Zesty whips his head around and shakes his head. He gently places one hand on his dagger at his hip. He gently makes eye contact with the merrow, awaiting indication of the creatures response.

{{I know you guys haven't really come to a consensus on what to do yet, and I'm basically waiting on one of them juicy green actions. But just to make sure you're thinking of all angles, you can still try other things, like trying to find a way to intimidate it, finding a way to use your environment, etc. It's not strictly "one and done" with things like persuasion checks, you can try the same thing again, although of course there's the chance you don't roll high enough to succeed. But that's true with anything. 
Oh, and @An Anatomically Correct Pineapple, while I was lol over the 'magic hammer creating booze' in the Inn/Tavern thread as we were getting into the vibe, I'm going to clarify early on that there's not actually any magical enchantment on the hammer Short Order carries. It's literally just a light hammer, not a magical item. Any belief that it actually acts that way will have stemmed from you and everyone around you when you start hitting fruit like Gallagher already being completely hammered.
Not to harsh your role-play, but it'd be a little too powerful for you to have some wondrous item in your pocket right off the bat.
That's not to say that it's not potentially possible to find such a hammer... I don't know of any established D&D item that would have that effect, the closest I can find is an Alchemy Jug that produces a certain amount of liquid (including alcohol) once per day. But I could be convinced to go through the effort of making a homebrew magic item with that kind of effect, it's just not going to be something you possess already.
Makes for a good reason to be going on a quest, though.}}

Our sister ship behind us has been totally spared so far. They def have the coin on board to pay your dues. They're just a little further behind us. Why don't you try them instead? They can prob even pay you the full 400 -- and you can stash some away for yourself, if you follow.

The Merrow Extortionist pauses.
He looks up at the Tiefling at the aft of the ship, hearing the threat said with a waver in the voice, but Zesty's words seem to carry more weight as he stands before the 4 sailors and the captain, who have stepped forward to form a line behind him. He begins to realize just how outnumbered he is.
He looks down at the talkative Halfling clinging to it's lower half, aghast at how quickly the small humanoid had packed some of it's kelp skirt into a small bowl and was now trying to light it. Surely this other ship can't have such lunatics on board, and hopefully hasn't already been extorted.
The Merrow levels it's eyes on the barrel that Ahms'Orreh is gently rocking like a baby. With a frustrated grunt it tips forwards and slithers from the Halfling's loose grip and rushes as quickly as a sea-creature without legs can on the deck of a ship. It grabs onto the barrel as it dives over the railing of the ship towards the crashing waves, but it's claws slip off of the wood leaving only small gouges across the XXX, as Ahms'Orreh's grip tightens with a soldier's determination to not let anyone take their alcohol.
The scaled creature yells a string of epitaths in Abyssal as it tumbles from the ship into the sea below. You see a brief green shimmer under the waves heading away behind the boat, as the creature leaves.
The captain stands back up, clutching the wheel of the ship and wiping his brow. After clearing his throat and making his best effort to seem composed, he reorients the Laden Biscuit back on it's course to Stormwreck Isle. The other sailors begin muttering amongst themselves, discussing what they'd just witnessed, as they move back towards the unsecured cargo and return to their work.
{{I'm going to try to sleep, and I'm not sure when exactly tomorrow I'll have time to get the next part of the adventure written up and posted, but I'll make my best effort to have it done promptly. You can assume that the time in between is spent continuing your journey to the island, and if you want to continue talking while on the ship, that's fine. If you for some reason come up with any actions, etc. then they'll have to wait for me to get back.}}

Ay cap, seeing as how we totally saved the day while your cowardly crew, like, shivered and shrieked, I think its only fair that you repay the sums we paid for passage on this fine watercraft. After all, we're pretty much your own hired mercenaries at this point.

Aims is aghast by the merrows puny attempt at stealing HIS barrels of rotgut. If he were holding something else he definitely would've chucked it at the thing as it was making a break for it. He quickly scans the barrel for damage and finds the claw marks. They seem to give the barrel a bit of character.
He overhears the others talking to the captain about compensation and chimes in himself.
Aims takes a deep breathe and bellows at the captain.

