In Wolf, I tag all of the players in the first post, but they aren't getting notified for some reason. If I copy the tags from the first post and reply with it, then they do get notified. Any idea what's going on? Can you not tag people in the first post?

Solution
So the problem does indeed seem to be quoting.

In the first one I quoted where you were tagged then removed the quote coding.

In the second one I just straight up tagged you.

Nope, I didn't schedule it for exactly that reason.

Well, shit. Can you walk me through what you did here or in DM if it’ll compromise the game? I might have an idea for a workaround that might require a little finesse, but I’d have to know how you got to the issue in the first place.

My initial assumption is going to be the fact that you’re editing an existing post, and it’s just not recognizing the first post as “new” if tags were added after the tagged person last viewed it. It seems like there’s a gray area, as if it’s treating the edited first post as old content and not triggering the newly added tags as long as the individual has previously viewed the post.

If that’s the case… we might be able to work around that by moving posts like that from the dead forum to the game thread, which does nothing for any edits added to the first post. Which means… if that’s an issue, we might have to hack and slash code if someone is feeling stabby, or we might have to approach updating first posts with a supplemental post tagging all players, which means @shortkut might finally have to read.

Oh, another thing… are you opting to edit the post silently? Because that may interfere with tags as well.

I'm not editing anything. I go to my previous post, click quote. Then I start a new thread, and insert the quote. Then I click the [ ] icon to view the code and delete the quote tags. Then I go back to the WYSIWYG editor, make any other changes to the post I want to make, then post it.

I post it as sticky, but I don't lock the thread.

I would not be surprised if the thing is being magically fickle from using quote or something, even if you're deleting the quote afterwards.

Could always test by quoting a tag, then removing the quote, leaving the tag in there, and then posting - then seeing if the tagged user got the notification.

Whatever is done with the first post in wolf games has always been fickle, when I played I never got notified.

That's so odd. It shouldn't be an issue. I'll search XF releases and see if it was a bug addressed in subsequent releases, or if it's one we need to address with them.

When you quote, it already has the user tags added. Maybe that's related? Perhaps a "feature" to prevent tags from notifying people when they're quoted? So it looks like this:

It was working at one point, I think we got rid of it

Pretty sure that’s one that took a shit when an update pushed through for either that add-on or XF. I wanna remember everyone noticing and then a collective “oh well, Alu still sucks” afterwards.

So my thoughts are largely around quoting, too. XF disables tags within some bb code, and I think there are times when the quote tags don't delete properly from the editor.

Changing to tag layout should solve that, but... Who knows?

Other thought is it might be some cron job pushing the notifications, that's not triggering immediately.

I'll have to test myself when I'm at my desk.

Oh, and to document it, the problem Jon was having with Neon Nexus wasn't likely quite the same issue.

You were specifically scheduling those posts ahead of time, and it was alerting people when you tagged them by name, but only those with moderator permissions were able to see the scheduled post. I'd assume that anyone who didn't have permission to see the pre-scheduled post, they'd have gotten no notification. Likewise, when the post did publish on the set time, the moderators who were alerted first wouldn't get alerted again.

The instances where the code for a post is copied and pasted, and it still doesn't work, I have no idea... I don't think it's necessarily the USER tags not being added around them, because the names will be blue links in the posts, they just don't ping the respective users correctly. So, I'd hazard to think again some kind of CRON issue where it's not syncing up to push the errors at the right time.
