In a pinch for time today for dinner, we microwaved frozen mashed potatoes from Trader Joe’s. 3 minutes in 50% power then 6-8 minutes on high. Most plastic containers would melt making that
In my experience, that depends a lot on the plastic and what you're heating up. Boiling water in a plastic measuring cup is fine (I've done it many times) but something oily can get too hot (e.g. liquid bacon grease will melt a plastic measuring cup regardless of how it's been heated). The plastic shouldn't melt from the microwave itself if it's microwave safe. But I'll admit I don't use my microwave a ton, and I never get stuff very hot in it, so maybe if you microwave a plastic container for ten+ minutes, it really does melt.

@Fool's Requiem it seems you've decided to compromise on some of your rules, such as no perishables or not wanting to buy too much (I assume you had to buy an entire head of cabbage, which I personally wouldn't be able to eat in a sitting). Did you find a way to make that more manageable?

I bought a bag of sauerkraut. I'm not about to try to figure out how to make a head of cabbage and turn it into sauerkraut.
Probably cheaper and easier to just buy it. A pound of organic fresh sauerkraut near me is about $3.50. A head of cabbage (average 3 lb) is about $3
