Here's another screenshot (lower quality) that shows an enemy wizard in it (as well as a dead one off to the left, and another one in the background who is casting lightning) and a dragon on the right:

They player is casting meteor shower, which is a great way to kill other wizards as well as most monsters, unless they use the reflect spell to bounce it back at you.

Ding Ding! You don't see your own carpet (at least in the original version), but you do see others wizards on carpets when they're also in the world with you.

The DOS mode version of the game is the best version of the game.

Never played it, actually thought it was a Saturn only game for a long time

The monster in the picture is called a "worm" in the game. It's only one of many types of monsters you encounter (one of the easiest ones). There's another that looks just like it except it flies and is called a dragon.

Other monsters look more like what they're meant to be. Bees and birds are also common in the early levels. Kraken and Griffins show up a few levels in, and eventually things like Wyverns show up (and look more like what you'd imagine vs. what this game uses as Dragons, which I guess would be more akin to the east asian style of dragon)
I called them worms first and AI was just as helpful

Look it up when you get a chance. It plays like a first person shooter in helicopter mode.

Nope you got it, it was Phantasia. Was wondering if it would be too easy
Whoops. I don't remember that boss at all, but I played it like 20 years ago. I think I never finished it, actually. I remember really enjoying the patched translated SNES version I played, and got VERY far. But when I tried playing the GBA version like 7 or 8 years later, I couldn't get into it at all. The combat didn't seem to make sense -- my character kept dashing forward and back rather than moving where I wanted him to. IDK, stopped playing very early.

I was just watching a video on it. It's very interesting. I don't know if I'll be playing DOS games anytime soon, but I would like to give it a whirl. It has great reviews!

I've heard a bit about it. I'm not usually a fan of fighting games, but everything I've read about these two games makes me want to try them.
They're very different in that there's no health bars. You can die with a single well placed hit. You can also break limbs and the other player is incapacitated for the remainder of the fight (and can even concede, at which point you can choose to let it end or execute them)

I think that system is exactly WHY I'd like it. No long, drawn-out fights. Attacks do meaningful damage that has lasting effects. No obtuse combo memorization. Just you, a dude, a sword. Badass.

You can also fight with a sledgehammer if you want. That one is great for breaking limbs but hard to get insta kills. It's also slow.

There's also a couple of stages where you can modify the surrounding a bit. One is a bamboo forest and if you attack with your sword you cut the stalks down.

But yeah there needs to be another game like it for sure.

I think Nidhogg 1 and 2 are 2D fighters with the same sort of game design. I've never played them, but they seem cool.
