Who plays in VR?

This has probably been the big new piece of hardware since the forums died off last time. So who uses VR, and what do you have?

Personally I used a Quest 2 through Oculus Link on my PC. I used the original Quest for a bit before I got my rig, and I really like it in its own right. But it's a different beast entirely through the Link. Half Life Alyx has been a genuine game changer for me. Stunning, stunning game. I haven't actually finished it yet, but that's mainly because it's even harder to find time to play VR (for which I need my lounge) than it is to sit down at my desk and play on my PC.

There's loads of VR games that I've enjoyed, but I want to give a shout out to the local multiplayer stuff, mostly Keep Talking And No One Explodes and Acron Attack of the Squirrels. I never thought that local multiplayer would be a thing in VR, and I was wrong, because those are both great fun.

HL: Alyx is what sold it for me, too. I also did the MQ2 via Link to my PC, and though I hated the wire (and didn't have a true fast connection since I don't have any USB3.0 ports) but it worked out for me. It was the game that made me go "oh, okay, we're here now". I didn't even care that the graphics were source-like, it was next gen for me and such an insane way of "rebooting" the Half-Life story. They better not cuck us for the next installment, though. This game effectively changed the Half-Life: EP 3 ending that was leaked by the creator, so I really hope we can see how it pans out.

Linking to my PC also showed me the true power the device has. I only used the native Quest stuff for the longest time, not knowing there was an entire separate ecosystem when plugged into PC. I've played Bonelabs/Works, Gorn, Blade and Banner or whatever, Walkabout Mini-Golf, and Beatsaber, to name a few. I don't use it that often, but when I do, I really enjoy it.

What do you mean by local multiplayer? (besides the obvious) I didn't know if this function, I had only played golf with my brother before by still connecting to the internet in the same room.

I use VR for sim racing only currently (and probably someday, flight sim), and being able to sit right there in the cars wass an absolutely mind-blowing experience. At least for me. I also have a pretty nice wheel setup so I'm sure that helps:

I started with an Oculus Rift S in 2019, then got an HP Reverb G2 for 50% off on Black Friday 2022. When I first got the Rift, I tried a few other VR games, like the Spider-Man game and some space walk game. Didn't really love it. Haven't tried Alyx yet, but I might pick it up before the Steam sale ends because I am definitely interested in it.

You won't regret getting HL:A. In fact, you can try the HL2 VR mod free.

Both of those games work differently. In Keep Talking the person with the headset on is diffusing a bomb. The other person is reading the bomb manual on their phone, so the person with the headset has to communicate what they're seeing and the person with the phone has to tell them what to do. It's incredibly tense because there's a timer, and if you do the wrong thing the timer counts down faster.

https://www.bombmanual.com/web/index.html <-- This is the manual you use in the game.

In Acron the person with the headset is a tree trying to prevent squirrels from stealing acorns from the tree's base. The tree can pick squirrels up, throw stuff at them etc. And the squirrels are all other players each controlling a squirrel from their phone. Can be anywhere from 2 to 8 squirrels I think. So good in bigger groups, and again chaotic fun.

Both very different mechanics, but both really quite ingenious in how they work.

Okay, WOAH! I had no idea it was VR + phone integration for the other players. That is genius! I was always scared of the bomb game for anxiety reasons (lol) but I think I need to try now. I live with roommates and this would be perfect for us.

The best use of the quest 2 was looking up VR porn. Just saying....

Kidding. Almost. I haven't tried the multiplayer things, but I have been playing Pavlov (think COD on VR) for a bit now.
Honestly, VR porn was cool like the first time I tried it, until I realized how much of hassle it is to set up and get going and then the aftermath sucks and it just all kinda sucks in the end lmao. My girlfriend and I are going to try it together, though. I think that would be better - having someone on the inside and someone on the outside. Will report back with results next week.

Both the kids do. Older one has a Quest 2 and younger has the older one's Quest 1 now. I only ever did some Beat Saber on one of them for a bit. And before we got the first Quest, I had one of those Samsung VR things for your phone that was okay for basically only watching Netflix. Gave me headaches tho as the thing itself was kind of weird ergonomically for my melon.

As interested I am of the technology in general, I can't really say if there's even any VR games I would like to play. Maybe Half life Alyx? I don't even know if I can handle all the potential motion sickness either lol

Only motion sickness I ever got from it was while riding an elevator for the first time. It has options between moving moving and flash moving - flash moving takes a sec to get used to, but helps alleviate the motion sickness part, in my opinion.

There's also a ton of cool add-ons in the workshop

I think I knew about the different movement options. Kind of rings a bell as I had watched some folks stream some vr games and people I chat saying they were getting motion sick just from watching. It's something I might look into in the future if we get a nice bigger house with a spare room I can turn into my cave.

The big (enough) room is a MUST, I've seen too many things on r/VRtoER, and punched a bedframe more times than I care to admit. I moved my rig into the basement, and have plenty of space now, so, it's become a non-issue. I'm really waiting for true AR to hit the market, though.

