Oh, damn. That's both surprising and not. Unexpected, I guess is the word I'm looking for.

I know he hadn't been in good health for a while, but still seems to come out of nowhere. He was a great actor in a lot of iconic roles.

I feel like pneumonia is an incredibly common disease that people die from that is both treatable and easily avoidable.
It is, but people are commonly made more vulnerable to pneumonia due to other conditions, or the treatment from other conditions. I strongly suspect that either his treatments for or the general wear and tear on his body from his cancer has played a significant role in this. My mother has had cancer twice and has now been cancer free for quite some time, but has been left with significant side effects from her treatment, and it is obvious that she takes much longer to shake off even minor bugs and ailments compared to others. We were actually talking about Val Kilmer a couple of days ago, and she made the point that when she dies it's almost inevitable that whatever the cause of death is, the cancer treatment will have impaired her ability to resist or recover from it.

There was a time when I'd think that someone who dies at 65 has had a long life, but I absolutely do not think that now. A real shame.

For anyone who is a fan of movies like Airplane! and The Naked Gun and hasn't seen Top Secret!, go watch it and enjoy Val Kilmer's first film role.
I need to see that now.

As someone who very nearly died from pneumonia, I can tell you from experience that that motherfucker can and DOES creep up on you. I had TRIPLE pneumonia. And even though I basically couldn't breath, it wasn't until I was literally dragged to my doctor because I fell to one knee at home and my wife said "okay something is DEFINITELY wrong" and forced me to go. And even then, it wasn't until I collapsed at the doctor where they called 911 to get me to a hospital.

In the ER the did an xray they had to bring to the room because I was immobile. And the ER tech bug eyed and called the doctor in. To which HE bug eyed and said "We're getting you to the OR immediately." At which point I passed out again and woke up in ICU a few hours later and had the story told to me.

I was VERY lucky to have survived. And it tried its damndest to kill me a few more times over the next 3 weeks I was hospitalized.

So, I think Jamie is right in that other things contributed, but do not make the mistake of thinking pneumonia on its own isn't dangerous as fuck, and often unavoidable and even with treatment can kill you.

That sounds nearly identical to the two others I knew that had pneumonia around our age and younger. One was mid-tire change at his job and just fell out because he lost his breath when hoisting the tire up, and the other was in the shower and the steam made him realize something was wrong. Both knew that they were sick, wrote it off as a chest cold, and got the shit smacked out of them by debilitating symptoms out of nowhere.

Just in case, I didn't intend to suggest that pneumonia wasn't dangerous. I was just making an observation.

No I understand. I just wanted to make a comment based on experience that underlying illness isn’t the only time pneumonia is dangerous. It just makes it more deadly. I fear pneumonia and no longer take for granted anything as “just a cold” or upper respiratory infection anymore. I do also have the pneumonia vaccine to assist. It’s no joke.

One of my biggest fears is drowning. And pneumonia simulates that.

Pneumonia is insidious and you don’t realize how bad it is until it is
100% this. So so much this.
