THE STORY CONTINUES:
Having departed from Dragon's Rest for the second time, your band of adventurers slowly make their way down the mountain paths towards the shore where you first landed. The journey is uneventful and peaceful, a welcome contrast to the carnage the party has faced since arriving on the island. Songbirds flutter across the path ahead of you as they dart back and forth between bushes, hunting the insects they harbor. Your walk down to the water does not take more than a half hour however, so the ramble through nature is fleeting.

Returning to the beach where you had fought the zombies, the party find the scene just as you left it. The battered corpses of the drowned sailors lay immobile where they were slain, the putrid grey flesh not appealing to any scavengers and having been left untouched. Your group moves cautiously past the bodies, one by one each battling the anxiety that the monsters will spring up again and attack.

The five of you convene on the short wooden dock. There is an old fishing net dangling over the edge and trailing in the water, where it appears to be tangled within a clump of seaweed. Several short lengths of aging rope are knotted here and there around the thick posts, some having been cut free in haste rather than untied. A rowboat not dissimilar to the one you arrived in is tethered to the dock, and you see a pair of oars laying across the seats. The boat appears big enough for 4 medium sized passengers.

North of your position, you can see a long spur of sharp rocks jutting from the ocean waves, extending several miles out.

((I'd allow it if that's what you choose to try.

As I'd read it, if you deal a blow that would reduce a creature to 0 hp, you could choose to knock it out instead of deal fatal damage. This would be a choice in the "what do you want to do?" question when you defeat something.

If you do, it's reduced to 0 hp but is stable and not dying. It'll be unconscious until it regains at least 1 hit point, or X hours pass.))

((@Ben - You asshole............... lol))

Zesty walks over to the now deceased Carl.

He kneels beside the corpse, saddened after watching his child witness the death of his father. He whispers, inaudible to the rest of the party:

Damn you, Merrow... You had a chance to walk away when you had a child. Why wouldn't you have taken that opportunity? The blood on their hands (because, the only damage I did to you was emotional) will forever be stained in pain...

Zesty stands up. He speaks Elvish is still a low hushed tone.

Revar aul Adon. Va siffi.

Zesty slowly turns around and looks at the rest of his team.

He points down at Carl with his index finger and changes the pitch of his voice to something nasally:

"

Zesty walks over to Moonsprout.

Here, halfling. You need this more than I do.

Zesty gives Moonsprout his potion of healing.

Drink up everyone. Let's divide up that gold and get out of here. If that child summons other Merrows, we will be in trouble.

Aims is excited for loot!

I wonder if this harpoon thing is any good. Ill also check to see if this asshole had anything else hidden in his gills before we cut him up and have snack time.

Aims goes to grab the harpoon to inspect it and then start rummaging through Carl's remains.

Oh, dont bother giving that sippy to the halfling just yet. We can setup a nice camp fire, have a bit of a rest and eat some fried fishman. Hey dwarf! You wanna finish counting the gold? We can smash the chest into firewood and have lunch!

That... is an impressive haul. Should none of you mind, I wouldn't mind at least one of those gems. Make a fine homunculus they would. Not sure how you all would like to divvy up the rest?

Payday!

Aims goes and swipes a number of gold that his hands can carry, which happens to be 369. Nice.

I dont particularly care for gems, so i wont touch those. Its up to the rest of you to decide how to share them.

Now, who's wants what part of this feast? I'll prepare us some nice filets that we can have. I guess making a fire on the beach works too. Just give me a moment. You're going to love this tiefling!

Keep your potion. I have no want for them. And for that matter, keep your ill-gotten gains.

Moonsprout starts to tear up at the tragedy of the scene he witnessed while behind Aims' muscular rumpus.

I... I warned you about the evils of money, and you still had to go ahead and murderize the family-Merrow -- even after he offered you all a fair sum to leave him alone.

And now you've orphaned a child! And the child will probably warn all of the other Merrow about your murderous ways -- and rightly so! And THEN what? You intend to take on another two or three of these at once -- let alone a literal ARMY?

As Moonsprout wipes away the tears and snot his now-u controllable blubbering have conjured, he overhears Aims talking about how best to prepare fish fillets made of Merrow.

And now you're talking about eating a creature from the ABYSS, after giving me grief for my (mostly) harmless mushroom meals.

Well, I want no part of it. No siree. I didn't realize I was travelling with a group of common THUGS

At this, Moonsprout stomps away angrily, and exits the cave, and sits in the sun.

Wow... that guy definitely needs a fish stick. You aint you when you're hungry.

By the way, i thought about it when we were walking through this cave. I think there was a couple other turns we could've taken. Could be dead ends, could have murder mushrooms, could have more treasure. I got no clue. All I know is that I'm hungry and...

Aims chops off a meaty piece of fishman tail.

... I'm more eager to eat then spelunk for now. It'll be another 10 minute to carve enough for everyone and some for the road. Anyone want to go make the fire?

((I'm going to write this assuming we're all heading to the beach to rest up, so time it out however for RP purposes. I don't know how we'll divvy up the gold/gems yet, but I figure we can arrange that back at the beach. Just assume the gp comes from whatever cut I end up with.))

Moonsprout slapping Zesty's hand away with the health potion leaves a physical mark where the emotional one was already eating at Zesty, unbeknownst to the rest of the team. Zesty watches Aims'Orreh leaves the cave happily to the beach with chunks o'Carl, Nac in tow with the remainder of the gold and chest for firewood. Short Order follows behind.

