I hope you understand that we're going to be required to do some manual searching, right? I had to look through the entire library of Mega Man games to find that one Wonderswan game.
I thought manual searches were part of the game. That's how I found a few games -- pinpointed the era, the system, the genre, and tried to sus it out on Wikipedia.

But also, I wrote a review of this game on these forums before, so 🤷

I've been trying to avoid doing that. I feel like blindly guessing Custom Robo and The Darkness and getting them right to be more fun.

I was trying to figure out what well known game I can pluck a random image from without showing the UI, main character, or weapons. I was trying to find something for Half Life 2 or Super Mario World, but let's plays didn't give me the material I really wanted.

Luckily, the very beginning of Max Payne accomplishes all of that.

I heard the GBA version is actually pretty good, and quite different from the other versions.
It's played from an isometric angle, but it plays really well. Biggest issue is that you can find yourself getting shot at by enemies you can't see due to the camera angle. Kept the graphic novel style cuts cents, complete with the audio and it sounds pretty good.

I only played the first section, but based on the long plays on YT, the game is only an hour and a half long (assuming you don't die), which means a lot of content was cut (which I assume includes the awful dream sequences).

I've still never played any Max Payne game, but I should really get around to that.

fuck yeah, dude.

Unlike many games I talked about, I've completed all three Max Payne games. Multiple times for that matter.

Just be aware that they use an adaptive difficulty system and it can fuck you over at times, leading to you dying over and over until the difficulty drops. It's not an issue for like 90% of the games but there are some sections of the first two games where it just feels unfairly difficult and frustrating to play.

They're on Steam and should be pretty cheap. The first game might require some modding to get working right, but not much. Apparently, there's a mod that just replaces the adaptive difficulty system with a selective difficulty system. Wish I had known about that before.

I found the GAA overly verbose and dragged out. I think I did the first three quests. Felt like it was padded to stretch out the games. None of the characters were that great either at that point. Sholmes had to be one of the most annoying characters in the series (at least through the first 3 cases)

I'm waiting a couple years for the remakes of 1&2 to finally play these.

I can get what you mean about it being a bit too padded with text. At some times it can get a bit exhausting and you can become a bit burnt out. I think it's best played one case at a time, with short breaks in between.

Still, IMO it's much better than the earlier PW games. The deductions are more logical, your next steps are signposted better (compared to the PW games where you kinda just have to roam around from place to place tossing suspects and evidence at characters until the next part of the narrative unlocks).

Also,
Shlomes is a god amongst men and we should all be grateful to have basked in his (digital) presence.
This.

I know he's super popular, but he did nothing for me and was insufferable (again only played first 3 cases and all together didnt like any of the characters, they all felt lesser to the ones from the main series). I also dont like Edgeworth, so what do I know (he works fine as an antagonist, but his two games didnt enjoy playing as him)

I do know the early games have some issues with its logic and stuff, but they were far quicker. Less is more sometimes and I think that is better for a series like this

I found the 3 PW games more tedious and annoying than the GA games, but to each their own. I can understand why someone might like the PW games more, but IMO, for each entry in that trilogy, the first case was the best, and then the deductions, and next steps in the investigative process just become more random and tedious. In GA I rarely felt like I was left to figure out what to do next by sheer chance alone.

I p much game console-only nowadays, but I imagine Max Payne 1 and 2 on consoles would be a pain in the ass to play

I agree bits of GAA can be slow (were you not entertained by the window tax?) but I agree with Kelly's assessment that the cases are more fun to play and more logical.

Shlomes does have a pay-off too.

I have heard both those things, also heard really gets good in the second half/second game but yeah not waiting for that.

By the lack of guessing other than Vash, gonna guess my second game was also too obscure, it was Ex-Mutants on the genesis. wasnt great, just remember it was a gift for me one birthday from an uncle.

This one should be much more manageable
