What Countries have you visited and how were they?

I always like to see the places people have been. Where have you been? What were the best places? What places would you never go back to?

For me: Canada, US, Sweden, Germany, Mexico

I loved Sweden for the week we were there. Stayed on an island off the coast of Gothenberg and just existed, nothing flashy but it was nice.

I've not had any bad experiences abroad in my limited time.

Grand Cayman, Columbia, Panama, and Canada are the only non US controlled locations I have visited. Technically, I've been to South Korea, but I was 3 months old, that doesn't count. Also, we also stopped at Costa Rica, but I don't recall stepping foot on land and if I did, it was only the pier we were on.

Edit: I missed the second part of the question.

Panama is cheap as fuck. 4 star hotel for 2 star prices type cheap. Bosas del Toro is definitely a place worth visiting.

Went to Columbia twice. First time, you could walk around alone safely enough. Second time, not so much. Not really a good place to visit if you don't speak the language. They have Postobon, though.

Cayman Islands are nice, especially if you travel beyond where the cruise ships stop and hit up places where people who actually traveled there to go to the Cayman Islands are at.

As someone who has gotten much more into trying local restaurants instead of finding something I recognize, I would love to go back to Bocas and Grand Cayman. Not so much with Columbia considering the state that countey is in right now...

England -- born there, would go back.
Scotland -- Mother's from there, beautiful, rains a lot
Wales -- Meh. Can I buy a vowel?
Finland -- Gorgeous!
US -- Umm...I live here...

  • Mexico - family vacations, both Pacific and Atlantic ocean sides. Haven't been back in 15-20 years but it was nice.
  • Canada - I grew up in Michigan, so it was a frequent enough jaunt. Toronto several times. We'd also go annually to this resort hotel in Chatham, ON that got better every year. Arcade, water slide, shuffle board, putt putt, etc. I loved it because we went with my best friend's family.
  • Germany - for a month when I was 17. Would go back in a heartbeat.
  • Caribbean Cruise - it was fun, but my sister was old enough to drink while I was not. She met a boy and was a pain to room with. Also been almost 20 years.
  • USA - live here.

Here are all the U.S. states I've been to:

Let's see...
  • US - native
  • Greece - my dad emigrated from Greece to the US when he was 18. I've been there once, I'm not sure... 25, 26? years ago. I'm not sure how things are there now but it seemed pretty archaic at the time. At least in the places I was in, it seemed to be inappropriate for women to be walking around out and about without being chaperoned by a man. I'm very grateful to have grown up in the US and not in Greece. That said, it was still pretty interesting to see where I came from, meet Greek family, etc. Perhaps things are different there now.
  • Mexico - I think I've been there twice? Acapulco for a ridiculously fun trip that I luckily took a lot of pictures during or I'm not sure how much I would have remembered :chuckle.. Blanking on the other place, I think it was Isla Mujeres. For a business trip.
  • Japan - I studied abroad there for about a year. One of the best things I've ever done. Also started from Nagasaki (where I went to school) and traveled all the way to northern Japan over several months. @Disgustipated joined for part of it. I also visited Japan again a few years later to see friends and my host family.
  • Iceland - Went there with The Mittani for Eve Fanfest. It was a lovely place, and I would love to visit there again for fun vs a business trip with a bunch of Goons. It was nice to visit with "regulars" though who knew everywhere to go in Reykjavik.
  • Germany - One of my friends got a fully paid 2 week sabbatical for 4, and they invited me along to Germany (which was also their honeymoon). Which was awesome and super nice of them to take me. Unfortunately the person who planned the trip probably shouldn't have been in charge of planning a trip, so it ended up being pretty stressful and I feel like I missed a lot as a result. Hopefully I can go back there again to see it with fresh eyes.
  • Other? I feel like we briefly visited a neighboring country during the trip to Germany, but alas, my memory is blanking right now! Edit2: I think it maybe have been Vienna, Austria?
  • Edit: Oh yeah I went on a cruise once and did get off the boat for awhile... blanking on where that was too.. I think it may have been Jamaica? In other news, I expected a cruise to be dull (for old people I was told?) How very wrong I was. I loooooved cruising and had big plans to go on more cruises, unfortunately right before covid hit. The cruise line I had booked literally was closed down for the day before my cruise was to set sail. I'm happy I got my money back. Looking forward to having the opportunity again someday to go on more cruises.

