30 Days of Movies

I'm not a big movie person but this is fun. I'll start early because no one can stop me.

First movie I saw in theaters: I never really went to the movies, as I have 4 siblings and we didn't have much money, and my parents didn't watch much movies - but the first time I remember going was 1993, Jurassic Park. I begged my mom to take me for 2 weeks and because I was obsessed, she took me, and I remember covering my eyes through most of it because it was scary and loud (didn't know movie theaters played it so loud!) and then being bored by all the adults talking scenes. So I probably shouldn't have gone lol.

I must have gone to at least one movie before I was 8... but I don't remember doing that.

The main thing I remember about seeing Jurassic Park in theaters was the absolutely ungodly amount of McDonalds my mother snuck in her bag for the 5 of us that went.

Oh and the T-Rex

Yup, I remember sneaking in snacks all the time from the local pharmacy/corner store. Pack of twizzlers and a Twix bar for $1.

The T-Rex escape scene changed my life, I think. I'd never seen something so incredible before that.

I know first movie I’ve seen in the theater is not going to be accurate:

I remember hearing a story of being at ghostbusters 2 when I was 2

I have vague memories of seeing Fern Gully with my older sister when I was about 5

The first film I clearly remember seeing in theaters was Speed when I was 7. One of my closest friends at the time was allowed to invite one friend to his older brother’s sleepover, so we got to go with them to the movies

The Aristocats, Oliver & Company, Aladdin, The Lion King, so many films, lol. Also growing up my sister would force me to watch Spice World and Death Becomes Her at every damn opportunity because she was older and got to control the tv...so...those...

Day 1: The first movie I remember seeing in the theater was the first live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Weirdly enough, I have no memory of seeing the sequel in the theater, but it was the only one I owned on VHS (spoiler alert for Day 2!).

Other early theater memories include Beauty and the Beast, Batman Returns, Home Alone 2, The Sandlot, and Jurassic Park. Imagine how iconic seeing those dinosaurs on the big screen with John Williams' epic score was to seven year old me.

The movie that I watched over and over as a child would be Back to the Future.

In fact, there was a time when I was in the 4th grade that I had to spend several days in a children's hospital. One of the channels on the television there was just the Back to the Future trilogy on a loop, and since the IV in my arm made it difficult to play any of the Nintendo games in the gaming room (cool children's hospital), I pretty much sat there and watched those films over and over while I read comic books.

Yes, the thread was posted prior to the first

I waited a day so I'd be back on track!

Day 2: Movie watched over and over as a kid - Smokey and the Bandit 1 and 2

My dad loved these movies and he taped it to VHS off ABC when they played them both in a row back in 1989 so we used to fast forward over the commercials, which are fun to revisit every so often. I have 3 brothers obsessed with cars, so the movies were perfect, and because they were on broadcast TV, no swearing! So we would watch these weekly, if not twice a week.

It also introduced me to Jerry Reed at a young age. That guy was hilarious and a talented songwriter.

Day 2: A film you watched over and over as a child

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze - As mentioned in my Day 1 post, this was the only Turtles movie I had on VHS, and I watched it so many times. Naturally this makes it my favorite Turtles movie, and I can quote just about any random moment from it. They may have toned down the "violent" and "darker" aspects of the first film, but this one is funnier ("Yeah, a little too Raph!"). And there's still plenty of fun martial arts action.

Honorable mentions:

The Rescuers Down Under - I was happy to see multiple people mention this movie earlier in the thread. For some reason it was the only Disney movie I had on VHS, which is kind of random considering it was a rare (at the time) Disney sequel to get a theatrical release and came out right in the middle of the Disney Renaissance (between The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast), only to get mostly overlooked and forgotten. It seemed like no one ever talked about it when I was a kid, but it was one of my most watched movies (I've never seen the first one either). A fun adventure flick with great animation and an awesome score:

Tremors - We didn't have this movie at home, but my brother and I watched it a lot at my grandparents' house (plus it was on tv a lot throughout the 90s). My grandpa had a lot of old movies, but this was (at the time) one of the newer ones he had. Even though it is rated R for violence and language, he would watch it with us. It's a really well done homage to monster movies and has a great balance of horror elements and comedy, with the comedic aspects being my favorite parts. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward have such great comedic chemistry and timing together. My brother and I can endlessly quote this movie. There is a scene at the beginning of the movie where Val (Bacon) shakes their truck up and down to wake up Earl (Ward) who is sleeping in the bed, and Val is yelling "Stampede, Earl!" which naturally scares Earl awake. When my brother and I would sleepover at my grandparents', in the morning Grandma would tell us to go wake up Grandpa, so we would run in and start pushing up and down on the sides of the bed yelling "Stampede, Grandpa!" :D

I could probably name a couple other movies here, but I don't want this to turn into a novel screenplay.

I had the first one in VHS and watched the shit out of it too

This probably rounds out my top 5 with Cannonball Run 2 and Ernest Scared Stupid.

I liked the original, it was a great movie in itself and really set the atmosphere and darkness about the turtles, but come on, everyone knows they're fun! Donatello was out of nowhere funny in the movie, since he was always the brains in the cartoons. Michaelangelo obviously was hilarious, but Donny was a real surprise.

Day 3

Movie that made me laugh out loud: I’m not going to name a specific move, because that’s too hard. Pretty much any film by Mel Brooks or The Princess Bride will still make me laugh out loud when I watch them to this day
I'm gonna borrow this answer, because it was pretty much exactly what I was going to write!

Exactly! Most of us kids likely didn't know about the Turtles' origin in the dark and gritty comics. We were familiar with the cartoon and video games. The first movie is great, but the second is the most fun. I agree that Donny steals the show. He and Mikey kind of have this chemistry together as the genius/idiot combo that share a goofy side. While Cory Feldman voices Donatello in the first and third films, Adam Carl voices him in this one and does a great job. Carl will always be the voice of live action Donatello for me.

Makes Me Laugh Out Loud:

Gonna go with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy here. The sheer amount of gags they packed into a movie that isn't a straight-up parody like a Mel Brooks or a ZAZ is incredible and basically launched a Will Ferrell Genre that had a couple more bangers.

Also the most I've quoted a movie since I was a middle schooler basically reciting all of the Ace Ventura movies.

If I need a laugh, 60% of the time it works every time.

I've lost count of how many times me and my buddy have watched Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore or Waterboy together.

So dumb but equally hilarious.
Happy Gilmore was almost my pick for this one.

Shooter McGavin is the GOAT.

Happy Gilmore and Airplane were top contenders for me too
