...You DO understand where I was, what I was doing, and what went through my mind briefly when I saw NSFW pop up right? :tease

I'm offended that that didn't earn me top marks for reports. Y'all slackin'!

What season number is The Simpsons even on, now? Please say it's something reasonable like 10. :paranoid

We *might* have members here younger than season 10…

Edit - an update. @shortkut brings up valid points, as always.

35 fucking seasons?! How? HOW?!

...This is going to require alcohol. And a thread. And probably some achievements to grind.

We'll get back to this over the weekend. And I'm flipping a coin to decide which of y'all git got whenever possible in the future! :tease

See, there are dozens 3 of us! Very normal thing, this not watching of The Simpsons.

I at least played the old SNES game. That's gotta count for half a point, at least? :tease

I'm going to say it even though it might be a worse offense than supporting putting pineapple on pizza: I don't think any of you who haven't seen it are missing much. It's sometimes funny, but it's not that funny. I definitely would not spend the time to watch 38 or even 10 seasons. Maybe watch a couple seasons the next time you're sick and want to put on something that you don't have to pay much attention to.

I've heard of the, uh, bad years through osmosis (and YouTube videos with obscene runtimes) - which season(s) were those, super fans?
There are varying answers you will get as to when it all went downhill. Some say after Season 8, and some say later. I've seen all of the first 13 seasons (which isn't even half the entire run of the show, crazily enough), but I have only seen a handful of episodes after 14. I like just about everything in the first 9 or 10 seasons. Seasons 11-13 are bolstered by nostalgia, as I saw these episodes a lot in syndication when they were still relatively new, and while there is a lot of great stuff in there, they are noticeably worse than the golden age.

If I were being cynical, I would say the majority of everything after 13 is garbage in comparison to Seasons 3-8. If I were being fair, I would say I can't judge too much with how little I have seen of the later seasons. I think a happy medium would be to say it just became a different show that wasn't my cup of tea.

Off the top of my head I'll give you a sampler platter of 10 episodes from the golden age if you would rather not tackle an entire season right away, then you can decide if more is in your future. In no particular order (season number in parentheses):

Marge vs. the Monorail (4)
Cape Feare (5)
Homer at the Bat (3)
Last Exit to Springfield (4)
Lisa on Ice (6)
Treehouse of Horror V (6)
Summer of 4 ft. 2 (7)
You Only Move Twice (8)
Deep Space Homer (5)
Bart Sells His Soul (7)

Thanks for this rundown, because I’ll be honest… I haven’t seen shit past the movie. I may have even missed a season or three before the movie, which is probably why it didn’t land well with me beyond nostalgia. I heard a lot of negativity about newer seasons, but haven’t seen anything for myself to have my own opinion.

I remember liking the movie when I saw it in the theater. It was released between Seasons 18 and 19, which was long after I had stopped watching new episodes. You could tell they were trying to harness the "classic Simpsons," and I think they even brought back some of the old writers to help. I think they did about as well as one could hope for at that point. I haven't watched the movie in many years, so I would be curious to see what I think of it now. It makes you wonder what the movie would have been like had they made it in the mid 90s at the peak of their powers.

I can agree with that… the nostalgia was definitely there, but the rough around the edges feel of the older seasons was barely visible to me. I couldn’t tell if it was because I was older, or if the writing team had changed. I never really payed attention to those details, just like I never really paid attention to the folks saying that the show took a politically correct turn to have that negative opinion.

I would have loved to see a movie from the prime, though. Mid to late 90’s would have been ideal, and it’s not like there wasn’t an audience for the movie back then… Simpsons merch was everywhere, everyone knew about the show, even if they didn’t watch it.

I agree with Big daddy also on that list.
I watched for a little longer (probably because I'm fractionally younger than you guys) and was watching up until the movie. I quit in Season 19 as realised how poor it had gotten.

I agree that seasons 3-8 are the best and then the quality up until 13 is still there but starts to get a few crappy episodes in there. Season 14-18 I'm not sure how I actually watched those having looked back on the episodes more recently.

I haven’t watched it for twenty years, but I used to. I dropped out when it went into syndication, and had like, a 1 in 10 chance of not being a repeat.

How can you avoid even 1 ep though? Like, not even who shot mr burns? I mean that was culturally significant!

I’ve never really watched Friends, but I’ve seen the odd episode here and there. 🤷‍♂️

Ok I'm gonna say it

Marge vs The Monorail is the most overrated episode of the Simpsons

Ok did that get your attention? GOOD.

it's a good episode but I honestly don't think it's one you show people to get them into the show. It's like showing someone Samoa Joe vs Kenta Kobashi to get them into pro wrestling. To people who are already invested, it's a masterpiece. But to the uninformed, it's okay I guess.

That's too far.

However...

That's probably fair. But that does bring up an interesting question: what would be the ideal "get someone into the show" episode(s)?
