I only noticed this during the Wolf thread because it's so active, but if you're viewing the middle of a thread and someone posts, it gets added to the end of that page. It's super confusing because you have to check the time stamps to realize why there seems to be a bunch of posts missing (because new posts are quoting posts on a further page).

Can new posts made while viewing the thread only be shown if you're on the last page instead of whatever page you happen to be viewing?

Solution
For whatever it's worth, it's now back to just auto-loading comments at the bottom of whatever page you're on. At least on desktop.

Not sure if something rolled back, something was tinkered with, playing with the template broke it, yadda-yadda, but... yeah. :chuckle

@Crystal did a thing to that one thing and that thing happened.

I’ve noticed that as well, and it seems to be an issue that arises when multiple posts are made in between when you began your draft and when you submit. Sometimes, it’ll even duplicate a series of posts. If you save your draft and then refresh the page when it happens, it’ll correct it and make the update thread feature work again. If I had to guess, it’s a conflict with that websocket stuff… it’s calling the server to update at the very least the draft, thread, and notifications sections of the page and those requests collide periodically. Keep in mind, it doesn’t outright “fix” this problem, but if you don’t refresh it’ll continue happening consecutively as server calls are made… if you do, it’ll go away for a while until you encounter another instance where the queries are conflicting and the posts stack up or display weird again.

I could be totally wrong, but I’ve been trying to read up on the new stuff implemented in this particular software so I’m capable of doing more, and that’s the impression I’m getting… not unlike the old MySQL errors that we’d encounter when the wires got crossed on database queries.

I don't think so, it happens to me even when I haven't started a reply. Refreshing the page does fix it, but only until another person posts. It's not very noticable unless a lot of people are posting while you're reading. Try reading that Wolf thread to see what I mean.

Gotcha, I usually mass-reply in those kinda threads, so at the minimum I usually have the first quote I’m replying to in the field. I may be wrong about the remedy to it although it corrects similar issues on mobile for me, but I think that I’m *generally* on the right track as far as the origin of it being the websockets thing.

I’ll check out the wolf thread when I have a few more minutes though and see if I can catch what you’re talking about more specifically, though.

It is websockets. As good as it is for instant chatting in threads and instant alerts, the implementation is primitive, sadly, so issues like this and the alerts being auto-read are popping up. I wonder if it might just be easiest to remove all of the websockets add-ons and return to default XF operation there. I'll get in touch with the developer and see if there are fixes for these issues, with a little luck...

Is it possible to turn off showing new posts in just a single forum while you figure this out? Several other people commented in the Wolf thread yesterday how confusing it is to see posts pop up in the middle of the thread.
A fix was released for this yesterday, I'll get that installed ASAP and hopefully we won't have this issue anymore

I had that happening on my laptop, even. The desktop was fine though. So maybe something to do with the screen resolution, IDK, but... yeah, co-signed!

Uh... -ish, at best? Again, at least on desktop.

Have reached the "end" of the posts 3 times now, no "show more posts" message, hit reload... notifications + new posts have appeared. 😂

I dunno, I've noticed better behavior on my end so far.

It seems like the "show more posts" button takes a second to load though, and I sometimes get notifications grouped. So if I reload a page in the wolf game there might be more posts, but if I wait a bit longer then the "more post" button shows up.

Could it be the size of the thread affecting load times though?

Yeah, yesterday/last night was pretty workable. Some sort of relationship between the notification bell and the "Show posts?" message. Usually the bell would get the red circle, if you click on that it'll then display the banner under the bottom post. Sometimes the bell wouldn't update and the banner would just cache more.

Day 2 wasn't quite as frenzied as Day 1, so load is possibly part of it.

Hmm. Alright, I'll get in touch with the developer of these add-ons and see what we can figure out. There has to be a way to sort these issues.

For all we know, @Warp is probably right about it being load-related. That’s a lot of processes and requests to try to run at once when you’ve got as many as a dozen people at a time in one thread posting back to back. That’s why large and extremely active forums don’t utilize those kinda real-time functions… compare it to the double posting days of vB2.5 when the MySQL DB would choke and cough up duplicates if load was high.

True, very true, but hopefully we can find a way to either balance the load or reduce the queries to the point that there's a happy medium. It's not ideal that people have to deal with the issue in the most active parts of the forum.

Maybe? If so the people who were complaining about this most won't get the best use out of it. Wolf thread breaks the world.
If the main issue is you have to manually reload in very active threads, I can live with that. If people are posting like crazy then you already know there are more posts and you need to refresh.

Unfortunately, that looks like the only alternative right now besides outright disabling the real-time features globally. It’s one of the downsides of threads as large as the wolf ones, and one of the reasons I offered the wolf games a dedicated forum… so they could break down the discussions into shorter spans easily, whether it’s having a dedicated thread for wolves and townies or simply doing one day or one night threads at a time. For example, the dead thread doesn’t usually seem to have as much of a problem keeping up since it’s fewer people and only has the dead players actively posting in it.
