All this talk of Mass Effect romance really makes me feel like I should play it...

but realistically I'll never have the time
The ending really did hurt the series as a whole. And the gameplay of the first is... not great. They improve dramatically in 2 and 3.

ME2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Right up there with FF10, FF7, Witcher 3 and Elden Ring. Actually, probably ahead of all but 10.

You know - you'd think with me being an RPG fan those would be up there with my favourites of all time too but uh... they're just kinda not?

But I have shit taste in games so what do I know?
Hahaha. There's not been another series that crossed nearly a decade where your decisions had lasting impacts on the world (until literally the last moment...). I just loved that, the characters, the quests, the world, the story... all of it was so good to me.

See I only ever played ME3 on PS3. The concept of lasting decisions sounds great on paper but modern me would just end up getting disengaged after an inevitable break in between. I'm terrible at story-heavy long games now. Like I can appreciate them but just... I don't have the time or energy for that commitment.

That and long story-based games. Just can't do it. Like on paper I should love Persona and I definitely would but I don't think I'd finish it and it'd go the way of Dragon Quest XI.
Completely understand. And it's easier to REPLAY than when it first came out. Waiting 3-4 years between was tough. But again, the payoff is real.

Like deciding to let Kaiden or Ashley die on Virmire has impacts, not just on the rest of ME1, but in ME2 when you meet the survivor and they still harbor resentment that the other is dead, and again in ME3 when the survivor is a party member again.

No love for Miranda?

I do love me some Miranda, reminds of Elizabeth Hurley for some reason

I trust Bioware. I don't trust EA. Bioware makes good games. As does Respawn. EA holds them both back as they do ALL their franchises.

Well I also think a lot of the Bioware talent who was around left too

Nah, she's literally artificial. Bioengineered to be "perfect" and was a bitch.

I do like a woman who can put me in my place

But like pretty much all characters, great story arcs. My god the story arcs.

I'M STILL NOT OK, GUYS!

SOMEONE ELSE MAY HAVE GOTTEN IT WRONG!

**Cries**

They really all did have pretty good arcs, even Jacob who wasnt that interesting had good side quest

Piros the Third (.hack// & .hack//G.U.)
The character himself? Idiot. Honestly kind of forgettable. But he gets his own theme song because he's someone's self-insert Unga Bunga, and that theme song is fucking stupid so of course I now love both it and him. It's just how this works, don't question it.
PIROS MENTIONED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is a fun little exercise i might crank out a list of my own later

Working on my list — so far the cat from cat quest is the clear #1.

Been working a long time :p

Feel like I also need to add Nanba and Adachi from Yakuza 7, and Infinite Wealth.

Really the whole party in both those games are great and as a man who will be closer to 40 than 35 in a year, having older characters is so refreshing!

Rome wasn’t built in a calendar year.

Don't think I could even name 25 RPG characters off the top of my head but they're probably all or mostly going to be some of the main characters or villains from my favorite RPGs generally. So I'd say these were some characters I really like:

These are NOT ordered.

1. Jeff (Earthbound)
2. Red (Pokemon)
3. Robo (Chrono Trigger)
4. Magus (Chrono Trigger)
5. Dream Man/Riketz (Jade Cocoon)
6. Setzer Gabbiani (Final Fantasy VI)
7. Balthier (Final Fantasy XII)
8. Ramza (Final Fantasy Tactics)
9. Delita (Final Fantasy Tactics)
10. Gafgarion (Final Fantasy Tactics)
11. Cidolfus Orlandeau (Final Fantasy Tactics)
12. Ringabel (Bravely Default)
13. Demi-Fiend (Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne)
14. Jack Frost (Shin Megami Tensei franchise)
15. YHVH (Shin Megami Tensei franchise; yes, one of my favorite RPG characters is God himself)
16. Thoronir (Elder Scrolls Oblivion)
17. Sheogorath (Elder Scrolls Oblivion)
18. The Fable II Guy (Fable II)
19. Geno (Super Mario RPG)
20. Klaus (Xenoblade Chronicles)
21. Tubba Blubba (Paper Mario 64)
22. Doopliss (Paper Mario TTYD)
23. Canopus (Tactics Ogre)
24. Ashley Riot (Vagrant Story)
25. Sydney (Vagrant Story)

This definitely became more of an exercise in "What RPG characters do I remember?" Not that I don't love RPG games, but I definitely haven't played a whole lot of them since my teenage years, and those are some foggy-ass memories at this point.

In no particular order, more so by games I could remember;
  1. Deckard Cain (Diablo II)
  2. Diablo (Diablo II)
  3. Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher)
  4. Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher)
  5. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)
  6. Tifa (Final Fantasy VII)
  7. Red XIII (Final Fantasy VII)
  8. Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)
  9. Reno (Final Fantasy VII)
  10. Rude (Final Fantasy VII)
  11. Lulu (Final Fantasy X)
  12. Auron (Final Fantasy X)
  13. Cidolfus Telamon (Final Fantasy XVI)
  14. Clive Rosfield (Final Fantasy XVI)
  15. Link (Zelda)
  16. Ganondorf (Zelda)
  17. Midna (Zelda: Twilight Princess)
  18. Hancock (Fallout 4)
  19. Dogmeat (Fallout 4)
  20. Nick Valentine (Fallout 4)
  21. Sheogorath (Oblivion)
  22. Aela the Huntress (Skyrim)
  23. Kain (Blood Omen)
  24. JC Denton (Deus Ex)
  25. Deekin Scalesinger (Neverwinter Nights 2)
FFVII certainly seems to top my list of shit I remember, and I did always find The Turks cool (probably why I started a C&C clan around them back in the day.)

Is it Heismay? He's my favorite so far. I just got to Brilehaven.

Its 100% Heismay

I dont dislike Heismay, but not gonna be one of my all time favorites. He might be the best of the ones I've met so far, but overall I find the cast very underwhelming. There isnt a character I hate, but none that really stand out. I thought I was going to like Alonzo more. Maybe Brigitta is my favorite

Yeah, but come back and check in with me when the little albino dodge king carries you through the third act.

YOU THINK YOURSELF EQUAL TO A EUGIEF'S AGILITY???

I look at lists like these more in terms of their character and personality, and less their ability in battle.

Did just get to the part where
Junah
joins the party and I may end up liking her, we'll see. I also felt the same way about Alonzo and he's just okay.

I have four of the characters in Clair Obscur

I like them, I think Sciel will personality wise be my favorite out of the bunch, but I just met her. Maelle though, holy fuck she is a power house is so broken, so if we're talking favorite characters in term of battle prowess, shes up there. I do like her character to, though not top 25 on just personality (yet)

Oh god I didn't even consider how Clair Obscur is gonna shake up my list.

oh dear
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 when I play it (and 1) need to shake up my list too

Hans Capon is fantastic and grows throughout 1, also Theresa is top tier partner material, she's braver (while still having doubt) and more gung ho than the MC Henry

The voice acting is so good in COE33, the characters feel real and distinct and Ive only spent about 9hrs with them all, also I love the MC isnt some teenager, Maelle is a teen, but the first two characters are "older", early 30s so that is refreshing, and I think Sciel is too.

I haven't posted in this thread before, here are the RPGs I've played a solid amount and enjoyed, it won't be 25 and I'm not ranking them:

- Diablo 3
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
- X-Men Legends
- D&D Heroes (Xbox)
- Fallout 3
- Fallout New Vegas
- Fallout 4
- Mass Effect

uh... I think that's it. There might be another dungeon crawler Diablo clone that I'm forgetting. Record of Lodoss War on the Dreamcast was underwhelming, though playable.
