The egg because animals were laying eggs long before chickens existed.
This is the only answer

If the answer is chicken or the chicken egg then the answer is chickens. Chicken egg means an egg from a chicken, not an egg that gives rise to a chicken, so the first chicken had to be around first

As already stated: Ancestor -> Egg w/ evolutionary adaption -> Chicken -> Chicken Egg

It's of course not a clean cut off to where there were just immediately chickens, though. You'd have a few thousands of years at least before "chicken" became a thing.

Does it? I feel like I judge eggs by what pops out of them, not what made them.

Let's imagine a chicken lays an egg and through some crazy unexpected mutation, something not a chicken hatches from the egg. Is that still a chicken egg? Then again, most eggs don't hatch into anything. :thinking

It would be an egg laid by a chicken. A chicken egg.

Even if what comes out is not a chicken, the physical structure of the egg, the yolk, etc. are still all going to be vanilla chicken.

The genetic mutations that alters the thing inside it to no longer be a chicken only happens as the embryo develops, and the eggs exist before they're fertilized.
