Nintendo Why this clever SNES expansion failed

Super interesting! I'd never heard of it before. It's a shame it was never used to its full potential.

Also, blol @ Famitsu giving the first Pokemon a 7/10. wtf

That's back when their reviews meant something and I felt like they were tougher than most other Publications, and I can kind of see it based on not just the graphics but it's more aimed at kids and if they're used to more in-depth RPGs it will definitely be lacking

Story-wise I can see how Pokemon might not be as in-depth as other RPGs, but mechanics-wise I feel like it's one of the most complex RPGs out there

Is it? It is simple rock paper scissors and is fairly easy. It is clearly for kids. Now there are a lot of cool things it does with the eveolutiosn, great design of the different pokemon and does give a good sense of adventure. I do have a lot of nostalgia for it as I played it as a kid. There are a lot of cool things it does, but I can see why adults would rate it that low, especially back then. Is it higher than a 7? Id say so, but I can 100% understand why adults would rate it that way back then.

It's more than a simple r-p-s, and the Gen 1 games are not that easy. You're going to have to grind at some points unless you really know the mechanics well. The starter Pokemon are r-p-s, but you have 6 different levels of effectiveness (as opposed to r-p-s' 3 levels). You have values like attack, def, speed, special. You have status-enhancing/diminishing moves, and stats-effectinf moves. You have to consider the composition of your team and their individual movesets. There's a (couple of different) monster capture mechanic(s). There's evolutions.

I'd argue it's more complex than other RPGs of the era. I don't know if anything that comes close.

I remember when them giving a game a 10/10 was a huge deal.
