Super Mario RPG was my absolute favorite game as a kid, and it's still one of my favorite games today. I must've beaten it like 10-20 times over my life.

I still haven't picked up the remake. I usually don't care about having NSTC boxes, but for some reason I want to make sure I have a NA copy of SMRPG. I'll be picking it up in a couple of weeks -- my first purchase after I land in the US, no doubt

Anyway, by all accounts the remake is fantastic. It's such a faithful remake, but with enough new stuff that veterans can feel like they're experiencing it for the first time.

I'm not jazzed about Frogfucius being renamed "Frog Sage" (such a lame change), or the easier battle system trivializing much of the game, but the artwork and the new sound tracks are fantastic. Can't wait to get this game, and hoping it signals a sequel is on the way. By all accounts, the director of the original said he wants to make a SMRPG2, and for it to be his last game he ever makes.

Has anyone played the game? Veterans? Newcomers? Thoughts?

I have not and I have no plans to, I played the original, it's fine for a first jrpg, or if you have a strong nostalgia/liking for the game or more importantly the mario IP, but otherwise it doesnt have what I want in a jrpg, and thats strong characters and story.

That's a good way of putting it. I can't wait to boot it up and be like, "ahh, this is home." Looking forward to the new content too, but Croco and Axem Rangers were robbed of a rematch

I didn't know anyone actually cared to hear my internet argument

I'm not big into jRPGs, so I don't even know if my PoV stands for much -- I haven't even really played a FF game -- but I know that every jRPG I have ever played has an extremely and unnecessarily convoluted story that doesn't even really make sense.

My favorite is this 21 minute "simple" plot summary of Xenoblade 2:


Tales of, Xenoblade, Ni No Kuni, some of the story summaries for FF I've read -- they all try to make the story of "big bad want to destroy world" more complex or high-brow or something, but they just come off as extremely pretentious, padded, and nonsensical.

The characters in these games are all caricatures of people too. I can't take them seriously. They don't speak or act like normal people would. They're just dripping with cheese.

So, I'm not saying I play SMRPG for it's story, but that I appreciate it's story is only as complex as it needs to be (which is to say, not at all), and it's characters are fun and humorous instead of preachy moral beacons or other tropes.

The only serious jRPG I can think of whose story I actually like is Chrono Trigger.