I enjoyed my time with my Quest 2 a lot. It took me about two weeks to get used to smooth locomotion in VR but I finally did it. I also really got into Flight Simulator in VR which was extremely fun. I sold my Quest 2 in preparation for Quest 3 so I will jump back in.

Curious to see if someone replies who plays lots of different things on VR. Most seem to have a couple of games they like on it but don't take to much else, not sure why? You paid so much, why wouldn't you play lots of different games on it? My dad loves Elite Dangerous VR. I've tried it and it's an amazing experience. The ships and space stations look huuuuuuge. Can't overstate how much better 3D depth perception is in VR. When something massive flies past you, you can fully appreciate it. Dad enjoyed the game in VR for about a year but now he plays it in normal 2D. Found the sweaty environment in the headset was giving him skin issues. If I don't get it myself eventually, my plan is when I'm a decrepit old man, I'll probably just go full-time into VR life. Would be a fun escape!

Not me! I have bought and played more than 20-30 games, maybe more. Tons of puzzle games, horror games and escape room like games. Red Matter 1 and 2, Floor Plan 2, Shadow Point, and I Expect You to Die series were excellent. Maybe if I count Quest exclusive games my VR games collection is even more than 30-40.
Tried MS Flight sim, but couldn't figure out the camera controls - It always had me on top of the plplane
I had the same issue, there is actually a control to move your position in the plane, cant remeber which was it though.

Half Life Alyx, Blades and Sorcery, Boneworks/lab, job simulator, pavlov, American truck sim, assetto corsa, amongst others. I will give anything the old college try

Job simulator is the Valve one set in the portal universe, right? Saw playthroughs, looked short but fun.

Superhot VR was a game changer for me with VR. I have an Oculus and have used some of the exercise programs on it which have helped getting me active, and I could use some more motivation to do that.

Is there a warranty existing on it? Seems unlikely cat chew toy damage would be covered, but it's worth a shot!
I thought of that too... I would have been willing to pay to have them fix it. I tried for like a week to contact Sony. The serial number or whatever number I needed to enter kept coming up in their system as invalid so I couldn't file a claim, and I tried some other way to contact their support but they were only available during weird hours or some shit? I think I tried getting on the line and couldn't reach them for some reason. After I week I just rage quit. So now I have a 4 year old $400 paper weight. I keep meaning to try selling it on ebay or something, surely someone could use the parts, but I'm too mad to even touch it at this point lol. Does anyone want to buy this thing?

Ouch, those must be some stupid hours indeed if they're that hard to get a hold of! Pretty crappy for a major corporation like them.

I'm sure there's someone that would, definitely!

I would if I could, just out of principle, you don't deserve to get screwed over like that. Alas, I am le broke :D

Depends what you're trying to offload it for. I feel like a wire is fixable

Actually, from reddit, "I just had this exact thing happen. Call PlayStation VR repair line. It’s $99 if you’re out from under warranty and they send you a box to ship it in. They replace the cable and send it back to you."

Yep, this was my plan. I seem to recall it being only right in the middle of my extremely busy workday, and when I tried to get on the line it took so long multiple times I literally could not contact them. I also couldn't find any way to submit a digital support request without the serial number, that for baffling reasons their system just did not recognize. I also looked into fixing the wire myself, but all I could come up with is "it's especially complicated". After a week of effort I literally couldn't spend any more time on it.

The one which connects to the headset, I imagine they're all braided together in there, but presumably a video cable specifically, as it still powered on and seemed to register being connected but was just black. It was also a tiny crimp of a "bite", so it seemed to be the least padded cable ever.

The real question is, what kind of monster designs a VR headset with a cord you cannot unplug and replace?

I have flexible hours because of my caretaking job, if you want to PM me the details I'll call them, lol.
That is way too kind! Now years later I don't manage a really busy coworking space for startups and could take the time to wait an hour for them to answer my call. No, now my only real excuse is the fear I will instead hop on a plane, track down that hardware designer, and catapult him out a window.

But, I almost feel inspired now. I'll let you all know if I go through with..... something.

The offer stands no matter what way you go with it, and if you need a hand tracking down the designer, well, like I said, I have a flexible schedule :D

I feel like I'd be ripping you, or anyone, off having waited so long at this point it's so old now 😆 Amazon says I bought it in April 2019. Ugghhhhhhhhhhhhh must. muster. the will. to contact support. I guess. Likelihood that Chii takes another bite out of it possibly high, she does hate anything that stands between us. $400 did feel like a lot. Then the Apple Vision Pro came along 🤔

So, longshot here. I have a PSVR v1 that I don't use anymore. I upgraded to MetaQuest last year. Can I send it to you, so you can at least get some use out of it? I don't want to sell it, I'd rather give it to someone I know that will actually use it. I have no problem shipping it to you.
