Where do you live?

Not asking for you to drop coordinates or a pin. I’m not coming to find you. Just curious where in the world everyone is from.

I live in a place called Cheltenham in England. Have done for pretty much all of my life aside from three years in Reading at university.

Y’all have seen my neighborhood if you’ve seen The Wire.

Good luck making it through everything else to get to me.

I remember that you’re from Baltimore actually. I’ve just had a flashback of the location field on old GW. Strange the things that are in the brain somewhere.

I’ve had the same thing happen with registrations, I get it. I’ve accurately “guessed” a few people’s registration month and year from memory here already.

Where in the UK were you? I know you’re a Bolton fan. And what took you away from us?
Born in Bolton, lived in Bolton, Bristol, Wales (near Pontypridd), Scotland (Edinburgh), Finland (Helsinki) and then the US (California, Arkansas, Texas, Arizona). My dad's work made us move a lot.

I'm a little tired of moving, honestly, but AZ is moving in a direction where someone like me probably shouldn't stay here. So I am looking at heading back to the UK or up north to Canada at some time.

You’d make an excellent Canadian as much as you apologize.

I'm not going to get into very specific details, but some may vaguely remember this.

I was involved in a situation that led to me being hospitalized. GW caught wind of this, I think my sister told people either on MSN or one of those messengers, I don't really remember how it got out.

Anyhow, someone on GW who I won't name was apparently calling around the hospitals trying to find me. When I was out of the hospital, they confronted me publically about it and called me a liar. They stated they wanted to send a get well package and I wanted to believe them, but it was also someone who had issues with me so I don't know if that's true or not.

The reality is that due to concern for my safety while they investigated whether this situation was random or targeted, police had instructed hospital staff to not share information of me as a patient.

Either way, I felt awkward as hell and for my personal well being, I will never share where I live on the internet anymore.
I'm so sorry that happened to you. That sounds terrifying.

I was working in Stroud last week, not far from Cheltenham. Quite often go down that way.

I am from Stockton-on-Tees, North East England.

Man… this is always one of the biggest fears about running a community, because you can’t say for certain if it was good intent or malicious because it simply didn’t go far enough to become one or the other.

You hear all kinds of crazy stories in staff forums about personal information being leaked or shit like that, and you can only do so much from an administrative point after the fact.

IMO they never believed you and were trying to prove you a liar from the get go. I doubt they would've done anything at all if they'd found you, including admit that they'd looked in the first place. Regardless of their actual intentions, that level of interest is so creepy.

I've never had any issues with anyone on the Internet, but I've definitely gotten more careful telling people IRL where I live. There's some weird fucking people out there (no offense to all of you who are weird in a fun way).

I remember you being in hospital. Didn’t you get shot or something? I remember it being bad. Glad you’re alright now anyway.

Thanks for the kind words. My main intent of sharing it is honestly just a cautionary tale about sharing where you live. Not to put this person on blast.

Absolutely. These kind of cautionary tales weren’t so prevalent back then, because it was all about “don’t meet strangers online because they’re gonna touch your no-no zone” at the time.

GW was an especially tricky place because of its scale… the inevitability of having members in such a close proximity to other members made it a constant concern, and then, there were a lot of people meeting up with other members (myself included, I’ve met several over the years).

I get being curious but I left it out on purpose. It's been a long time, maybe they've changed, maybe they regret it, or maybe they don't give a shit. If they ever see this, I'll leave it to them to come forward if they choose.

IF that person does register, and it becomes an issue, PLEASE let one of us know and they’ll be dealt with accordingly. This applies to EVERYONE… We do not want ANYONE to go through that kind of shit here, and we will do everything within our capabilities to put an end to it before it becomes an issue.

Good memory. Yup, one bullet to the abdominal area. Still one of the worst days of my life. So you can imagine my emotional stress going through that and then coming back to that.

Phew. You’re lucky, bro… those kinda shots have such a high likelihood of turning septic and going south quick.

Damn! So glad you recovered from that, and yeah, I can absolutely understand the emotional stress caused from something like that. No one steals our TD from us!

I currently live, and for the past decade have lived, in Somerville Massachusetts. It's famous for being where fluffernutter was invented. Also for a lot of mafia activity in the past (right near where I live! I'm down the street from winter Hill). It's now quite possibly the most left leaning and hippie filled socialist paradise in the country. I love it.

My dad and one of my aunts actually lived here back when the mob was running the show. They actually got on the good side of them by being born and raised in MA, my grandfather being a veteran, and probably most specifically because my grandma had loose connections to the mafia herself back in the day (she is the Irish one in the family).

We'll be moving one city over soon, to Medford. That's where Tufts University is based. It's also about as far out from Boston that I can see myself living if we stay in Mass forever... And it's not really that far out from Boston.

That's a change up. Would this be for work? For whatever reason I thought you worked coast guard but there are no coasts to guard in St. Louis lol
San Juan is a no go. They chose someone else.

Not all CG units are on the Coast. Rivers exist. Service IT support units exist. Our finance unit is in Topeka, KS for some fucking reason.

Are Space Force units in space?

Coast Guard has 10 missions:

Search and Rescue (SAR)
Marine Law Enforcement
Drug Interdiction
Migrant Interdiction
Aids to Navigation (maintaining bouys, lighthouses, etc)
Marine Safety
Port/Waterway/Coastal Security
Maritime Environmental Protection
Living Marine Resources
Polar Ops (Icebreaking, for example)
Defense Readiness

The Coast Guard is the result of a merger of the Revenue Cutter Service and the Lifesaving Service. "Coast Guard" just seemed to fit most responsibilities, I guess.

I’ve learned more about the coast guard from this post than I did driving past a coast guard yard for decades wondering “what those fuckers are up to over there protecting the Patapsco”.

The Yard is where our cutters go to be renovated. Maybe some are built there, but mostly it's for renovations.

I don't like the Yard. I don't ever want to be stationed in Baltimore BECAUSE I don't like the Yard.

The guys that work out of that particular one are MISERABLE as fuck, dude. You are not making a bad career choice by avoiding it like the clap. They leave like once a week to go down the road to quite possibly the shittiest Walmart in the state.

problem is that we have a lot of locations that people do not want to go to.

Detroit, the Yard, HQ in DC, TISCOM in Alexandria, CSD (where I am) in STL, Topeka, San Juan, Alaska. Alameda and Portsmouth aren't popular either. Elizabeth City, too.
