblebrox right up

Film that Made you Laugh out Loud

Tropic Thunder (borat is a close a second)

Also love all the love Rescuers down under is getting
Holy shit, I forgot how much the fight scene in Borat made me laugh. I saw it in the theatres with two friends and we were all pretty much rolling on the floor at that scene.

My friend brought his GF in hopes of getting some tongue-slapping action, but he spent the entire movie laughing so much he could only get himself a quick kiss at the end
