THE STORY CONTINUES:
Having departed from Dragon's Rest for the second time, your band of adventurers slowly make their way down the mountain paths towards the shore where you first landed. The journey is uneventful and peaceful, a welcome contrast to the carnage the party has faced since arriving on the island. Songbirds flutter across the path ahead of you as they dart back and forth between bushes, hunting the insects they harbor. Your walk down to the water does not take more than a half hour however, so the ramble through nature is fleeting.

Returning to the beach where you had fought the zombies, the party find the scene just as you left it. The battered corpses of the drowned sailors lay immobile where they were slain, the putrid grey flesh not appealing to any scavengers and having been left untouched. Your group moves cautiously past the bodies, one by one each battling the anxiety that the monsters will spring up again and attack.

The five of you convene on the short wooden dock. There is an old fishing net dangling over the edge and trailing in the water, where it appears to be tangled within a clump of seaweed. Several short lengths of aging rope are knotted here and there around the thick posts, some having been cut free in haste rather than untied. A rowboat not dissimilar to the one you arrived in is tethered to the dock, and you see a pair of oars laying across the seats. The boat appears big enough for 4 medium sized passengers.

North of your position, you can see a long spur of sharp rocks jutting from the ocean waves, extending several miles out.

So... Decide on that. I'm certainly not telling you. :crossarm
((Lol, I wasn't asking you to. It was more for the party...))

((As I said before, if I come up with something for you with how it works, etc. it'll be much harder to make. Beside, I see you as having thieves' tools, but no tinker's kit. I don't see how you'd build something right here.

You could use this long-rest to roll for inspiration for some invention, and then try building it when you're not in the middle of the ocean.

Unless you've got some decent RP to explain how you're constructing X with what you've got. Then we'd see.))
((Unless it's something different...

1710294069055.png

So, if this let's me potentially invent something, I wouldn't mind a simple scope type attachment to start, something to add a small modifier to hit to maybe help with accuracy. I have ideas for effects, but not necessarily items. I'll try to find some inspiration moving forward, but anything to help with hit modification.

Maybe some sort of wrist brace because I'll eventually want a better melee weapon so something I could use for any kind of weapon would be better, but I do need your permission obviously.))

|You clamber down the slick rigging and back onto the rowboat, with Aims quickly making his way back the short distance to what passed for land at the present moment.

Hexagonal pillars of basalt pack together to form small islands of varying height. You note one with a flat plateau top it and make for a landing. It's difficult to find anywhere to moor the boat against the seaweed covered lower tiers of this rock, but eventually you manage to tether a rope and lodge it between two vertical pillars.

file-yFeAbQyhGp9bgYQv1NRaPvIN.png

There is little room to maneuver on the slick tops of each rocky trunk, and you must go single file from the boat lest you misstep and fall into the waves below. You take your time and methodically pick your way up counter-clockwise around the small island, climbing ever higher on natural stairs towards the sanctuary of the summit.

You reach the top of the outcrop around 6pm, as the sun begins to fall towards the ocean.|

((Alright, I'll let you all take a long rest yourselves on D&DB. If you can and want to adjust any of your spells/gear go ahead. If you want to try to do something additional during your rest, like come up with an artificer idea or learn how to not kill your friends, let me know.

I'll assume you pack up and get back on the boat once you're done with long rests.))

Whilst everyone is getting ready to tuck in and making plans for their watch, Aims is also looking around for some good stones to use to sharpen the edge of his axes. At worst, the edge of the basalt somewhere will suffice for him to get rid of the worse dull points while enjoying the sound of the waves crashing against the outcrop.

((@Ben - am I also able to just check to see if I come up with an idea or a blueprint for some attachment I can add to my weapon for accuracy? Just the idea, of course, because I don't have the tools.))

As the team rests for the evening, it becomes Zesty's turn for watch. The soothing sounds of the crashing waves below are rhythmic in keeping Zesty alert for danger. Zesty gently places his hand in his pocket as he lays back and stares up at the stars in the sky, each looking like a shimmering snowflake.

Suddenly, Zesty's fingers feel a small, smooth, round object. He gently grasps the object and retrieves it from it's home in his pocket. He reveals a pearl and a small smiles courses across his lips. Suddenly, Zesty shoots up and realizes the pearl would make a perfect homunculus heart!

The artificer begins to tinker with the pearl. As time progresses, Zesty gets a form to appear. A small, mechanical wolf-like creature with wings takes shape and springs to life. It hops onto Zesty's should and lightly nuzzles its creator.