I’m not very well traveled at all. A family road trip to Orlando right before my parents divorced is the furthest I’ve been… and I even spent time there in the Internet cafe on GW at the place we stayed.

I’ve been to FL, GA, SC, NC, WV, VA, DC, PA, DE, NJ, NY, and CT for recreation.

I’ve traveled to all of those states for work plus OH with the exception of CT, which I wasn’t licensed to operate out of anyways. Chances are… if you had a car repo’d in any of those states since 2013, it was either me, or a guy that I trained, or a guy I trained went on to train him. To quote the guy that trained me… “Putting America back on its feet, one person at a time.”

Been down to the US plenty. LA, Houston, Vegas, Chicago, Portland, San Diego, Seattle, New Orleans and a few road trips to some small towns in the Northwest. Might be missing some bigger cities.

Mexico a couple times. Puerto Vallarta both times.

Scotland for a work. Mainly around Dundee but took a weekend trip down to Edinburgh which was awesome.

Cook Islands for my honeymoon. Tiny bit of islands in the middle of the south Pacific but absolutely beautiful.

Obviously been all over Canada. Short of the territories, PEI and new Brunswick. A few years back my brother got married in Newfoundland and did a road trip all through the province which was awesome. In the process I visited the most eastern point of North America

Japan was literally the best. Though the only other country I've been to is Canada, and even then it was only Niagara so barely Canada lol. Still, I desperately want to go back to Japan. Have been studying on Duolingo for a year and a half so I won't be helpless without you! :D

  • US - born and raised in MA, visited probably half the states or so at this point
  • Canada
    • Lots of family in rural Ontario: meh; Toronto is fine as a city, Niagara is a tourist trap
    • Other side of the family has roots in Quebec: beautiful island just outside the city. Montreal is a great time
    • Alberta: Edmonton is flat and oil; Calgary is green and beautiful
  • Mexico
    • Beautiful country and delicious foods - see pictures in my vacations thread!
  • Brazil
    • Spent 2 weeks here for work. Enjoyed a soccer game in Sao Paolo, enjoyed way too much meat and not enough veggies
  • England
    • Work here again. Was stationed in London, which was a fun place to be (hung out with @Olga and @Bandicoot while there). Traveled all over though, was on a train somewhere every day for work
  • Scotland
    • Stayed the weekend in Edinburgh and got to experience some of the Festival
  • Wales
    • It rained
  • Ireland
    • Dublin - lots of fun here. Been twice to visit friends. Hung out with Frik at a bar one time
  • Italy
    • High School Trip for Latin class. Ruins were amazing, gellato was had. Latin turned out to not be useful
    • Rome was chaotic but cool - all the ruins are just literally there
  • Australia
    • Was here (Perth) for 3 months for work. Beautiful part of the country, though flying across it was looking down at basically death in the middle of the country. Would recommend the west coast - went skydiving while here
  • Japan
    • Again, work trip. Was here for just over 2 weeks in the most humid time of the year and man it was uncomfortable. But it was also amazing. I would love to get back here at some point...there's just so much to see, and I barely got out of Tokyo (though I was briefly in Fuji...but was unable to see the mountain because of how cloudy it was

Whaaaaaat that's amazing! Japanese is super hard (and also I'm super bad at language so that doesn't help). I definitely want to go back eventually when I'm not poor.

