So I think I'd rank it...

But it's a real tight call between if it should be 3 or 4.

Plot was better than Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, for sure. The core message is still "corporate greed" but it's got some justification to it. It's not some whack-ass "we're going to catch dinosaurs to sell" or "we're making giant locusts to eat our competitors crops" thing. But that being said it's still weak compared to the material pulled from a best-selling novelist. Ironically, one of the best scenes in Rebirth was the T. Rex river scene, which they lifted from the books.

I have other thoughts, but I have to be awake in about 4 hours, so I should stop trying to make my brain function and just sleep.

Yeah, I think I'd stick with that ranking.

It's pretty on par with the first Jurassic World movie in terms of how much I enjoyed it as a reboot, but at the end of the day Rebirth leans into the 'mutant monster' more than it does 'dinosaur'. I think that's confirmed by Gareth Edwards saying he thinks people are bored of dinosaurs in some interview. So me being a dino nerd, I gotta put the one with more actual dinosaurs at a higher rank.

It could really come down to whether I like Scarlett Johansson or Bryce Dallas Howard more...

It does, set at some point after Dominion.

Basically almost all of the wild dinosaurs that were released during the Jurassic World movies are dead/dying because they aren't adapted to the climate, disease, etc. Dinos only thrive around the equator. Also people are bored of them now.

But one of the gigantic creatures they need to get DNA samples from is explicitly the Mosasaur from the Jurassic World park. They mention how InGen tagged it with a GPS tracker before it got loose.

Trying to think what I had to spoiler is another issue I had (with movies now in general), that they put basically all the movie into teaser trailers ahead of release... Like, there aren't many story beats that I didn't already expect from having watched the Super Bowl spot, etc... They just show all their shit right up front and don't leave anything as a surprise.

If they'd kept the D. Rex and shit a secret, I'd have been far more wowed by this.

Claire had the "business woman turned badass" thing going. Zora has "woman is already badass".

But honestly them not over sexualizing Scarlett in this just to net horny nerds isn't a bad thing.

Also, literally the entire plot of the movie is caused by some idiot dropping a Snickers wrapper in a lab. It's kinda a nod to the books too, but... Doesn't work the same way.

This sounds positive, and is probably the ranking I was hoping for. I've just bought an unlimited pass for my local cinema, so I'll be seeing this next week.

Right, I saw it. And I enjoyed it. It was better than the last two. But there was basically nothing even remotely original in it, and it was entirely predictable, almost to the point of not just who dies (that's very predictable), but the order they are going to die in. Very much a by the numbers Jurassic Park film. Which means some nice action sequences, some tension (though it's not nearly as scary or tense as the first one), some throwbacks, but nothing that even attempts to break new ground. Fun summer blockbuster and not even a hint of anything more.

Just to bring some spoilers in, but

I thought the boat sequence at the start with the Mosasaurus and the T-Rex sequence were both the best executed and most tense scenes.

And yes, @Ben, literally the first thing I said to the guys I saw it with was

I think I put Jurassic Park World ahead of this because that did at least break some new ground with the functioning park, and I thought the new gimmick of Chris Pratt with the raptors actually worked. The opening sequence was also absolutely fantastic. But this is in that tier, if just slightly below. I will carry on watching these films, but I do think they need to break some new ground for the next one. They've said that the dinosaurs can't handle our climate, but surely they can just bring in some global warming or something and say that suddenly they can and they're overrunning a city or something? Just something new that is also vaguely competently done.

I don't think anyone knew what to do with dinosaurs on the mainland outside of a chaotic accident.

They want to isolate the scope of the setting and isolate the humans involved to make you scared for them.

When you're not relating to someone feeling stuck somewhere, like Dominion where they just jump on a motorbike or a plane and it's far more action, there just aren't any stakes.

There wasn't really anywhere to go from the end of this movie. Like, maybe them open sourcing the DNA goes wrong and people make more giant monsters, but then is it really dinosaurs? That's Godzilla.

I do completely agree that there isn't an obvious place to go to. But then, I don't think that has really held this franchise back in the past. You can really come up with any nonsense to justify another quest or perilous circumstance.
