Nintendo Switch 2

Dude I was literally going to ask you if you saw this and messed around with it yet.

I gave up when he said to bring an Xbox in the mix lol. I'm hoping there will be an HDR system update that will at least tell us the values. I don't have HGIG on my 2023 FireTV Omni QLED TV, figures. Mario Kart seems like there is always haze or a sandstorm, I can't get the values where they need to be at the moment so I'm just dealing with it. It doesn't look terrible or anything, but I know it's not perfect and that bothers me
MaxTML for the 2022 model is around ~539 nits. Couldn't find the 2023 model number.

On his now deleted table guide (due apparently to some discrepancies in the figures) that would equate to around 31 or 32 flicks up in the first menu, and 6 on the second menu. I guess you could try it as a start, or failing that you'd probably have to wait for some more investigation since there seem to be some issues with those numbers.

I don't think the HDR/SDR brightness difference on your TV is enormous anyway, so another option would be to just turn it off for now. You'd lose a bit of punch but it should at least present the colours and brightness correctly.

Watching a YouTuber that doesn't play platformers glow about the new Donkey Kong game. He said it himself, this could be a major system seller.

Did mention the frame drops, though. Hopefully Nintendo can figure it out.

Comparisons to Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Banjo Kazooie, and Red Faction were made.

Hell, the bad guys are pretty much monkey versions of the evil mining corp in Red Faction.

Not much change, but with correct figures for the calibration thanks to Cyberpunk 2077.

For your display I'd probably start by trying something like 36 clicks on the first screen which is 450 nits MaxTML. The 2022 model has a 10% sustained brightness of 526 nits, which is what the MaxTML is based on (although helpfully it's not quite the same thing). I believe the 2023 model might be slightly brighter but I couldn't find numbers, and the tone mapping that causes this whole issue in the first place will kick in at some point before that anyway.

For the second screen a conservative start would be 12 clicks, going downwards if you increase the first setting. That said, the paperwhite value that this sets is more of a personal preference, and some people just prefer a higher setting. In truth with your display there probably won't be a massive difference in brightness compared to SDR since the 10% brightness is not that much higher.

Finally, lob a grenade at whoever invented HDR standards. Or perhaps one at LG who decided to launch their latest 2025 model OLED with a completely broken HDR10 implementation that they had to race to fix.