Yeah, it is really hard lol. Reading I especially struggle with. Listening isn't so bad though!
At the time I found reading easier (provided it was kanji I had actually learned). I find the backwards grammar very difficult to process in the moment somehow. Perhaps it has something to do with not thinking in words, so committing sounds to understanding is really hard or something? One of my friends who spoke very good Japanese told me she learned by watching tv with subtitles, but I have no idea how that's possible given what is shown in the subtitle is never what is currently being said due to the grammar being backwards. Perhaps if I had words in my head I could hold on to the sounds long enough to actually link the sounds to the subtitles or something and then actually learn? As it is I learn virtually nothing from watching subtitles unless it's like a 1-word exclamation. I dunno man :confused2

The backward grammar has surprisingly little effect on me. It was also something I always noticed when watching subbed anime, stuff like names would appear onscreen wildly off from when they would be heard in the audio. I would definitely say that always watching anime with subs has been beneficial to me. Being able to watch anime without subs is also a side goal of studying Japanese lol

Finland since I was born there.
USA since I moved and live here now.
Canada since it's pretty close to where I live and there's some things closeish by the border to do. And it's cheaper to travel by air through Canada than straight out of US.

Speaking of traveling, I'm heading back to see my folks for the second time in a bit over a decade after moving. Set to embark the second last week of July.

Interesting tip!
Role reversal for Japan Trip 2: Electric Boogaloo? Fair enough, I owe you one. :)
I do have things like a smart phone now which will help, maybe lol. Alternatively AI will be able to translate between all languages directly into our minds by then. Problem solved

USA - born and raised
Canada - Montreal, Vancouver
Costa Rica - amazing time, stayed near the arenal volcano. Had the most amazing time, but is was also my honeymoon
Greece (including Santori) - had an amazing time as well. Food was incredible
Also Dominican Republic and Aruba

U.S. - Born and raised.

2018
Guatemala
- First time out of the U.S. Spent a week there. Traveled with 30 peers to do service work in a small village in the mountains. The country is beautiful, and the people were so welcoming. Also, we got to sail on Lake Atitlan, a picturesque lake formed in the caldera of a volcano and surrounded by a couple other volcanoes. Went there again the following summer and will be again at the end of this month.

Canada - Only barely. Went to Glacier National Park in Montana with a few friends, and we ventured across the border one morning to do a hike on the Canadian side.

2022
England and France
- A buddy of mine from here in Kansas City met a woman from England while they were on a group trip in Thailand, and last July they got married in England and currently live there. I traveled with another KC friend to the UK to attend. The wedding was at a venue near Stoke-on-Trent. I got to spend a little time in London before the wedding and a couple days in Paris after the wedding. Sorry, @Bandicoot , I should I have told you I was coming to your neck of the woods. My bad.

London - We got to London Thursday morning and saw as much as we could (Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Parliament, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, etc.). Interestingly, we arrived on the day the prime minister resigned. While walking over the bridge near Parliament, some guy stopped us to ask questions. We didn't catch what he said at first, but when we asked him to repeat, he realized from our American accents we were most certainly not locals and basically said, "Nevermind," and moved on. I think he was a reporter trying to get people's reactions about what had just happened.

Friday we went to Wimbledon, and it was the day of the semifinal matches. We didn't see the main matches, since they were on the stadium court that cost extra to get into, and we only had grounds passes. So we went around to all the side courts and watched other divisions and age groups. One was a wheel chairs doubles match, which was fun. I don't follow tennis, but it was a cool experience.

I am by no means a connoisseur of fine cuisine, so I'm not the one to ask for food recs, but I will say I enjoyed everything I ate. Fish and chips were had. Side note: I saw a place called "Burger King" in Stoke-on-Trent, so I can tell you even the fast food joints play up the whole monarchy shtick.

Paris - After the wedding we took a train through the Chunnel down to Paris and got to spend a couple days there. Stayed downtown near Notre Dame. They still had it closed for repairs from the 2019 fire. Went up the Eiffel Tower and saw an amazing view of the entire city. Visited Sainte-Chapelle and Sacre Coeur Basilica, which were both beautiful. Went to the Arc de Triomphe and saw the most insane roundabout encircling it. I'm talking like 6-8 lanes with no lines or rules; it was a free-for-all. Oh, and I guess the Arc was cool too.

Spent four hours in the Louvre and only saw a fraction of the museum. It's huge and there's so much to see. Visiting the small room containing the Mona Lisa is kind of funny because you have to wait in line (it moves fast), and in the same room there are other paintings, including a gigantic, super-detailed work of art on the opposite wall. And yet the only one with a line is a small portrait.

