Digging through old memories

Hey guys. Think I’ll go on a rant for old time’s sake.

You may remember me as the other Russian woman frequenting PIMI/CV. Or not. Tbh I have no idea how I may be remembered, if I am at all – it's difficult to gage how one may have been perceived by others online over a decade ago. I posted in this font. Ahh yess... 4400CC, never forget.

GW turned out to be lifechanging for me. I guess it did for many people, considering 20+ years later we’re still drawn together.

I joined in 2002. I was 12 but lied about my age, naturally. This was still pre-IRC, but people were using AIM and MSN messenger, I remember AIM chat rooms. Man that was fun. I was always looking for someone to chat with. Made a lot of good friends. Bit surprising, given how introverted I am now, including online.

My family were living in the US at that time, but in 2003 we had to move back to Belarus, where I’m originally from. It was a drastic and depressing shift. I wouldn’t say it was exactly poverty that we went back to, but life was definitely a struggle. Technology was behind what we were used to. Less comfort. Less living space. Lingering soviet mentality and customs in the people around us. It’s only recently I finally stopped having occasional nightmares about Belarusian school, god I hated it. More than anything, I wanted to leave Belarus, but it was impossible.

Meanwhile, I was obsessed with GW. The forums and my friends there were my main emotional outlet. Whatever drama was going on on GW seemed more real and important to me than my actual ‘real’ life, or at least I was happy to give it as much of my attention as I could, to avoid thinking about ‘real’ issues. Hey, better than self harm, right?

I remember the internet situation was so shit when we returned to Belarus, that we were still on 28.8k dialup. What’s more, it was exorbitantly expensive, with pricing changing depending on the time of day. I stayed up past 2 am to go online, because that is when the price dropped. The computer I used was an ancient laptop with a cracked lid.

I had a massive crush on one of my friends. He went through a stupid amount of names, I think one of his friends who was an admin (Mark?) would randomly change it – one of the ones that lasted longer than the others was Whore. Or Anti-Social Chocobo circa 2002. PIMI was his idea and creation. He’d take hiatuses from the forums and stopped being active probably around late 2000’s. Anyway, it was mutual. About 10 years after we met online as 12 yearolds, we met in person and eventually got married.

No, no saccharine happy ending to this epic love story, spanning across decades and continents – we divorced 5 years later. Nothing grim. We were just different people.

Fast forward to present day. I’m still in touch with some GW people via group chats / FB, although it mostly comes down to me lurking and dropping an occasional “congrats”. (Sorry about that). I live in Australia. I’m happy.

Great to have you here @Victoria, I remember you from GW though I don't think we really interacted much. I'm sorry to hear about the rough conditions in Belarus, but I'm glad you managed to get somewhere you feel happy and comfortable!

Meanwhile, welcome home :)

Glad to see you here, @Victoria. I caught on about what happened with y’all via the typical cues on social media… like relationship statuses changing on ol’ Toddy-Poo’s profile. I haven’t gotten to talk to him in a while, though. I’m glad you’re doing well, and happy that you’re at least away from Belarus. Seeing what’s going on in that region now, knowing you and Olga are still good and not off taking out commies is reassuring.

I remember you lived in Schaumburg before you had to move back. My grandparents lived not far from there. I was glad to see you made it out of Belarus, even though that was a struggle. I hope your family is doing well. I love seeing you so happy, enjoying life in Australia. Jumping out of airplanes or bungie jumping. Welcome back!

"Welcome home" indeed - GW did feel that way.

I've been out of Belarus for about 10 years now - didn't mean to make it sound like a lifelong struggle, it's just that it's there that I was most active on GW, and I immediately thought back to that time of my life. My family is still there, but there are far worse places to be right now.

And nah, haven't jumped out of any airplanes yet (although I have lost a bet with that being the condition, and will need to face that eventually 😬) I did jump off a bridge last year though.

Tom expressed the same about this feeling like home.

it's weird, kinda. it's not the anonymousness of reddit or other sites, you don't know everyone here, but chances are you know someone thst knows everyone.

it's a very "comfy" place to chat, especially with everyone as adults and WAY less drama.

I remember one specific post. I was like 13. “Yes I pee in the shower (you asked!)”. I’ll never stop laughing at that. 😂

Welcome back. I’ve often wondered if you and Olga were alive. I can’t remember my indigo hexdigits… but I still have an my EMS files and could easily find out.

I was scratching my noggin to figure out if we ever had any kind of interaction on GW, but I'm hard pressed to find anything. So maybe not. I did lurk a lot around everywhere that wasn't my small corner of GW so I do have some weird memories of reading things from others, including you.

One of my favorite people ♥️

I’m very glad you’re here. And thank you for being one of the few people who never said an unkind thing to me, even when I was being a twat.
That’s only because you knew you were being a twat and didn’t need her to point it out :badumtss

Even after all these years when someone mentions Belarus for any reason (it comes up a lot because my kids love geography) I always fix their pronunciation of it and tell them I knew someone from there.

When the war broke out with Russia and Ukraine even though Belarus is adjacent, my first thought was hoping you still didn't live there. Good to know you were long gone.

I lived in pure awe of how unreasonably witty you were online, Victoria. Looking back, I’m actually even more impressed - putting the flawless English aside, how could *any* kid that age have been so goddamn funny?

Although I’ll never forget about what you said about me having fat hands. NEVER!
Nooo, I've always been in pure awe of your sheer intelligence and ability to think and go way outside the box. To this day, I'll see you write about a topic you're interested in and I just think about how mundane my brain is. 😅

And oh no, what did I say?! 🙈 Shows how much random stuff can stick with us, I guess.

Welcome back, Victoria. You were always awesome in my book and I'm glad you got to move somewhere more fitting.

I have a strong memory of you sharing pictures from a vacation you took to some beautiful beach, because there was a thumb in the shot or something. I photoshopped it out and sent it back, but I don't know if I ever told you that I also put a velociraptor in the foliage behind you... I always hoped it was framed somewhere in your house and you'd just get confused as hell one day.

We’re (me, specifically) gonna need some kind of confirmation from @Victoria about this. If it’s hanging up in her house somewhere… that would be the greatest.

It might not have been a vacation actually, because I think I recall you went to work on cruise ships for a while so it could have just been a stop.

Can't believe it, but I found it!!! :woohoo Sorry to say, but unfortunately it did not hang on any walls. Serious omission by past me.

2011, I was working on a cruise ship.

There was also a photo of Buchanan someone edited to have me in a trenchcoat busting through a door behind him, but I haven't located that one if I've got it anywhere.
Yesssssssssss. That's it!
