The village square was quieter than usual, but it wasn't peace — it was pressure. The kind that builds in chests and behind clenched jaws, just before things go wrong.

Jawneh stood near the centre, dirt on his boots, fists knotted at his sides. His voice cracked from shouting all morning.

"I've taken hits for this town," he growled. "Ask around. I've stood between danger and your soft little faces more nights than you know."

A few heads turned, uncertain. But not dimmerwit.

From atop a barrel, dimmerwit pointed with a trembling, determined finger. "Shirk this, wolf boy!" he yelled, loud enough for the birds to scatter. "You talk like you've bled for us — well, maybe it's time you bled for real."

Jawneh's face went red. Then white. Then... still.

The crowd surged forward, not with glee, but with that grim momentum of people who just need the shouting to stop. Rope pulled, feet kicked, and the day was done.

But then came the thud — not from a body, but from a slip of metal falling from his coat.

A scratched emblem. A badge of protection. A sign.

The crowd backed away, slowly, as realisation settled in like dusk.
