Industry the Game Awards 2024

Just caught up with the announcements. It was a decent show, although I don't know what the holy shit announcements were.

The Witcher 4 will be good but I personally just don't get too excited about CGI trailers, even as the text implies a future Nvidia GPU could render this in realtime.

Elden Ring Nightreign looked hot even as I don't have much interest in the genre.

Nice to see the return of Turok, Okami, Ominusha and Fumito Ueda games, and the cat simulation genre staying as healthy as ever.

I'm standing by my criticism of The Outer Worlds, but there's a lot of potential there for the sequel. The more it makes me forget Starfield, the merrier.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is my most anticipated game of 2015 2025. Did they fall out of a time warp? Still, if it catches the vibe of those Lord of the Rings games then who cares?

Borderlands 4 continues to exist.

Will Mafia The Old Country be the game that gets me into that series? It's basically #1 in the list of game series that I should enjoy but don't. As much as I don't care for the CG trailers as per above I think the return to Sicily looks interesting.

You may as well inject Intergalactic into my veins. The fact that she's flying a Porsche is beautifully ridiculous.

The same people that made GunZ: The Duel, btw.

...but now they only make mobile games...

I'm really excited about the new Naughty Dog IP. They've been on fire with everything related to TLOU, and even if the game does not reach the same heights, their constant attention to detail means that it should be very fun to play. I don't think this will be a Starfield situation.

Agreed, it gave me the recent Guardians of the Galaxy game vibes, (which was a great game) but I am hoping Naughty Dog has tricks up their sleeves to make it fun. I don't question their ability to make it dramatic and memorable.

Split Fiction looks great! Played It Takes Two with my middle child and we loved it!

Yeah, this is the one I'm most excited for in 2025 specifically. My 11 year old has gotten into games recently and now is able to manipulate the controller in a way that playing games that require skill is a thing. She is going to love this one, and I can't wait to play it.

upon rewatching I definitely need to see more from Borderlands 4. like it doesn’t look awful but idk I’m not necessarily excited for it either.

and I just don’t have the nostalgia that other people have for ninja gaiden or virtua fighter or Turok or Okami

I think the problem with phrasing it the way that he did is that we already knew The Witcher 4 was coming and we already knew Naughty Dog had a new IP coming (I am assuming those were the big ones). We didn't know they'd be revealed at this show though.

the thing that excites me for virtua fighter is that rgg studio (yakuza) is working on it and they clearly have so much love for it given that the only virtua fighter i've played has been via the arcades in yakuza games. they will do it and do it right and i will absolutely want to check it out

Oh yeah! I forgot that they also announced a new Yakuza game IP that looks like Yakuza. I dont hate it.

Reiterating all the love for Balatro. Between it and Metaphor, they both swept the most awards at three each. Astro Boy though won the big one did only snag two total.

I might look at Borderlands 4. Out of all the BL games, I think I played 3 the least. Not that it was bad, just that interest dropped for ye old bulletsponge game.

What else... Witcher was big, but I never finished 3 or anything so meh. Okami isn't my cup of tea, but I can feel the hype. Onimusha might be fun. Oh, the Naughty Dog game looks interesting.

I do want to mention the show itself. It was pretty darn good and enjoyable when you weren't watching Fortnite ads or ads for merge games. Imagine Muppets stealing the show with the best jokes over all the monologues.

I had totally forgotten about this so it was a wonderful surprise for me.

Finally another RGG protagonist that isn't afraid of dropping bodies.

I'm interested to see how far removed from Yakuza it will be story telling wise. Mechanically it looked basically the same in the trailer. That's not necessarily bad, but also could have something... new? Other than bashing and slicing heads. But who knows. We got time in between now and release.

Definitely. Gaming is one of the strangest hobbies because everyone has a backlog a mile long, yet is starved for new games somehow. I try (and fail) to not spend too much time thinking about what every studio is doing and when stuff is coming out because it's very likely that the two bigger announcements aren't coming in 2025 anyways, and yet there will still be tons of cool stuff to play next year.

But that said, once in a while, someone on Reddit summarizes what each studio is doing, and I like to read it out of curiosity.

This sounds like they just took every thing from every other game and added it to theirs.
Yep, exactly. I'm so tired of roguelite everything. It feels like such a cheap way to pad out a game's length.

But then, I love everything FromSoft craps out, so I'll probably enjoy this too. But like Vash said, interest fading rapidly.

If you had told me at this time yesterday that a new ER game would be announced and it wouldn't even be in my top 3 announcements, I'd have been shocked.

Witcher 4, Shadow Labyrinth, and Split Fiction are all on my "must try" list though.

My top 3 would be

Witcher 4
Project Century
Intergalactic

Might see about hunting down a copy of Okami HD after seeing some of y'all so excited for a sequel
Intergalatic calling out to me.

I've read Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are doing the score, so that should BANG.

And the Sony sound system, Adidas shoes, and Porsche SPACESHIP popped me.

YES DO IT.

Also, power through the first three hours. It starts off weird and confusing and alien, which can be a bit off-putting, because it's unlike any other game, but by the time you get to the forest, you should be getting the hang of what's going on.

My top 3 are:
Okami 2, Split Fiction, Intergalactic

Do you think they will include Beastie Boys Intergalactic on the soundtrack for Intergalactic, or is that too on the nose?

Because I would love to be kickin it in my Porsche spaceship to some Beastie Boys

Exclusives? Without question a bad thing for gamers
Mostly, yeah, but exclusives do mean gaming experiences custom-tailored to the hardware in question, so the end result usually means better performance, and occasionally unique mechanics. I don't know if that's a strong enough argument in favor of exclusives, but Elder Scrolls games focussing more on console audiences led to their casualization in some ways.

I think we're past that mostly, most hardware is very similar in terms of what it can do. Motion controls are gone for the most part.

Maybe a little bit, I think Oblivion was still a lot of fun, the leveling and scaling was an issue, but they are definitely going for the casual crowd to increase sales, but no reason Fallout 4 had to be that dumbed down for consoles, they went more action and less rpg because that is what is popular no matter the system. It isnt that console cant handle it, just want more mass appeal, which may be what you mean and not so much the hardware, which if so fair.

Would losing exclusives mean that all the console companies will stop subsidizing their console prices as there's less "incentives" to buy it now?

Would that bring an era of $600+ basic console pricing?
