Every summer, my balcony becomes a flight-zone for carpenter bees.

They're bloody huge and sound like a drone going past your head. My kids freak the hell out thinking they're going to get carried off into the sky or something.

I'm so apprehensive to get management involved to exterminate them, because BEES GOOD, but damn would I like to just go outside without having head-level fuzzy projectiles zipping about.

This has been a Ben bee rant.

Are they bees or digger wasps? Bees good, wasps bad

They're definitely Carpenter Bees. I wouldn't be telling my kids to chill the F out if they were wasps.

They're just so damn big it's still scary for them.

Apparently the males don't even have stingers, so they're just intimidating fucks. The females do, but they're more likely in the tunnel it made wherever, that the male is guarding.

There are ways to deter carpenter bees without killing them, but I don’t remember them

There's been some kind of giant bee buzzing me on my deck lately too. They're too fuzzy to be carpenter bees I think, but I agree it's very annoying.

Sometimes beekeepers will remove a bee hive for free because they want the bees, but that might not include carpenter bees. Perhaps it's worth looking into?

They don't make hives, Carpenter Bees are solitary for the most part. The female chews a tunnel into wood (probably my balcony framing) and I believe seals herself in after laying eggs, and the males hang around all territorial like.

I don't think ME calling anyone is going to help since they're buzzing around all the other townhouse balconies too. I ain't paying to rid an entire building of them, but I also don't want management to just send someone with insecticide.

There's probably something like citronella plants that'll make them want to go elsewhere... Guess I need to put a bunch of those out on the balcony.

Oh shit, the wind chime/speaker tip made me remember I have some ultrasonic repeller thing plugged up in my garage to try and keep pests out. I'll try moving that outside onto the balcony and see if it makes them leave.

Edit: or... I thought I did. It isn't plugged into the outlet it was, so now I have no idea where that went.

Either way, might be another option to try if I just get another one like that.

Edit 2: found it. Time to annoy the neighborhood dogs with chaotic ultrasound.
