Music Playlist Sharing

I used Winamp pretty much forever, and one of the biggest reasons why is I had a *MASSIVE* playlist that I had cultivated over like 20 years and I didn't wanna lose it. Then I found out Spotify can import old playlists. But one of the biggest catches of Winamp, as great as it was, was that obviously you couldn't really "discover" new music without downloading or buying.

When I imported it, I named it "Winamp is Dead", and I began a new playlist that was (primarily) just songs I had found after I switched. I lived in the "For You" albums, or just searching by similar artists, and this playlist so quickly became my go to whenever I couldn't pick something else to listen to.

I named it "Spotify Lives" (this is a fairly mixed genre, but I would say it leans heavily into alternative, some modern punk, and lighter hard rock)

Other playlists I've made, this one was just for shits and giggles to see if I could do it:

The Alphabet Song: (the genre in here is completely assorted, I tried to pick songs I knew, but some I couldn't find, so I just searched for any that fit the bill.)

and lastly, this one will forever cement my credentials as A: nerd, B: TV nerd, C: music nerd, and D: having way too much time on my hands as of a year or two ago. The Supernatural Definitive Playlist, every song I could find that was ever on the show, in order of the episodes they were in. (this genre leans heavily towards 70s and 80s hard rock and metal, as is the theme of the show, but there's other things mixed in )

Share yours!

What a great idea for a thread! I love knowing what playlists people make, and it's always fun to know the context. Playlists for me can sometimes act as aids for thinking (since I want to make films, the question of music is an important one) and I have lots, but I'll share the ones I think are most useful or unusual.

I'm most proud of my playlist for working:
It's mostly early/modern electronic, funk, psychedelia, bit of jazz and folk, with a bit of rock (so a significant chunk comes from the 1970s). The purpose of this playlist is to help me do creative work, and so my parameters for songs here are: they have some sort of momentum to them, which tends to mean something with a decent pace (but not too fast), and they have to inspire me, which means either positive vibes, or mystery (or both). There are exceptions that inspire for other reasons. I add to it regularly, and am currently at 39 hours.

Almost as long is my running playlist, which is almost 37 hours:
Again, driving beat, positive vibes. Lots of funk, electronic, some 90s hits (songs of my youth ;_; ), a bit of rock.

This is my altered states playlist:
Also mostly positive vibes, but with more folk. Lots of funk and electronic.

so anecdotal story, I've been a heavy music fan since my late teens, early 20s (I was a little behind the ball, I leaned into games when I was very young, not music). this might sound dumb, but it was only 5 or 6 years ago that I started noticing (more realistically APPRECIATING) how much power can behind the right music in movies and TV shows.

I "feel" a lot when I watch stuff. a big scene in an MCU movie will give me chills long after, I'll cry at a moment's notice in a movie or show I like, I get invested. then one day I was watching something and just realized 90% of what made the scene so impactful is the music behind it.

I know that's such a weird story of me "not realizing" that until I was so old, but it's mostly to say I love that if you want to make films, the key to making them more engaging is the right music.

I can't run any more, two herniated discs and now TWO bad knees, but I loved running, and I love playlists that feel like running music. (I listen to a couple of Spotify Made running/work out playlists as like... daily drivers, whenever I need motivation to do something). so I will definitely be checking this out.

electronic doesn't *always* do it for me, there's a few artists that I enjoy, but on the whole "not my genre", but I am very curious to see which ones you might've chosen for this.

I'm sorry about your knees and back! And I totally know what you mean about using music for motivation. I feel like there's a lot to be said for triggering your body into telling your mind that it's Time To Get Shit Done.

And about music in films: yeah, it's crazy, isn't it? I work as an editor, and wow – what you make of a video depends *so* much on what it sounds like. To be honest with you, I don't think I really grokked it myself into relatively recently, despite having worked in media for years. It sounds like the score written for the film has somewhat of an impact on you specifically; do you think that soundtracks where the music wasn't written for the film affect you as much?

nope, I like both, as long as it's chosen well.

good example: Guardians of the Galaxy is primarily third party licensed music, but every song is chosen so carefully for the scene.

I'm as big a fan of big scores, and John Williams, and Star Wars and Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones will always have amazingly recognizable and impactful music, but for me it's definitely not just specifically made scores, as long as it fits the theme.

Supernatural was also really good at finding the right 70s and 80s rock music to perfectly fit a scene.

@Olga I listened to the running playlist while showering and let's just say I've never showered so fast!

the few songs I've heard so far aren't totally my style, but it's a different musical experience which j always appreciate.

I only have a few select playlists. An upbeat one for when I'm trying to wake up on an open at work. A chillstep one for morning sessions at work, or just as background music if I'm doing model painting.

And then my 150hr, 2,000+ song playlist, which is what I normally slap on, and is about 10 old playlists slapped together, wearing a trench coat. It's always on shuffle, and I tend to skip past things as needed at home, media keys on my keyboard helps a lot. I've been building on it for around ten years now, and every now and again I find new music, or remember songs from the past that I liked, so it keeps growing.

From my preliminary scroll this looks awesome, I know what I will be listening to tomorrow

Oh absolutely, some times I'll just be skipping loads because I'm not feeling certain songs, or my brain wants something in particular but won't tell me what exactly. It's very rare I delete things off it, but it happens now and again.

Hope y'all have a blast with it!
