Oh, damn. That's both surprising and not. Unexpected, I guess is the word I'm looking for.

I know he hadn't been in good health for a while, but still seems to come out of nowhere. He was a great actor in a lot of iconic roles.

I feel like pneumonia is an incredibly common disease that people die from that is both treatable and easily avoidable.
It is, but people are commonly made more vulnerable to pneumonia due to other conditions, or the treatment from other conditions. I strongly suspect that either his treatments for or the general wear and tear on his body from his cancer has played a significant role in this. My mother has had cancer twice and has now been cancer free for quite some time, but has been left with significant side effects from her treatment, and it is obvious that she takes much longer to shake off even minor bugs and ailments compared to others. We were actually talking about Val Kilmer a couple of days ago, and she made the point that when she dies it's almost inevitable that whatever the cause of death is, the cancer treatment will have impaired her ability to resist or recover from it.

There was a time when I'd think that someone who dies at 65 has had a long life, but I absolutely do not think that now. A real shame.
