TV Shows Wheel of Time tv show

With Season 2 on the horizon (September 1st), I’d figure I’d start a discussion to see who’s interested in it so far and so I can have people to talk to about it once the new episodes start airing.

I’ve read the books, but out of respect for anyone who hasn’t yet but is enjoying the show, I’ll try to avoid spoilers and ask that others do the same (are spoiler tags a thing here?)

Also, if you’re a fan of the books and HATE the show because of changes made or for whatever other reason, I totally understand, but please don’t derail the topic by going on about how terrible you think it is, like what often happens in places like Facebook.

Tl;dr version: show sucks, had some bright moments, I’m still going to watch every episode until it gets canceled or finishes.

There were some changes I’ve seen people complain about that I don’t mind, and some that I couldn’t stand. Biggest issues I had were with one character’s backstory in episode 1, and the climactic battle plus scene with the big bad in the last episode. Pretty much everything else in between I could tolerate or understand why those changes were made

I am a huge fan of the books and was hyped as fuck for the show when I just learned about it being filmed, and then somehow ended up not watching a single episode, still. I guess once it came out the immediate disappointment expressed by many WOT fans held me back.

I'll make a point of finally watching the first season before September though.

I like how they portray the characters. The casting for Perrin and Rand specifically. It's a fun show to watch and because I don't remember all the details of the first books anymore I'm not taken aback buy their creative changes.

I'm also not too concerned with it being good or bad. It's cool that they are making it and it's cool seeing an interpretation of it on screen.

I get the same vibe from the new LOTR show but I stopped watching that. I like the WoT one better. I heard they recast Mat and I'm curious to see how that goes.

I haven't read the books yet, but they're in my queue on my kindle. I watched the first season and enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the next season.

This is a similar path I took with both A Song of Ice and Fire and The Witcher, where I watched season 1, then bought all the books, and then read them (I need to get through a bit of a backlog at this point though).

Pretty much how I feel too. And I’ve learned recently that Mat’s actor quit while they were still making the show, so that explains why he made a sudden exit the way he did even though that didn’t happen in the books.

That’s how I was with the Sword of Truth series. Fans HATE the show, but I watched Legend of the Seeker before reading the books so I love both.

Can't hate the show version of it for being different than the books if you read the books after!

(though I did read all of the GoT books by the midway point of season 2 and got to hate it all there...and I read the first Witcher book before finishing season 1 actually)

I just think of the show as a completely different turning of the wheel and I have no problems with it. Eager for season 2! I also highly recommend the audiobooks for anyone who likes that medium. The performers are incredible.

I view it similar to how I view the theatrical release of LotR: It isn't faithful to the books in some places but it's decent in its own right. And I understand some of those choices were because TWoT has a massive ensemble cast. I like the castings for the Ta'veren but wish Mat's actor hadn't noped out. We'll have to see how Season 2 goes.

Really enjoyed it and hyped for season 2. Trailer tomorrow

That said, there were some things I didn’t agree with. The cold open of the pilot didn’t work for me. The fridge confused me as totally unnecessary. And they did Abel a real bad turn. Other things I understand were down to pacing or difficulties due to covid restrictions. Winternight was awesome.

I’m rewatching s1 weekly to lead in to season 2. Just watched the pilot a few days ago. Might post again after season 2.

I can tell you that book 2 was better than book 1, and that books 3 through 5 are really good! Then the series hits kind of a lull (just my opinion) until the last two or three books which are amazing.

So if you liked season 1 then I’m thinking you’re probably sure to like the next few seasons as well.

I could summarize what’s happening in the trailer but not sure if that would make it better for you or not.

If you do summarize, please spoiler. I still haven't gotten to reading yet, and I'd rather know as little about it as possible. Having dinner someone who has read it explain it could offer too much clarity for what I want lol.

@Mark he has a point. @Ant Ass Tablets name should be Ants!’s Ass Tablet or Ants!’ Ass Tablet

The grammar for this is killing me, so that’s great. It’s almost as unnerving as seeing his username in all lowercase.

Good to know! How do you do spoiler tags, just in case they’re needed?

Also… in brackets, you’d just type “spoiler” followed by the usual closing “/spoiler” at the end in brackets.

Also, I have no idea what this means or might hint at but the first three episode titles in the group being launched are:

A Taste of Solitude
Strangers and Friends
What Might Be

Made it about 20 minutes into episode 1… interesting choice for the sniffer but confused about one thing

did Perrin see a vision of the violence that happened the way Hurin would, or was the the wolves sending him images like they would in the books? I’m lea I g towards the latter, because right after Perrin saw it, Elyas commented and explained it to everyone

I expect to have this clarified later this episode or shortly thereafter, but I’m going to bed instead of finishing because my youngest is still refusing to sleep and we’ve spent more time trying to get her to stay in bed than we have watching

I was going to disagree with her about Logain getting no focus in the books but I don’t know how to do that without it being at least kind of a spoiler. He is definitely a great character though, in the books and on the show. In fact I love the actor they chose and how he’s portrayed on the show.
He has almost no screen time until book 3, then almost nothing until much later in the series, then disappears again until the last few books where his role was probably given to another character

This is more what she was getting at I think, the whole at this stage of the books thing.

Pretty much. He does go away for a while but becomes more important later. I consider him more of a middling character, no where near being a main character but still more than a minor side character.

See and those two are my favourite characters.

I know shows are made to root for the protagonist(s) but I am just fascinated by certain types of characters. Same thing happened for me with GoT.

Got it! Apparently the Logain actor is quite popular in his home country.
Did you not watch Money Heist / La Casa de Papel? Alvaro Morte was one of the main characters, and sublime.

It does look like they might be merging Logain with another character, if Rand is going to him for tips on channelling. And if that is the case, I’m not sure I’m happy with long term implications. Logain is reasonably important in the later parts of the plot, but again due to changes they seem to be making regarding certain stone discs, that might differ in the show.

On Uno, I think Masema would have been better.

Loving the stylistic representations on Rand’s madness. Quick changing off-kilter edits is working for me.

The accepted test was perfect.

Did they say Cairhien has a Queen? That’s interesting.

Rand’s coat - give him a certain sword (which as much as this is covering a good chunk of book 3 I’m not expecting to see this season) and you’ve got the Tor cover of A Memory of Light.

I have more thoughts which I may post later. Ep 3 is best I think so far though.

I get what you mean. I do like Asmodeon and Masema so it would suck to not see those characters, but I get it. They’re condensing 14 phone books into 8 television seasons with 8 episodes apiece, and the source material quite literally had over one thousand named characters. So as long as the mergers make sense, I’m on board with it.

One rumor I heard is that they’re going to give Elaida’s role to Liandrin, which does sort of make sense, they’re both very unlikable Red Ajah, but there’s just one character difference between them that makes me think it’s a problematic merger if it’s true.
Talking about Liandrin being darkfriend and Elaida is just arrogant and incompetent.

Hey look, I figured out spoilers!! TD you in particular shouldn’t click it because you haven’t read the books and it’s a doozy of a spoiler if they do it for the show.
