Welcome to the club.

Astro Bot is definitely a solid choice.

One of the recommendations I'd make for you before you buy games is to check out the library. Not sure how it is out your way but mine has dozens of PS5 games, including things like Astro Bot.

What's some good games?

Probably gonna get Astrobot pretty quick here, and gonna be Lego Horizon to play with my son.
Let us know how Lego Horizon is! I definitely want to try that game.

As for games to buy, I'd say it depends on if you had a PS4 and/or a PC. You can't miss with any of the Sony exclusives: the Horizon, God of War, and Spider-Man Series are good places to start. Demon's Souls Remastered is maybe the best-looking game on PS5 and tons of fun (though very difficult).

If you want another game to play with your son, the latest Ratchet & Clank game (Rift Apart) is a good choice too.

Probably the most fun game that I have played on my PS5 is Cyberpunk, but that isn't an exclusive.

the little astro bot tech demo that comes with the PS5 is worth playing--it demos the controller-specific tech really well and will be a good way to preview the dedicated astro bot game before splurging on it

apart from that it's honestly hard to recommend any PS5-specific games just because there are...so few of those. anything you get specifically for the PS5 will benefit from the way shorter load times (the SSD and what it does for load times is far and away my favorite aspect of the upgrade from PS4 to PS5--it's like night and day) and marginal graphical updates, but most of the games available that way are available on other platforms.

if you have PS Plus Essential, that's a good way to expand your library with the monthly titles (which are about to cycle over next week) and if you have a higher tier of PS Plus that entitles you to a ton more games, although i personally have too big of a backlog already to justify the cost for a service i wouldn't really have the time to use

I did briefly have PS+ Extra and I think there's a way to benefit from it. If you are planning on purchasing a game and you're near the end of your PS+ subscription, you can usually upgrade at a pro-rated price, so as long as you finish the game you were thinking of buying before your subscription ends, it can be cheaper to upgrade.

I did this with Stray. It cost me less than $40 CAD to upgrade last year around Christmas, but that's how much Stray would have cost on its own.

Mine had Astrobot's playroom and a ghost of tsushima trial, but I already have that on PS4.

Basically my PS4 I think is on its last legs. I keep getting database errors and the disc drive seems to in the beginning stages of demonic possession. So I have a bunch of PS4 games already, and I did make sure to get the disc drive PS5 to be able to play them still.

Have a PS4 and mainly do my PC gaming via Steamdeck (I have Chiaki installed on it to allow remote play to the PS4 and intend to set up the PS5 as well)

I already have and love both Horizon games and the first Spiderman. Ratchet and CLank may be a good call. Is Rift Apart 2 player?

Dont have PS Plus currently, but have often in the past, so do have a bunch available there (I believe I would not to resub to access them though). I might keep on eye on the monthly offerings coming up and see if anything piques my interest,

Ah the dreaded demonic possession stage. That's unfortunate about your library not having options.

I'm not sure what your tastes in games are so I'll do a couple categories. I saw you ask about co-op but sadly there's not a lot of options there.

Shows off what the PS5 does best:
Astro Bot
Demons Souls
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Returnal
Spiderman 2

Well received but not everyone's cup of tea:
FFVII Rebirth
Final Fantasy XVI
God of War Ragnarok
Stellar Blade

I'll also toss a shoutout to Stray as a short but charming indie game.

I just checked my catalog, and I have 259 games from Playstation Plus. 140 from the store that I actually bought. I'm sure I've actually played like... <40% of them.

I can't even remember all the shit that's in there without looking, so just going down the list...

Baldurs Gate 3 is great, though not an exclusive. If you don't have it on PC though I'd definitely recommend it. I got my partner to start playing too, though not very frequently so we haven't gotten out of act 1 yet.

My daughter enjoys Disney Dreamlight Valley a lot, though also not exclusive. Might be a good one for the kids if they're into any Disney stuff.

Final Fantasy XVI was the best one I've played in a while, and was far more tolerable than those FF11-FF15 ones.

I apparently have 13 Resident Evil games... which I think puts it as my most owned series, which I wouldn't have expected.

Rogue Legacy 2 was a ps4 release I think, at least the first one was, but that's one of my favorite rogue-likes.

The Spider-Man games were good, though I just realized I skipped Spider-Man: Miles Morales and went straight from Spider-Man to Spider-Man 2. I don't think it caused me to really miss any references, but I'll have to go back to that one.

Stray is great and very atmospheric, without being that complex. Definitely recommend.

They might be on PC or something, but the Dark Pictures Anthology was interesting. They're 'intense standalone branching cinematic horror games' with single/multiplayer modes. They all use real actors (like Will Paulter) and the Mo-Cap, etc. is well done, so it enforces the cinematic feel. I believe I played Little Hope and Man of Medan, but still have to get to House of Ashes.

Oh, and it's an old PS3 game but available on PS+, but Tokyo Jungle is enjoyable. It's set in a future where humans are gone and animals have taken over the city, with you starting out with small creatures like a pomeranian, and get access to bigger ones like tigers as you progress.

It's a whole new game, and a full sized one at that.

As a fellow former member of the Platform Games Club I can report that it's very good!
I've been playing it since I posted that, and I agree, it's great. They put the PS5 features to good use. Finding collectibles is just difficult enough to be engaging without being frustrating. My cat is getting annoyed at the controller speaker, but I have no complaints about it.

Astro's Playhouse and Astro Bot are incredible games for kids, probably the best I've encountered. My nephews at 6 and 7 can capably play them, my 8 year old is a pro at it, and I love playing them, too. They are the best pure platformers that have come out since Mario Odyssey, arguably better.

Depending on what you have played since you have a PC, I was never a God of War fan before this new iteration, but they are the best games on the console.

Horizon Forbidden West if you haven't played it, is ideal on PS5. The haptic controls really add to the experience. It's a long game, though. 81 hours was my final playthrough including the expansion game.

Plenty of other 3rd party games, but the above are my must plays.
