Sony State of Play - September 24, 2024 (6PM EST)

State of Play is back tomorrow, September 24! Tune in live for news and updates on more than 20 upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games from studios around the world.

The 30+ minute show begins September 24 at 3pm PT / 6pm ET | September 25 12am CEST / 7am JST on YouTube and Twitch, and will be broadcast in English and Japanese. See you tomorrow!

I am ready to be whelmed.

I'm pleasantly surprised with how this went. A few highlights:
  • Astro Bot - Free DLC coming later this year
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered coming October 31 - $10 upgrade if you already own it on PS4 (I thought for sure it would be a full price upgrade)
  • Release date for Lego Horizon Adventures: November 14
  • Ghost of Yotei (sequel to Ghost of Tsushima) coming 2025
  • PS+ October games: Dead Space and WWE 2K24 (I wanted to buy both of these but didn't want to pay the price for them; subbing to PS+ for a year is a cheaper way of doing that!)
  • Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1-2 Remastered - never played these but am definitely interested
  • Dragon Age Veilguard gameplay football - I honestly thought this looked kinda lame, but I'm not much of a Dragon Age fan.

I had a pretty good idea of what I'd be playing from now until Christmas, and I think that's been completely shaken up by this, so definitely a good announcement in my view. I'm also going to bump up Ghost of Tsushima on my list to play!

Some cool news drops in the SoP.

I'm teetering more and more on the verge of buying a PS5. Prices aren't coming down any time soon, so if I can snag a Pro 30th Anniversary Edition, I might just do it. I'm not sure how I'd even be able to do that here in Saudi, though. If I can't get a hold of one, I might just hold off a bit, still. I have plenty of PS3 and PS4 games to work on still, but that PS5 library is getting more and more interesting to me.

I wonder what the PS6 will look like... the improvement from PS4 to PS5 is so marginally incremental IMO that I can't imagine the need to put out another console for, like, another ten years, minimum.

this was the best state of play in a long time.
im pretty excited that last of us part 1 is coming to ps plus tomorrow as ive never gotten around to playing those games.

also its refreshing to see different reactions here instead of some of the other communities im in. other gaming communities in a nutshell:
- omg stellar blade and nier automata collab!?!?
- doki doki!?!?
- female samurai????? more like ghost of wokeness

ghost of yotei looks incredible though and i will probably get it day 1.

i flicked it on 20 minutes in after forgetting it was happening and maybe this speaks to how checked out i am of the contemporary games scene but i didn't see anything interesting. everything was either a remaster a sequel or a crossover. i'm so glad i don't care about nier lore so i don't have to play stellar blade (for instance, some nier lore is locked behind 80 levels and 3 ffxiv expansions so you can play the three crossover alliance raids lol)

im also so glad i dont care about marginal graphics improvements but at the same time i still can't comprehend how sony is charging 10 bucks for the horizon zero dawn remaster (are we really at the point where we're remastering a game that came out 7 years ago?) but actually i can since sony is charging 800 bucks for a ps5 that runs kind of better and has no disc drive

i think more than anything i just miss e3 which speaks to a deep sickness i have as a person

FWIW the discord I'm on with my Boys was all about the Stellar Blade/Nier thing but they flip out over anything Nier.

Once a year or so they try and basically blackmail me into giving that game another shot.

i liked nier:automata even though it was my first (and thus far only although replicant just went on sale...) nier game. but i'm also a sucker for timeloops and robots and completely inscrutable lore and multiple endings that correspond to each letter of the alphabet
See that's totally my jam too but for whatever reason I just cannot lose myself in that game no matter how many times I try

I'm intrigued by Mafia: The Old Country and the new Dying Light too (though DL1 was leagues better than DL2 imo)
Oh I'm all about Mafia: The Old Country.

I still maintain that if they would have stripped Mafia III down to be more narrative-focused like it's predecessors, it could have been my GotY. Instead they bloated it with all that open world GTA:SA knockoff junk.

Amazing story and few period piece games have felt so much like a direct portal to another time.

I need to know why. What don't you like about it? It's one of the games that have caught my eye, and I'm looking forward to trying it out (despite knowing almost nothing about it).

Totally agree. I loved the first two games. The third just fell a bit flat to me. So I hope this gets back to its roots

Part of it is just the general look. Something about how washed out everything looks, while fitting the narrative, just is rough for me to look at. Might be a colorblindness thing too, I've got an odd yellow/white issue that could be at play.

The gameplay has its moments. One of the first boss fights (in an abandoned amusement park) is one of the coolest boss fights I've ever experienced in ANY game. But the normal, running around fighting is dreadfully boring to me.

Plus the game really has this pervading sense of depression for me, which is not typically what I'm looking for in my gaming time.

Obviously, YMMV, because I'm in the minority of clicking with this game. But I think I would probably REALLY dig it if it was a movie, or better yet a novel.

But then you'd lose the meta aspects...

also its refreshing to see different reactions here instead of some of the other communities im in. other gaming communities in a nutshell:
I would say that most of the hobbies I enjoy have pretty toxic fanbases, but gaming is without question the worst and most toxic fanbase. I think that's part of what makes GW so great. Even if we disagree on stuff, it's very easy to discuss gaming here compared to other parts of the internet.

I feel like the Horizon thing was not explained properly by Sony (or really at all, since it was only just announced yesterday). There were several other games that had a paid $10 upgrade path from PS4 to PS5. My understanding of this is that Horizon and TLOU Part II are the only ones that had an element of remastering/improvement. I totally agree that it's too soon to remaster a game so recently, but I don't think this is all that different from what they've done elsewhere, it's just a larger improvement between the two systems.

You're more of a discerning gamer than I am, so it doesn't sound like anything I can't tolerate. In fact, when you said "one of the coolest boss fights ever", that actually got me amped up to play the game haha

You clearly have no idea some of the crap games I revel in :link

Dude, honestly, that one fight alone is what ends up convincing me to give the game another go every so often.

I'm just here to say I cannot believe they are releasing Doki Doki Literature Club with Essential to the masses. I cannot wait for a new wave of reactions to this game.