Did a guided history tour through Paris and learned a lot. Our tour guide carried a little Argentinian flag for the group to follow so no one would get lost. He wasn't from Argentina; he said he just thought it looked cool. At least twice I heard people in passing say something like, "Let's get out of the way of these Argentinians."

Food was really good wherever we went, usually random cafes (which were literally everywhere) with little tables outside..

Overall it was a lot of fun getting to see London and Paris, if only briefly, and just be immersed in the history. Everyone we encountered was nice. Oh, and for the first time in my life someone asked me, "Do you speak English?" It was a lady from the UK in line behind us at a Paris subway station. I said I did, but now I realize I missed the opportunity to say the more humorous (and accurate), "Not well."

Really good read. I'm jealous that you've done these things. I've always thought doing tours were a waste of time and money but I feel like if you don't, you miss out on things alone.

The burger king line slayed me haha
I was fortunate to have the wedding event happening there because it was like a catalyst to get a trip like that in the works. It sometimes feels like a big gap between saying, "I would love to visit this place or do that thing" and actually deciding, "I am going to go to this place, at this time, and do these things."

We were planning a small Europe trip for 2021 and just as we were getting itineraries ready, COVID happened. My daughter were learning about London and Paris at the time and wanted to go so I was planning a London/Paris trip

Now they don't care so I guess that is off for now. I'd rather do Italy anyway.
I've heard great things about Italy. Hopefully you get the opportunity to make it happen in the not too distant future.

I have been to:

Canada
I live here (in Ontario), but have also been to Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and most recently, BC. A few of these were for work, but BC was for a music festival. Quebec was initially for determining if I wanted to go to University there (decided against it), and have since been back many times for concerts.

USA
-General vacations with the family growing up: Orlando, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and possibly a few other places
-Football games: Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo (the Chiefs won all 3 games!)
-Concerts: Atlanta, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Buffalo
-Briefly lived in for 2-3 months: Boston

Europe
I've been to Germany 3 times to attend Wacken Open Air (2012, 2015, and 2018). The first time we went through a few places in Germany beforehand, the second time we went to Amsterdam, and then the third time we went to Denmark. I'm hoping to go back to Europe next year for another festival, but I would pick a different one. We'll see if it's in the cards though.

In general, I'm not much of a traveler, so nowadays I only like to go places when I can go to a concert. Unfortunately, I have ended my relationship with the US so it's either Canada or Europe for me in the future.

Oh that's awful! Hopefully there's still a way to travel that's satisfying!

The one thing I'm jealous of Europeans (besides access to healthcare, education, general citizen rights, work/life balance, retirement planning, pubic transit) is the ability to cheaply fly to so many different countries/cultures/experiences.
Oh yes, us Europeans are all about the pubic transits.. :paranoid

Besides all that, what has the Romans done for us?!?

I don't think I could put it better than Tom did. I'm scared to think how much my current health issues would cost in the US. Here all I have to do is buy a pre paid prescription certificate for about £30 for 3 months and the rest is free 🤷‍♀️
I get 30 days annual leave, 8 public holidays plus Christmas closure and when I stop digging my heels in about the 50 hour weeks (which is absolutely not normal) I will go on a manager contract and get 35 days leave. My employer pays 23.8% of my gross salary into my pension and I pay 6.8%. I can top that up if I wish. But I will have to work until I'm 67. I recognise that I am in a privileged position compared to some of my good friends here.

Now that I'm trying to work out how to travel again within my limitations I can tell you the prices have gone up A LOT since covid which will clip my wings a bit.

Still live in NZ.

Been to different places in Australia, and some of the pacific islands.

Malaysia many times, yearly now including working from there if I stay for too long. My wife is from Malaysia, this is the main reason. When our kid is slightly older I'll visit a lot of the countries that surround here. Been to Singapore a few times too, and it'd be one of my favourite countries... to visit, anyway.

Been to Finland, Estonia, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, England. Best was Netherlands, worst was Belgium.

I've been to USA, but only for work, in San Diego and Austin.

The next new place I'll go to is Denver, then probably another American state that I don't know yet, but I think the next new country I'll end up going to will be Thailand.
