That is true. And it might even work lol.

On a scale of 1 to papaya, how amused were you by it?

when i went to austin, we landed at houston. i wanted to be get the american experience immediately and drive to austin but no one else was keen.
I realized it the last time I went back to Finland to see my folks that everything I thought as a kid was "so long and far away" was actually stupid close.

Here it's like half an hour the shortest to get into a more populated area. After driving through a lot of basically nothing or farm land.

Every time I've been to New Zealand we had to drive everywhere because once you leave the cities civilisation just evaporates into the ether.
yeah but the furthest settlement from the ocean is 119km away (although windy, you can't just gun it). and our country is unbelievably hilly, you can't just make trains everywhere.

@Kat i drive mostly to school and back (which i can see the school from my house but the hill is massive and my child is 5 and i have to work immediately after dropping her off or even earlier), and to basketball... so probably like 5 miles a week, max. working from home exclusively and having school nearby makes a big difference for that though.

I work from home too and have no kids and I've driven about 10k miles over the past three years. A calculator says that's about 60 miles a week on average. Everybody I know IRL jokes about how I never drive anywhere too.

Maybe you're right about driving being American.

my wife will also use the car do get groceries in the weekend, and take our daughter swimming. and for me to play cricket during some summer saturdays. most of these places are nearby though.

we definitely don't do 60 miles a week. maybe for a time when we, by choice, chose to send our kid to a much further away day care from where we live. but even then, we did not.

and it's really only since we moved to where we did that we even drive as much as we do. there's still buses - my wife takes the bus when she goes into the office on monday and friday - but we live kinda off beat from the natural flow of the city. all the things i need or go to aren't on suitable bus routes, but aren't far away, so we drive. but still very little really. but you don't want to be walking, it's all hills.

I drive about 25 miles to work and back. So that was a minimum of around 250 miles a week before I got on my 12h shift. Now it's only 150.

But there's still the occasional drive to the city for groceries from the cheaper stores and other things. So at least one drive there and back to round it up.

But yeah. Used to be a good 10k miles at least a year.

The kids has a specialist he goes to see usually once a year. About 3 hour drive down south.

The better hospital with a lot better services, and the one we go bring the kids if it isn't a normal physical, is like an hour and half away in the green state to the east (Vermont). Been there quite a few times now.

The Big Apple is about 6h drive straight down south on the highway (if you take it chill and don't speed). Luckily haven't had to do that for a little bit. It's also a little bit too far away to comfortably go there to enjoy anything. Kind of feels bad to "live in NY" but also to be nearly as far as possible from being in the city itself. Welp.

do you have a car that's fun to drive at least?
Nah I got a Honda Accord lol.

Back to my FL trip, here’s how fucked in the head I am. Football game was at 6 pm near Orlando. My wife was running a 10k Sunday morning at 7 am and was nervous about it and wanted me to run with her. So I worked the game. Ended at like 9:30, I’m on the road by 10pm. Drive all night, get to the race at 6am. Run the 10k race. And we had no childcare, so I was pushing the baby in the stroller the whole way.

…honestly I signed up for it just cause I wanted to see if I could do it.

This time of year im either flying or driving for football. I usually drive if it’s 6 hours or less, fly if it’s longer. I drove to Orlando back in August even though it’s 8 hours because I had to get back immediately and there were no flights.

I’ll be driving to DC on Friday and back on Saturday. 330 miles each way.
Man, I can't drive that much anymore. Three to four hours in a day is about my limit nowadays. I have no idea how I once drove from here to Vegas (roughly 16 hours/1000 miles each way) for a long weekend. It seems like insanity in retrospect.

That drive back after Vegasing would be bruuutal

When we were planning our Florida trip back before August, there was a consideration to drive down there as it's basically a straight shot. It's "only" a 21h drive that you could easily shave down some with only a little bit of speeding.

No idea if I could actually do it. The wife wanted to do it. A lot of it sight-seeing related and we would've had the advantage of having our own car instead of getting a rental. Still though, 2ish hour flight, even with waiting at the airport and driving from there to our airBnB came to less than 5h total travel. I'll take that any day.

how long is that drive for you? i hear that, that's a lot of money

for a long period of time we could fly to auckland from here for like $100 to go to the casino and watch the bigger sport. it'd be an 8 hour or more drive normally.
Every time I try to budget out flying vs driving financially it gets ugly.

My mom lives 800 miles away. It’s a 14 hour drive through every major city on the east coast of the US. So when we go visit, naturally we look to fly. But there’s five of us. $300 a pop and that’s $1500 to see grandparents. Or $100 to drive. So eff that children, enjoy the minivan life.

At least, if it was up to me…my wife disagrees and we’re flying for Christmas this year

yeah this is different, this makes total sense

@Zell 17 the dead thread want to know more about why you need to go to so much football, is it related to your job or something? Or are you just mentally harmed (that was me asking)?

So college football is organized into groups of schools called conferences. I’m hired by a conference and can be sent to any school in the conference. Some of the conferences are quite large geographically. This year I’ve had games in Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, etc.

That's sick, but sent to do what? Carry out assassinations?
