Make a rule about no phones/tablets during movie time.

Or start with similar but much shorter movies with bright colors and lots of energy.

I don't know how much I'd enjoy the Lord of the Rings as a kid. There's a lot of really boring stuff, especially in The Two Towers (fucking ents...)

I did the full LotR set with my oldest a couple of months ago, it was real nice. He was 16 at the time and into stuff like LotR. So it was a cool experience to share!

Oh I totally agree. We had a weekly competition for most items scanned per hour, with the only prize being your name on a ranking board, and I lived for that shit. There was no punishment for not making a certain quota though, and people who didn't like to compete simply didn't.

I definitely don't want to force it on them and make it feel like a chore with them being all resentful. What would be the point?

I think my oldest might have watched it with me years ago, can't remember well enough to be sure. The three young ones almost surely won't though, and the oldest has since changed where she would probably tune out too if I had her rewatch it with me.
