Sony TIL: PS2s Do Not Display PS1 Games at the PS2 Native Resolution

I know, I know, "PS1 backwards compatibility is possible because they pretty much stuck a PS1 in the console", but I half expected it to be just like sticking a Gamecube game in the Wii or a Wii game in the Wii U. Instead of displaying games at the 480i native PS2 resolution, the console shifts to 240p output in order to display PS1 games. No stretching of the screen, it literally just displays at 240p and as such I cannot use component cables with my PS2 to play PS1 games. Both my TV and my receiver say that the input is invalid. Guess I just need to wait on my PS3 to be fixed.

Also, PS2 games look like ass. So many jaggies.

Edit: Composite cables work fine, but that defeats the purpose of using the PS2 as I could just use the PS1 to play PS1 games,
The more I dive into trying to get all these older consoles to look like they should on a modern TV, the more I feel like I really need to shell out for a Retrotink device.