It's alive!, Zesty lightly exclaims, so as to not wake the others. You shall be named Ur'kokk in loving memory of Mi'kokk. For you Aims, though I'll never admit it to your face.

He giggles lightly to himself, and returns to staring at the stars, Ur'kokk duplicating the action. Zesty begins thinking about other things he could possibly create. Mechanical wings? Spring boots? Weapon grips? Magical gloves? The endless possibilities... Suddenly a thought of Myla enters his mind and he wonders if maybe she has additional tools he could purchase from her or even ideas she may have as well.

Short begins to ponder if he's been treating his companions too much like meat bags that need to be tenderized as opposed to people who could help them stay alive. Realizing that not killing them accidentally is an important requirement to having them able to help him in return...

Aye, I think I need to see if there's something I can do about all the I've explosions I keep setting off in your faces. I'm going to consult my knowledge of the Arctic to try and change how the spell works...to make it less...explody.

Thinking into his time as an druid in the circle of the Arctic, he begins to formulate if he can cause smaller ice explosions by having it pierce more into the intended target before bursting.

I'll tell you how it's worked in the morning.

Your fingers run over the smooth gemstone, conveniently of just the right worth to hold your magic.

You channel your scientific energy into the pearl, staring at it, intent on testing observer effect in a secondary experiment. The pearl begins to float from your fingertip as it absorbs more and more of your inventive aura, rotating on a precise axis, making it appear as though the smooth sphere weren't in motion at all.

As if growing atom by atom, metallic scales and gears begin to form upon the surface of the pearl, quickly wrapping around the gem itself and creating a firm setting for it. The metallic growths continue to build themselves, with wire tendons stretching along bones of silver to find a connection point. The construct unfurls itself to show a quadrupedal form with intricate wings ending in sharp pinions that glow with a cool light that shift in the same iridescent way as the pearl.

Ur'kokk comes to life.

| You sit, idly stroking Ur'kokk while the hum of invention courses through your bones. You've had little time to think of the trinkets and gadgets that bring you such glee, and you take this chance to rest to close your eyes and wonder about what you could make work.

You hear the repeated "tunk" of rocks hitting the bottom of Moonsprout's kettle. Being cramped on top of a small pillar, the sound doesn't have far to travel, but the particular frequency makes it feel like the sound is emanating from inside your head. It briefly begins to over stimulate you, and a migraine begins to form, but a rush of inspiration pushes the discomfort away.

Ethereal Echo Emitter (EEE): The Ethereal Echo Emitter is an advanced auditory device that captures and replays sounds with ethereal clarity. It can record conversations, environmental sounds, or magical tones and play them back with perfect accuracy. Additionally, the EEE can be used to create auditory illusions or amplify the artificer's voice for communication over long distances. It is compact and easily portable.

The device, through a series of calibrating runes etched across the surface, functions by attuning to the specific frequency of Kenku spirits. These bird-like folk, cursed in life to have no voice of their own and only able to communicate by mashing together sounds they've heard from other sources, carry this trait on through death. This can be exploited and channeled by the Ethereal Echo Emitter to facilitate recording/playback.

It may also be possible to build this device into Ur'kokk.

Ohh, Ur'kokk? Is my uncle here?

Aims gets up and sees a little winged wolf thingamajig around Zesty. The little glittering shinies makes Aims pupils dilate like a little kitten playing with yarn for the first time. He goes over to give Ur'kokk a little boop hello on the snoot.

| After the chaotic events of the day before, your descent into slumber was easily achieved. The group took turns to stand watch, paranoid that the dangers of the coast would not grant them time to recoup and lick their wounds. The night air was still and quiet, the rush of the waves against the base of the cliff adding white-noise to muffle other sounds.

The sun rises on a new day, and with first light the party begin to pack up the campsite and carefully make their way back down the basalt pillars to where the boat is tethered. A short row back to the wreck of the Compass Rose, and the party is once again faced with the slimy wet gore that coats the decking of the ship.

file-Ghzyp96TYvTpsgiCy2AMGX3D-gigapixel-standard v2-2x.png

As you stand on the deck, you again note stairs leading to the upper decks at the fore (B) and aft (A) of the ship, which appear to have cabins beneath each. Four closed doors (1, 2, 3, 4) can be seen leading off of the main deck, with a large hatch in the floor (5) leading to the lower levels. A rope ladder (6) hangs down from the crow's nest and is secured to the deck at the bottom.

The ship is eerily quiet.
