Because the order listed is that the illusionist disguises before the bodyguard protects, which would indicate that the bodyguard cannot protect against the illusionist.

I'm trying to figure out if he could have been disguised and then protected in the same night or not and I missed out on any answers you may have provided in the dead thread before I lost access.

A bodyguard stands in for the person protected. A full strength bodyguard can be disguised. The illusionist could not kill them though since they have an “extra life”, similar to the alpha wolf.
