I don't understand this game. I really don't understand how it can be nominated for GOTY. It just seems like solo poker, with added flair? How is that GOTY? Idk, can someone explain it to me?
so i have 142 hours and counting in balatro. it is a deckbuilding roguelike in the vein of stuff like slay the spire, inscryption, and the like, except that your starting deck is a traditional 52-card deck of playing cards. you draw hands of eight cards by default and are tasked with forming traditional poker hands. you go up against "blinds" which require you to earn a certain amount of chips with a limited amount of hands and discards. harder-to-form hands offer more chips and higher multipliers. for instance a two pair is 20 chips with an x2 multiplier. if the pair is two jacks and two 8s, each of the jacks is 10 additional chips, each of the 8s is 8, so 56x2=112 chips for that hand.
so where do the 150 jokers come into play? each joker is unique and confers additional benefits, usually more multipliers but not always. there's a joker that offers an additional x3 multiplier if you have one of each suit in your hand. there's one that copies the agility of the joker to the right of it. (by default you can have up to 5 jokers at a time) there's one that grants you 250 chips per hand but reduces your hand size by 2 cards. there's a lot of mechanical give-and-take, a lot of risk/reward, and even on lower difficulty settings you've gotta be real smart/lucky to succeed because the blinds eventually crawl into the hundreds of thousands.
not to mention the other cards you can pick up in the shop in between rounds, like tarot cards (that augment and/or change your existing cards), planet cards (which increase the scores of individual types of hands), and spectral cards (that do crazy shit like copy one of your jokers at random while destroying your jokers or changing all of the cards in your hand to the same rank but permanently reducing your hand size by 1)
that's also not to mention the different decks that have different rules that go along with them, the different stakes (difficulties) that confer additional challenges like less discards per round or increasing the chips you need to win given rounds
that's ALSO not to mention the boss blinds that limit you by debuffing all cards of a certain suit, forcing one out of every seven cards drawn to be face down, or charging you an in-game dollar for each card you play.
so, yeah. it's a deceptive little game. it doesn't look like much but there is SO much to dig into. and there's no feeling better than getting the perfect joker combo to hit and watching your chip numbers skyrocket into the millions and even beyond. it's certainly not for everyone but it's cocaine for the people it's for. i'm pleased it made the cut as one of the GOTY nominees and i think it deserves to be there. it was and still is a phenomenon and it came from a solo dev. i want to play it so bad right now but i'm at work so i have to resort to just talking about it. i can't buy it on mobile or i may never see the light of day again.
the game i can honestly compare it best to isn't even poker, it's riichi mahjong. with a lot of bells and whistles attached
