Where in the World is dimmerwit?

I have far too many screenshots in Flight Simulator and I thought why not make a challenge out of it?

For the first round, I've made it nice and easy. All of them are in the United States. In potential future rounds I could make different connecting themes with much harder images but also add clues to help you guess. In this round though the images should be fine, and there's no connection between them other than the general fact of being in the US.

Also 10 Schrute bucks if you can name the aircraft.

1. This one should be very easy especially as it's been in the news recently.

2. Also straightforward. Good place for a holiday!

3. A bit more challenging, but it's been in the news not-so recently

4. A test of physical geography perhaps? I think people on here should get this one.

5. I guess this is pretty tough unless you know the city.

1. Alcatraz
2. Oahu (Honolulu), I think. I saw that crater in Test Drive Unlimited.
3. Houston? Massive freeway gives it away.
4. Boston
5. Phoneix?

You got 1, 2 and 4.

3 you're on the right lines. The clue is in the bottom right of the picture.

5, I'd think about the background for this one.

First aircraft is named Frank.
Second is George.
And the last one is definitely a Timothy.

Airplanes named.

5 is Denver. That was my first guess, but I was sure the mountains were closer. Nothing else. It was too small to be LA, it didnt look like Salt Lake, too big to be Albuquerque, mountains are too close for it to be Sacramento. So I was like, it's either Denver or Phoenix. I wasn't sure how close the Phoenix was to the mountains, but I felt like Denver was closer than that image suggests, so I guessed that. I looked up Denver, and that building with the curved top was the first thing that I noticed in the search result. So it's Denver.

3... it's gotta be Dallas, I think. It's missing that weird building with the ball on the top, but based on pictures at least one of the buildings looks like Dallas. My other guesses would have been Corpus, San Antonio, and Charlotte, but based on pictures, none of those have any buildings that look like that skyline... and I over estimated the size of Corpus' downtown. Memory sometimes inflates things.

First go, I didn't look the cities up before guessing. Second time, though, I needed to, because I was definitely missing something.

5 is correct.

3 is also right. My clue for the bottom right was referring to Dealey Plaza which of course is where JFK was shot.

Here are some hints and the answers which I should probably have posted earlier.

2. You're looking at a former volcano in the foreground, one of many in this area.

3. A major Cold War era event took place here in the bottom right of the photo.

4. You're looking at a famous historical harbor, and ironically a river fit for a King.

5.
A load of mountains, but even the flat bits are high.

1. Alcatraz and San Francisco

2. Honolulu, with the Diamond Head volcano in the foreground.

3. Dallas. Dealey Plaza and the former book depository, site of JFK's assassination, are bottom right.

4. Greater Boston area. This is somewhere near Needham looking north east towards the city.

5. Denver.

I assume I'd be terrible at guessing places. I ain't been fuck anywhere to see shit all. (I say, being 3000+ miles from home.)

How IS Flight Simulator? It's always been one of those games I've wondered about because flying is always one of the mechanics I loved the most in games like Battlefield 1942. I know this has no combat, but I'm still curious.

I guess my question is just how technical the flight is. Are you having to keep tabs on thousands of gauges, use 100 keys, etc? I looked up a benchmarking video for my processor/video card and some things were bound to the num pad, of which I do not have one on my compact keyboard. I guess they could be rebound, but that's annoying and I have little attention.

I'd want to do shit like try to crash a plane into my house, or find CECOT.

In short it's as simple or complex as you want, adjustable by the assistance features.

Take a simple plane like the C172 you see in the photo. Put on some assistance like auto trim and yaw assist and you've got something pretty basic where you're pretty much monitoring speed and altitude. Even the more complex planes are easy to fly in that manner if you're just interested in flying around.

Whilst a joystick or yoke is best a simple controller is still good and preferable to a keyboard, or more specifically in conjunction with a keyboard. I think the numpad is used instead of the joystick or the left stick of a controller so I never use it.

Maybe try a month of Game Pass to try it out? It's not for everyone, although 2024 does better with the various activities it offers and even the career mode, buggy as it currently is.

Hmm, fair point on the joystick. 15 years ago when I was playing all of those games with flight mechanics, I had a decent stick with a throttle, yaw, etc.

Maybe flight simulator isn't going to scratch the itch I miss. I need something where the planes have guns on them. Helicopters, too. Battlefield Vietnam, having MajBoothroyd hanging out the side of a Huey helicopter while blasting Fortunate Son and strafing enemies, was peak.

Why don't we try a second round?

I'm going to try giving this round a theme. Piece it together to make things easier. I already thought of some better options, but hey ho. Hopefully this isn't too difficult, but difficulty is always hard to judge.

6. An ironic photo is definitely befitting of this reference.
6.jpg

7. Drugs? Murder? Seems like this place has seen it all many times.
7.jpg

8. Jumping abroad here. Anyone else feeling a little out of place?
8.jpg

9. I suppose in theory a police plane is little more than a travelling cop.
9.jpg

10. This is a DC3, an old-time classic at an old-time classic. If you've got the theme then you'll know what I mean.

Yeah. Civilian Flight Sims aren't for everyone. Ace Combat and Project Wingman are decent options for more casual plane stuff. Otherwise the new Battlefield looks good.

Tubby and I were planning on doing a game similar to this at once point as an FYI. Was going to be amazing race themed. Feel free to steal that idea and take over the subforum that already exists for planning it.
I hadn't seen that. Seems like an interesting idea, although one that would need a bit of planning.

That's why I didn't continue it after he left. Neither of us felt able to run it on our own. You seem to have a good way of sourcing images though at that helps. The tricky part is coming up with how the competition works (teams, hints, timing of challenges, etc).
