Where do you live?

San Juan is a no go. They chose someone else.

Not all CG units are on the Coast. Rivers exist. Service IT support units exist. Our finance unit is in Topeka, KS for some fucking reason.

Are Space Force units in space?

Coast Guard has 10 missions:

Search and Rescue (SAR)
Marine Law Enforcement
Drug Interdiction
Migrant Interdiction
Aids to Navigation (maintaining bouys, lighthouses, etc)
Marine Safety
Port/Waterway/Coastal Security
Maritime Environmental Protection
Living Marine Resources
Polar Ops (Icebreaking, for example)
Defense Readiness

The Coast Guard is the result of a merger of the Revenue Cutter Service and the Lifesaving Service. "Coast Guard" just seemed to fit most responsibilities, I guess.
Well that was highly informative, thanks lol. Do you think you'll remain in STL for a while since San Juan fell through, or are you still on some sort of mandatory moving cycle?

I don't know anything about armed forces and how it works which is why I'm asking.

So, the San Juan thing was an A2P (advance to position) critical fill. Basically, they couldn't fill the position during transfer season (May-July) or something happened to the person in that position. So, in August, they sent out a ciritcal fill solicitation to see if someone in that rate and rank would be willing to transfer and they had no takers. In mid September, they sent out the A2P message for people at my rank to see if their were any takers. The person chosen would have to move to San Juan by Dec 1, but would also advance to the next rank, which means more pay and not having to deal with the advancement process and waiting. The winner basically got to jump the line to the next rank because they needed someone to fill that spot.

I'm not set to rotate out of STL until 2025.

I don’t have any service experience myself… but do people that jump line like that typically get treated differently because of it? That just seems like one of those things that would cause contention to me, no different than other coworkers feeling it was “unearned”.

I would certainly hope not. If any Chief shits on that person for "jumping the line", they are someone who can be deemed to have an irrelevant opinion. Don't like it, sign up the the critical fill and move to San Juan yourself or STFU.

I get it, and that sounds better than what I was expecting. I’ve been that “new guy” that was hired for a position above tenured employees that wanted the position a few times, and there was almost always someone who had to make it difficult. My buddy, a crayon connoisseur, used to tell me some interesting stories about certain ranked promotions that caused issues like that.

Coast Guard isn't as competitive. It's relatively easy to advance in most rates, and it only really gets difficult above E7. From E3 to E7 it's a cakewalk as long as you're not a shitbag and you put forth some effort.
