Well it's that time of year the time of where it is determined what is the game of the year (and other categories) and there are absolutely no fights about it and everybody is civil. and also it is where Geoff Keighly has his 24 hour love fest with Kojima while Simultaneously rushing devs who are paying tribute to members of their team that passed. there will also be Trailers, announcements and all that other fun stuff tomorrow Thursday December 12th.

here's a link for what's being nominated and what category

Damn...it's looking through the nominations for these games that make me wonder when I became so detached from gaming, because I don't even recognize so many of these titles this year. Normally I at least pay a little bit of attention, but nope, no clue. Ah well, perks of being broke, I guess, lol.

There's lots of rumblings and rumours of a very significant announcement coming this year.

In terms of the nominees. I haven't really played any of these games except for Astro Bot (which I really hope wins GOTY but I doubt it well). Bilatro being up for GOTY caught my attention since that game has been on my radar for a while. If Shadow of the Erdtree wins GOTY that'll be immeasurably disappointing but I'm in the camp that thinks DLC should not be eligible.

The other fascinating takeaway is that 3 of the 5 titles for players choice are gacha games. What a wild state of gaming we live in.

I never put too much stock into these types of things because somehow every game has won hundreds of awards - I know this is one of the more legitimate shows, but the same games usually end up winning. Plus, the AAA gaming scene is so small that it's really easy to figure out what the good games are in a given year. Also, I don't usually play games within their release year, so even though I've heard of a lot of this stuff, I haven't played any of it.

That said, it's always a good time of year for announcements, so I'm looking forward to whatever is announced.

Jason Schreier said that there's two holy shit announcements.

Dare I say...Half Life 3?

(nah)
You can't have rumours without HL3!

More realistically, I think one of the announcements could be FromSoft. They're overdue for a game announcement.

Could also see Naughty Dog or Santa Monica.

balatro should win GOTY. if celeste can do it so can my friend jimbo the joker. (my prediction is that it will be the elden ring dlc)

if HL3 is there i will eat my hat, which is fine because i am not currently wearing a hat and will therefore have nothing to eat

bill clinton kid feels like it happened ten thousand years ago

e3 sucked. man i miss e3

Metaphor just being nominated is a win for Atlus and turn based RPG fans everywhere. I doubt it has the legs to win (Gamespot has it as their GOTY) but it is wholly deserving.

I want Astrobot to win, though. We need more just pure fun games that don't need to make a statement, or be complicated, or be difficult so all types of gamers can play it and enjoy it.

Basically I'm just saying bring back platformers.

For the two major announcements, I want a brand new IP from Naughty Dog and a big update from Bethesda on Elder Scrolls 6.

What we probably get is a new GTA6 trailer and something from a dev I don't care about.

see the fact that it says "holy shit" announcement makes me think it has to be things we haven't seen before. unless Elder Scrolls 6 gets shadow dropped I don't think it will be that. and we know about GTA 6 already so that's not "holy shit" worthy to me

Hell yeah, brother.

I haven't played any of the GOTY contenders lel. A few of them appeal to me, but just haven't gotten around to them yet. It seems like a pretty paltry slate of offerings though, tbh. Not that any of them are bad, I assume -- just that I'd expect more.

I don't understand this game. I really don't understand how it can be nominated for GOTY. It just seems like solo poker, with added flair? How is that GOTY? Idk, can someone explain it to me?

For the big announcements, I expect nothing. Hypers gonna hype. If I'm right, now expectations dashed. If I'm wrong, I get a pleasant surprise. Win-win either way.

Which is why I hoooooope its something from Naughty Dog. TLoU isn't my cup of tea, but I recognize it's greatness. They've never disappointed me.

so i have 142 hours and counting in balatro. it is a deckbuilding roguelike in the vein of stuff like slay the spire, inscryption, and the like, except that your starting deck is a traditional 52-card deck of playing cards. you draw hands of eight cards by default and are tasked with forming traditional poker hands. you go up against "blinds" which require you to earn a certain amount of chips with a limited amount of hands and discards. harder-to-form hands offer more chips and higher multipliers. for instance a two pair is 20 chips with an x2 multiplier. if the pair is two jacks and two 8s, each of the jacks is 10 additional chips, each of the 8s is 8, so 56x2=112 chips for that hand.

so where do the 150 jokers come into play? each joker is unique and confers additional benefits, usually more multipliers but not always. there's a joker that offers an additional x3 multiplier if you have one of each suit in your hand. there's one that copies the agility of the joker to the right of it. (by default you can have up to 5 jokers at a time) there's one that grants you 250 chips per hand but reduces your hand size by 2 cards. there's a lot of mechanical give-and-take, a lot of risk/reward, and even on lower difficulty settings you've gotta be real smart/lucky to succeed because the blinds eventually crawl into the hundreds of thousands.

not to mention the other cards you can pick up in the shop in between rounds, like tarot cards (that augment and/or change your existing cards), planet cards (which increase the scores of individual types of hands), and spectral cards (that do crazy shit like copy one of your jokers at random while destroying your jokers or changing all of the cards in your hand to the same rank but permanently reducing your hand size by 1)

that's also not to mention the different decks that have different rules that go along with them, the different stakes (difficulties) that confer additional challenges like less discards per round or increasing the chips you need to win given rounds

that's ALSO not to mention the boss blinds that limit you by debuffing all cards of a certain suit, forcing one out of every seven cards drawn to be face down, or charging you an in-game dollar for each card you play.

so, yeah. it's a deceptive little game. it doesn't look like much but there is SO much to dig into. and there's no feeling better than getting the perfect joker combo to hit and watching your chip numbers skyrocket into the millions and even beyond. it's certainly not for everyone but it's cocaine for the people it's for. i'm pleased it made the cut as one of the GOTY nominees and i think it deserves to be there. it was and still is a phenomenon and it came from a solo dev. i want to play it so bad right now but i'm at work so i have to resort to just talking about it. i can't buy it on mobile or i may never see the light of day again.

the game i can honestly compare it best to isn't even poker, it's riichi mahjong. with a lot of bells and whistles attached

Damn, that actually sounds really interesting. You did a much better job of explaining it than my ESL Saudi students 😂 I can see the appeal now for sure. Very cool that they made such a unique twist to such a well-known, classic game.

Initial thoughts:

- Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound looks pretty fantastic, happy it's got the old school 2D feel

- I forgot Slay the Spire II early access was coming, can't wait for this

The Muppet Christmas Carol Ghost GIF by filmeditor

watched that last night.

I'm torn - on the one hand, that trailer for The Witcher 4 looked sick.

On the other hand, I spent the last hour doing a (IMO) bad quest in The Witcher 3 that was beyond painful.

The Elden Ring trailer looked amazing, but I was a bit confused at the description that was given about the type of game it will be. I still haven't played Elden Ring, but seems like I should do that to get ready for this new game.
