I think it would be super cool if it was a rotating thing, letting fresh blood tackle the voice for every new game. As opposed to, say, just having a singular soundalike do it until they're also ready to retire. Of all of the big video games characters, Mario's probably the easiest to do this with since he doesn't usually speak and it shouldn't ever genuinely detract from the experience.

Charles is 67, so hopefully this is more just a retirement thing than a health thing. Also hopefully the Monkey's Paw doesn't curl here and we don't end up with Chris Pratt or something at any point, a la Kiefer Sutherland's Snake. 😂

Yeah, that’s what a friend was telling me… but I haven’t played a new Mario game myself since… shit… probably Mario Sunshine?

He’s definitely one of the most iconic voices in video game history, though. It reminds me of when they changed the voice for Tony the Tiger, or Alpha 5’s English dub for Power Rangers.

had the pleasure of meeting him at the last con i went to before the pandemmy hit! so insane to hear the mario (and other) voices coming from a real live human being. but it was SO easy to tell he loved his job. there were a lot of kids who seemed nervous meeting an unfamiliar man but when he turned on that mario voice their eyes just LIT up. it was so easy to tell that he treasured that ability very genuinely

right. i love MGS but, man, that new voice threw me right off. actually, i didn't like MGS5 at all. it wasn't......MGS for me. arghh. i love most things Kojima does (including Death Stranded - i LOVE it), but i feel he really fucked up the final MGS game.

pls don't f up mario's voice, nintendo

Not so much a VA and counter to the Chris Pratt point, but if Gilbert Gottfried were still with us he would've 100% been down to ruin our collective childhoods. 🤣

I'm surprised ProZD hasn't jumped on board (unless it's on Twitter, which is basically unusable without an account lol), but for more mainstream/longtime VAs... I can't really think of any I'd want to hear off-hand. Which means they should do it anyway, just to surprise/horrify us!