Critical Fail!The Captain looks down at the Halfling as he approaches on the helm. His expression hardens as the smell of patchouli and armpits hits him and he appears less than amused.

You notice the sailors who had begun to spread back around the ship nodding in agreement as their Captain bellows at Moonsprout. None of them look too impressed, either, and you can hear voices below deck as more of the crew have taken note of the commotion.

You attempt to intimidate the Captain, but he's had enough of your shit.
The Captain turns from the Halfling to the Half-Orc handling his cargo, his jaw set firmly and his knuckles turning white as he grips the smooth wooden wheel.

7 more sailors emerge from below deck, most carrying daggers or weighty clubs, but you spot a few crossbows being readied as well.

You attempt to put your mouth on the barrel and somehow drink from it despite it not being tapped at all. You find that with Ahms'Orreh being over twice your height, all you manage to taste is his crotch.

It's become markedly apparent that your party has not impressed the crew and they're now well prepared for another attempt to take their cargo, be it from Merrow or otherwise. As you close in on Stormwreck Isle, the Captain points a salt-pocked finger towards a rowboat suspended from rope over the edge of the ship and motions to those of you standing on deck.
He reaches down and grabs the Halfling by the collar of his leather shirt, trying to ignore the lack of pants.

He drops Moonsprout and wipes his hands on his jacket with a sense of urgency. The sailors part slightly so you can reach the crack-riddled rowboat, with one of them deftly cutting the rope holding it up so it falls out of sight into the water. You can just make out a makeshift dock built off the beach about a mile from the vessel.

{{Very much did not have any time to get this out earlier in the day, but it's time to wrap up the introductory encounter and get into the actual campaign. If you're really wanting to fight 7 sailors and the Captain, that's your prerogative, but I'd imagine you'll probably not make it off the ship alive. So that'd suck.
I'll leave it in your hands, but I should have a bit more time to try to work on writing up the next section in the morning.
Also side note; it's probably pretty hard to avoid given this format, but the overlap of actions is probably going to get messy going forward, unless I'm able to quickly respond to it and update the outcome. I honestly don't have a really good solution for this, considering the time differences and so on... We can either continue like this with the caveat that those acting first are going to affect the outcome of what happens before anyone else and could entirely invalidate what you're trying to do. Or you could have a little more communication amongst yourselves and take actions a little more methodically, although this hampers the personal choices someone might make and would also slow things markedly... So I think maybe just know that if someone gets a critical fail before you try whatever you were going to, the outcome might be very different.}}

I feel like I'm a bit more active than the average poster, so I'll try to take that into consideration and not hog all of the first replies for myself. I think a mix of action/discussion is fine.
Ben: first of all, you're crushing it. The writing is awesome, hilarious, engaging. I love it. I was also planning for my backstory to be that I'd snuck on the boat. Just one thing I don't understand -- Jawneh rolled high, shouldn't his action be allowed to be completed? Or did my critical fail just taint every subsequent action?
Gang + Ben: Would it be worth trying to persuade the captain that we were promised passage if we performed a song/play/entertainment or whatever? Also, should these sort of questions for the group be addressed as character dialogue, or take place in curly braces, outside of character?}}

And the DM gets to pick all that! If the captain is an actual character with stats in the book, then that could also take effect. Sometimes it just be like that. }}
{{Firstly, I vote we simply humble up and make way to the actual campaign. More shenanigans can be had there. Secondly, you can still try to do that. He's not quite yet fully at our throats so who knows. And thirdly, I'd probably like to role play with the characters if it "makes sense" for us to talk in character to discuss it. OOC can be if we pose anything to Ben for one and also if want to plan out combat or make some more abstract plan in general that... might be weird in character. At least this is how I feel.
I stayed up late. I want to type a reply to things, but I'm also tired so it shall wait till tomorrow. I do not mind if I'm written to board the boat and take off to the island. I'd just be up to shenanigans for now anyhow.

Moonsprout springs up, and in large, exaggerated motions, dusts himself off. A sly grin creeps across his face. Suffering discipline from authority figures is apparently, for him, as commonplace as a morning toke. He approaches and peers at the rowboat that the crew has let loose into the ocean has begun preparing. His grin morphs into a look of awe, and with outstretched arms he issues a loud "Woah!".
