Misc. Media The Theatre (well, it's an 'I just saw Hamilton' thread, but probably best to widen it out)

So, I did just see Hamilton last night in Liverpool. I knew not a single thing about it going in, and I absolutely loved it. Exactly how modern theatre should be in my opinion.

Anyone else seen it? Favourite shows etc? I don't go very often, but I am also going to see the Cursed Child in London with my wife and daughter in a couple of weeks, and can't wait for that either.

I saw it when it was on Disney+. It wasn’t bad, but I think it is one that would have been better in person

My two favorite that I’ve seen on Broadway are:
Lion King - I saw it as a child either its first or second summer. It was incredible. I then took my wife to see it and it was just as good if not better than I remembered

Wicked - I went in with low expectations and everything about it (production, songs, etc) blew me away

Honorable mention: Phantom of the Opera - really good, but not quite as good as the two I mentioned

My wife and I used to go to all sorts of shows when they'd come through town.

Maybe the most powerful one was seeing Come From Away on Sept 11.

former theatre kid here, i've probably acted in more plays than i've seen but here's some hits i can remember
  • my london trip in 2012 (where i got to meet olga and sab!) featured a show on West End as part of its itinerary. that show ended up being Wicked, and i had an absolutely phenomenal time
  • this isn't a musical, but the university i went to had a decently renowned professional repertory company, and one semester they put on Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. if you're not in the know, it is a truly epic production, in the truest sense of the word epic. it has two parts, each of which takes over three hours to stage and traditionally they're staged on alternating nights. i didn't really know what to expect going in, but let me tell you it uses every minute of its six-hours-plus runtime. it is maybe the definitive work borne from the AIDS crisis. it got adapted into a similarly acclaimed HBO miniseries in the early 2000s, and playwright Tony Kushner is a frequent collaborator of Steven Spielberg. in 2017 there was a production with Andrew Garfield playing the main character and Nathan Lane putting in a star turn as Roy Cohn (yeah, that Roy Cohn. this play goes places)
  • i didn't see these in person but shouts out also to the musicals Fun Home and Falsettos (the playwright of the latter passed away earlier this year

The most recent one I went to was Back to the Future (the musical) when it was here in town. It was a good show but the one in London was better (saw that in October).

@Quagmire I made it to & Juliet! It was REALLY good. Sorry you missed it.

I'm not really a musical theater go-er so usually 1 musical is my limit 😆 I made an exception this year just because my friend wanted to see Back to the Future and of course my husband was going but he didn't want to go without me so there I went.

Past musicals
I really enjoyed The Book of Mormon when it came into town maaannyy years ago.
I also really liked Phantom when I saw it on Broadway (core memory from my high school senior trip)
Oklahoma was my first ever musical. It was good, no complaints.

I think the theatre always is. My wife had seen it on Disney+ and really liked it, but thought it was better in person. We were in front of the stage as well, which seemed to me to be the best angle to view it from because you have a good view of the higher areas but cannot see the floor, which means you can't see it moving and the effect from just watching the people move is probably quite a bit better.

Yeah I mean it's a core memory for alot of us, so it's gonna hit the feels. And like I said, the performance we saw was literally on Sept 11, so it hit even harder.

I've actually been to Gander and they have a big section in their airport museum about it.

Also my experience in Newfoundland is that the people literally are as kind as welcoming as they are portrayed.