Zesty lingers in the cave lagging shortly behind after they disappeared. He glances one last at what remains of Carl. An asshole, sure. But a father. Zesty kneels one last time at the remainder of the corpse. A piece of paper and a small pile of 100gp lay next to it. The note, folded in half, has the name "Carlson" written on it. Inside, a heartfelt note is scrawled from Zesty to the now fatherless child.

"Carlson: Nothing will return your father to these waters to be with you. For this, I am deeply ashamed. This certainly does not make up for your father's death, nor the atrocities coming after. Take comfort in knowing your father cared for you to the end."

Zesty stands and and walks to the cave entrance. One last solemn turn to the dismembered sludge of goo once known as Carl.

Zesty stops and as a tear gently rolls down his eye, he gives Carl one last one fingered salute as he walks out of the cave to the beach to join the rest.

((Dangit that's beautiful writing, mad props.))

As Nac arrives with the rest on the beach seeing the dejected halfing crying his wee heart out, Nac feels bad and walks up to Moonsprout. And in an unusual burst of emotion claps a hand on his shoulder.

... I'm sorry, lad. Sorry it had ta come ta that.. It's just when someone call me short, I lose it.. ye could say it's a big issue with me. Maybe ye can take solace in the fact tha' Carl will be the source of nutrients fer alot o' new mushrooms! Again, I'm sorry.

Nac begins punching the empty chest to break it up in smaller pieces for firewood, putting them in a pile, but keeps a piece in his hand. He goes off to the side and takes out a small dagger and starts carving the wood into a small figurine picturing a Merrow.

| The group carefully make their way out of the cavern, which is no easy task considering Moonsprout ran off without a torch and became lost for 20 minutes before finding sunlight.

Nac and Short cram as much of the gold as possible back into the small chest and carry it out of the cave. Aims takes his time butchering the thawing flesh off of the slaughtered Merrow. Zesty lags behind, remorseful over how things unfolded.

The group gather on the sandy stretch around the outside of the island. It is approximately noon, based on the position of the sun. There are a few thin strings of cloud paralleling the horizon, like wave crests frozen in the air. The water is peaceful and still, reflecting the uninterrupted sharp blue of the sky.

The atmosphere is thick among the group of unlikely traveling companions. Some ride the adrenaline of victory, with renewed confidence in their supremacy. Others silently battle an internal dichotomy, their core morals having been violated by association. The crackling of the fire underscores all of it. |

((Some of this stuff probably should have required skill checks, like smashing the chest requiring a strength check, but... it seems superfluous.

So... What're you going to do from here?

((So, a long rest is probably prudent since 3/5 of us are dangerously low health, but doing that makes it night time and probably makes these waters more perilous. We could do a short rest, heal a little, get to the next spot and possibly search and do a long rest there (provided we don't get into another Carl-like fight that would kill us). I don't remember the map or X lay out, but I know there was one in the water and another on the other side of the isles. We probably want to head to the far side of the isles, though. Everyone has a health potion as well except Moonsprout because he refused mine. So... what do we think? Short rest then sail for the next destination?

I'll look back for the map image in this thread too. Though if @Ben reposts it it MIGHT be faster.

EDIT - Should probably also decide exactly how we're dividing the loot so as to know whose inventory things are going in.))

To break the chest, it'll require a strength check.
To make a camp fire, it'll require a survival check.

Aight lads. Where's the fire?

To his surprise, there is none yet. He crosses his arms and looks at everyone disappointingly.

Lads... c'mon now. It took me a good while to get everything sorted and I don't see a fire yet. Not even the wood is set to be lit yet. Sigh... I know we're hungry and out of energy, but I'd think you could all manage to get one fire going.

((Fair enough. I do not have good strength or survival checks, so I will simply assist on both to give advantage to whichever party member has the highest of both (Aims' for Strength and Short for Survival, technically.))

Short, do you still have that map of the islands?

| You dig through pocket after picket on your various belts until you finally find and produce the map Short Order had found on the beach. You find that at some point, water had trickled into this pouch, and the map has become slightly wet.

You carefully unfold it, so as not to rip anything. Luckily the location markings have not faded, the ink proving more durable than the original map's own. The markings showing the islands have faded and the map has lost a lot of its color, now being almost transparent, with ink showing through from the rear of the map.

You use a piece of charcoal from the fire and mark the party's current location on the map.

Aims has already skewered some Carl on the sticks he made earlier. He had opened up couple of his rations again to find some jerky and vegetables to add to the skewers, and was surprised to find an herb pouch around, probably from Tarak the day before, and used that as a rub for the meats. With some fishy Carlkebobs in hand, he places them all around the campfire to slowly start roasting, making sure to turn them occasionally without burning them up completely.

It wont be too long folks! Fishy things tends to roast pretty fast. The tail pieces looked to be the juiciest, so we're eating booty today! I never thought I'd say this, but there's also some fish breast filets... Hungry stomachs don't discriminate though!

((If ya want me to roll for roasting this stuff, lemme know.))

Aims shrugs.

To each to their own. After you've lived in a battlefield for years at a time, you learn not to be stingy with what you eat. You find out that all the smaller creatures tend to have much softer and meltier meat. I'm very curious about this though as fish is usually fairly soft and falls apart easy. Man... I'm salivating already.
