How 'bout that weather?

Old person conversation filler, go.

Anyone else have to deal with that bastard of an ice storm this weekend? Somehow, I managed to keep power throughout, but thousands of others around me lost it. Traffic lights were out at most of the intersections heading away from me. The grocery store was running on backup power I am guessing, and had most of the cold shelves covered up, with staff unstocking a lot of stuff like deli meat. They had a couple of registers running with just the scanner and POS system online. Kinda neat to see how they kept open despite being disconnected (I'm sure @VashTheStampede has info around grocery disaster planning!)

So many trees came down. I could hear cracking all Saturday as huge limbs came down. I had a tree outside my bedroom window bow down and punch through the screen, which I had to pop out and hacksaw the limbs back today. Of course, a few hours later, that entire limb fell off of the tree...

It's pretty wild.

IMG20240324110331.jpg

The tree across the parking lot was sitting on my other car's hood until someone came along with a chainsaw this morning.

IMG20240324025139.jpgIMG20240324025146.jpg

I of course was sent out during the middle of it to retrieve dinner from a diner. Stuck my phone on the dash mount while driving back.

Around 0:16 I passed The ArmyTM for some reason? Dunno if that was just opportunistic training or they were out helping remove limbs. From trees, not people. Although... šŸ¤”

Well that certainly looks cold!

Don't worry, no massive image from Crystal of the temps here in AZ...I'll spoiler it instead :p

That's... Warmer. Though not that much warmer than what I had been getting.

Probably 50% of the days in March were over 50Ā°, including a really nice Wednesday/Tuesday. It just plummeted Friday-Sunday and dumped everything it had on us. The wind has been brutal, too.

Bipolar weather. Moments of bliss at 69, straight down to frigid hatred at 33. Interesting twists and turns up there, down here we're gearing up for a last moments of warm before the hot starts to pick up. Then I'll be crying about the heat.

We lucked out, we were just east of snow and just west of heavy downpours that hit the I-95 corridor. We got about an inch and a half of rain, but that was the extent of it.

I have seen NG deployed for snow/ice, though. I thought it was fairly common for those guys to get called on to aid with mobility and emergency transport. Most of those vehicles come with chains or donā€™t even need them, and provide plenty of power for maneuvering around that your typical response vehicle wouldnā€™t.

NG would make sense, but they had no vehicles with them. No chainsaws or other tools. Just 8 or so men with bags. They were near the entrance to a big patch of empty land, so I assumed field training.

Honestly chances aren't terrible that it was some search-rescue operation. My director helps with those searches up in Maine, and had some event on Friday that resolved, but without finding anyone alive.

It was rather sudden, considering it hadn't been that bad the few days prior. I'm sure it caught a lot of unhoused folks off guard, too, so I'd guess the chances of people going missing were high.

I didn't experience that ice storm, but there was one here during the winter. It sucked, it took so long for all the ice to melt! And yes, ice storms are great for turning trees into crazed murderers. I hate hearing all the cracking of trees covered in ice.

Sweden had interesting weather yesterday. Shining sun and pouring rain in intervals of like five minutes...
Oregon is often like that in the spring! It'll be warm and sunny, then dumping hail or rain, then back to sunny ten minutes later. Or you might drive into a tunnel with sunny blue skies above you then exit into a hail storm.

My cats still haven't figured out the sound of approaching rain and regularly get soaked in the spring then jump in my lap.

Speaking more of shitty weather, I left to work before 3pm today. Ground was completely clear. Temp well over 40. By the time it got to 10pm, rain that slowly turned into sleet and eventually snow. Not an awful lot of accumulation as bunch of it just melted, but it doubled my half an hour drive home. Stupid snow.

Nothing but rain for me yet. Says it's snowing but I don't see it.

I think we're supposed to get about 3 inches with ice, but I don't imagine it'll stick long.

Supposed to be 63Ā° on Monday.

Yeah, went to bed at 3am to only rain. Woke up to daycare being closed over not even an inch.

Frrrr.

Sounds like Maine got about a foot of snow though, with a lot of trees down. Definitely lots without power right now.

Rain.

I'm English as fuck and actually love the rain though, so I'm fully OK with this.

I am so, so angry right now.

I've lived in tornado alley for awhile. I cannot believe the number of videos coming out of people just standing, staring at the tornado, or driving towards it!!!

It is DRILLED into our heads about tornado procedures. We NEVER become complacent. I know there have always been storm chasers. But these are regular people, probably filming for social media.

And even worse!!! Traffic is now backed up in Omaha neighborhoods because of lookie lous! Literally just filming disaster porn. This is so gross!!

Omaha, your KC fam has your back!!

I watch the storm chasers on YouTube and the amount of people stopping to talk to them while they're trying to map out routes and stuff is annoying. I get they cant be all that rude but leave them alone lol,

Also today in Maryland is day one of upper 80s and I can not wait.

If the guy chasing the storm ainā€™t Reed Timmer, I ainā€™t watching it. Tornado chasing isnā€™t something for amateur hour.

You should give Brandon Copic a shot. He's a decent storm chaser who will go above and beyond to help people out if theres a need for it.

I will, I just mentioned him because heā€™s a professional. Those amateur dudes are a hazard for first responders, they donā€™t need to deal with someone deliberately putting themselves in the path when theyā€™ve already got their hands full.

Well technically they're all professional to a certain extent as they talk frequently with weather channels and such. Reed Timmer is only super professional because he had a tv show lol.

Not the amateurs recording ā€œfor the ā€˜gramā€ or TikTok or whatever the cool kids are doing that @Rachel was referring to, those are the ones I was referencing being hazards.
