some of my buds and i hatewatched this last night. boy did this suck! and it got a lot of attention for the fact that a 27-year-old was very unconvincingly attempting to play a high schooler, sure, and yeah, that was the most horrifying part of it. but my god. the musical this was adapted from at least appeared to have some level of self-awareness about how weirdly morbid and terrible the events of the story are (cliffnotes: one kid kills himself and due to a misunderstanding our dear evan hansen keeps lying to the kid's family about how he and him were friends (they weren't) and it just keeps escalating from there) but the dude who directed the movie adaption is the same guy who wrote/directed the perks of being a wallflower and i genuinely think he did not pick up on any of the self-awareness and just played it totally straight. here are some morals this movie suggests

  • only kill yourself if you can monetize it
  • it's okay to lie especially if you have anxiety but only if you feel really really bad about it
  • a rich family is inherently better than a single working mother
  • you don't need to know what you're raising money for as long as you're raising money
  • did i mention that money is important?
  • you should go off your medications and learn how to just deal with it because medication makes you less human
  • it's super cool to try to get with the sister of the kid who killed himself
  • white boys who stutter can do anything if they set their mind to it
  • it's so fucking cool to lie especially to a grieving family
